  1. He's already lost some of my respect. If he were a "good guy" and a team player he'd be at camp. It's that simple. Oh sure you can blame his agent or bring up all the other RFAs but that is all irrelevant in my opinion. Brock makes the decisions and he's making a bad one in my honest opinion. I have empathy for his family situation (I wish his father well) but that doesn't mean that he should be extra-aggressive with his negotiating. Brock, not his agent, can end this whenever he wants. As much as I want him on our team, no player is more important than the team and it's low class to hold the team hostage. If he holds out any longer I say sit him out a few games even after he signs. We've got lots of capable wingers this year. Go Canucks Go!
  2. That's what one has to do in order to win. It's easy to leave lots of cap room if one isn't trying to spend to the max or push for a Stanley Cup win. But if one wants to win one has to take it to the limit, ooh ooh, take it to the limit, aah aaaah, take it to the limit, one more time... ...take it to the limit, eee-eee-eee, take it to the limit, why don't we, take it to the limit, one more time... Go Canucks Go!
  3. Nice! I like this guy. He has a certain "Je ne sais quoi" about him. Well OK I do know what it is, it's his feistiness without being bitter and unpleasant. It's his "never say die" attitude. He puts in a big effort every shift with a big smile on his face. He brings a certain kind of positive gritty attitude with him that is contagious. He gives off the impression that he would do anything to support a teammate. We can never have enough guys like that; that's what wins championships (and thanks to Jim it seems like we have a bushel of them already). I can hardly wait until the season starts and even though it looks like it will start without Roussel, he will be a welcome addition when he's ready. Go Canucks Go!
  4. Yep. I like Brock as a player and as a person, but nobody is more important than the team. Yes, the greedy agents are often a problem but ultimately it is the player who chooses. "Leaving it all to the agent" doesn't impress me much, the player makes the decisions. If Brock doesn't sign before camp, I agree sit him out. I don't care what other players on other teams are doing, it just isn't right for an RFA to hold the team hostage. There has to be some fallout if he CHOOSES to miss camp while holding out for more money. Go Canucks Go!
  5. I'd go for that, but I doubt the other teams involved would. Go Canucks Go!
  6. Well that was kind of my point, namely that freedoms are never absolute. We Canadians perhaps think a little more deeply about what constitutes "impinging on others' lives or freedoms". As a Canadian, and an outspoken person in general, I don't feel at all limited in my freedom to speak my mind. I can and do. Go Canucks Go!
  7. Freedom of expression includes freedom speech (i.e. it's a larger category not a smaller one). However, even in the US, and anywhere, freedom is never 100%. For example it is illegal to make a credible death threat even in places that exercise free speech. Freedom is always necessarily somewhat limited by having to allow others, theirs. Go Canucks Go!
  8. Good insight. I also love his body position. He's demonstrating great flexibility and strength. Also thanks to Stierlitz for the updates. This kid is going to be a beast. I'm so looking forward to seeing him in a Canucks jersey. Thanks for the pick Jim. Go Canucks Go! P.S. - I'm not too worried about the heartbeat thing. Conditioning can be worked on and with an NHL training staff they can keep an eye on that. Attitude is much harder to work on or teach and this kid seems to have it in abundance. I'd much rather have a slightly less fit guy with a never-say-die attitude than a top-of-range guy who floats around and is disinterested (even Podkolzin himself mentioned that the guy who did the best in the draft fitness testing wasn't even drafted in the higher rounds and maybe not even drafted at all).
  9. I like your optimism and I think so too. And it's about time to get this thread back to talking about Ferland (i.e. thanks). Go Canucks Go!
  10. I totally agree. It's not really the plan to have Miller as our 3rd line center (he may end up there by circumstance but I doubt that's the plan right now). CDC has really turned on Sutter for some reason just because he's been injured a lot recently. In my opinion he's still a productive player (offensively and defensively, though admittedly he's stronger defensively) if and when healthy. That's the big if. If he's healthy I still want him as our 3rd line center. Give him a couple of good wingers and that's a good reliable third line for all situations. I wonder if he would mesh well with Virtanen? Go Canucks Go!
  11. Agreed, the better player should play regardless of outside drama but Leivo, to me at least, looked way more interested last year. Not to mention more productive. Yes, small sample size and good line mates, but I agree with the other poster's point that Loui will not only have to earn a spot, he will have to look better in an eye test than Leivo or anyone else in order to make the team. Personally I think it's awesome that there is genuine competition but that means that someone who is NHL calibre is not going to make the team. That's a good thing for the team and for the fans even if that particular player isn't going to like it. Go Canucks Go! (can't wait till puck drop)
  12. This. If he under-performs and is critical of the coach then that's clearly not a winning formula. If he keeps his yap shut, puts his head down and works hard to earn a spot then I'm willing to let bygones be bygones as each new year is a new chance to win the cup. And to win the cup, at the very least, we need all hands pulling on the same rope. It doesn't matter what each person is getting paid they all still have to pull with all their might. I'm willing to give Loui a restart but is he willing to do what it takes to climb the mountain again? With our current forward depth it looks like pretty much every player is going to have to work to earn their spot and it's not going to be easy. And I for one like that, does Loui? Go Canucks Go!
