Unfortunately that in itself makes it less desirable (at least in my humble opinion). There are so many beautiful places to live in BC that we don't all need to crowd into the same already overcrowded place. I grew up in Lynn Valley in North Vancouver and it is indeed an awesome place to live or grow up but I can't afford to live there now. Nor do I want to spend all my time hustling money so that I could. I have 5 acres of beautiful forest in northern BC and I love it. But if everyone wants to crowd into Vancouver until it bursts then that's up to them but I'm glad I went north. Go Canucks Go!

Yep. Sprinkling one or two tough guys in a line-up to police an otherwise soft team isn't the way to go. We have to build a culture of team toughness such that even our skill guys are willing to throw hits and stick up for each other. Of course there has to be some actually tough guys to back that up as well. That's still what it takes to win in this league despite less fighting and chippy play overall. Go Canucks Go!

It's not a "predicament" to have 5 NHL quality centers. Of course Gaudette wants more ice time and that's fine, we want all our players to want to play, but he'll get his chance to play (even if it is in the AHL for a little while). If we want to be a good team we need organizational depth and that means having to juggle a few extra players and contracts. I like it that we have an excess of forwards, it creates a competitive atmosphere (you have to earn your spot) and it also means that there are good call up options if and when someone goes down to injury. It happens. Go Canucks Go!

Of