  13. Hot Tamales. That's what I associate with Rolla BC. The candy kind, not the Mexican food. When I was a pre-teen my parents bought a farm a few kilometers north of Rolla, the last one on that chunk of rolling northern farm land, apparently the northernmost grain farming area in the world, before it dropped off steeply into the Peace River valley. As a transplanted city kid it was hard to fathom being so isolated (and not being able to just go to the store to get candy when one wants). Once a week we would make the drive into Dawson creek to stock up on groceries and parts for the farm machinery. At that time, the late 70s, there was no pub in Rolla but there was a general store, a house or two, a broken down abandoned school, and a rodeo ground (which even hosted a stop on the pro rodeo circuit, quite a feat for a ghost town with a total population that could fit into a smart car). Anyway I was allowed to stop at the store and buy a package of Hot Tamales and I looked forward to that greatly. Nice to hear that there is a pub there now, that sounds even better. Go Canucks Go!
  14. I like the way he handles the team, but I particularly like the way he handles the press (and that's no easy thing in Vancouver or any Canadian market). Green is always in control. In control of his emotions, in control of the message and he doesn't put up with stupid questions. I like that. He uses humour and sarcasm when needed but he can be serious when needed too. Go Green Go!
  15. I respectfully disagree. I think that Sutter is a bona-fide NHLer. And not just a fringe NHLer, he can actually help our team. I'd like to keep him on the team and see what he can do. He's not that old and when healthy he is a useful player. He's had some really bad luck with injuries but I still think he has some good hockey in him. I also think that he's not a bad skater for his size, and while he is definitely better at the defensive side of the game (not that there is anything wrong with that) he even has flashes of offence from time to time. I want to see him play when he is healthy and I think that he can contribute to this team in a positive way as a 3rd line center if he can. Go Canucks Go!
  16. I think that Benning has drafted well and added quite a bit of backbone to the team through free agency signings. Bravo! We needed that. Can hardly wait 'till the season starts. I think that we will be competing for a playoff spot and from there anything can happen. At least it looks like we aren't going to be pushed around anymore. I think a lot of us are tired of that. Go Canucks Go!
  17. I don't even know what I'm going to have for breakfast tomorrow. GCG!
  18. Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, the refereeing does make a difference. If we ice a small skilled team, they swallow their whistles and we get manhandled. If we put out a larger more aggressive team, we seem to get all the penalties and end up short-handed all the time. But if I had the choice I would much rather go with the latter than the former. If we can just make the playoffs, that style of play is going to be much more effective. It looks like Benning has addressed that and I like it. He's doing a fine job, especially this off-season topping up the roster with several quality players. I can hardly wait for the season to begin. Go Canucks Go!
  19. Seems to be more about personal issues than personnel issues. Go Canucks Go!
  20. It's pretty simple to me. Leivo has a "show me" year, and if he plays well pay him and if he doesn't, don't. Go Canucks Go!
  21. Straight up maybe but not at the expense of Leivo or Goldy. I want to see some more play out of those guys before we cut them adrift. Leivo has shown some good hands and some smart play and Goldy is tantalizingly close to figuring out NHL hockey (though admittedly not quite there yet). Go Canucks Go!
  22. Like I said in another post, it never hurts to have 5 NHL quality centers (or even more). If one manages one's cap space and player egos correctly that is attainable and possibly even essential for a competitive team. Injuries happen, it doesn't hurt to plan for them (pardon the pun). Go Canucks Go!
  23. Well we could just get rid of all our useful unprotected players to prevent the other team from getting anything good. Would that make you feel better? Of course that would harm us more than the other team but at least they wouldn't be able to steal anything good from us. My point is that we need to face the fact that if we want to have a good team with depth at every position we are going to have to give up something that we don't want to in the expansion draft. That hurts but it isn't necessarily a bad thing overall, it just means that we're becoming a good team. The expansion draft sucks but we just have to suck it up and live with it. And yes we need to "manage assets" but if we do it from a position of fear we end up harming ourselves more than anyone else. Go Canucks Go!
  24. That would be awesome but I suppose I would still rather have Horvat. I think that Petterson has his head screwed on right and is an intelligent young man as well as a good player but Horvat please. Go Canucks Go!
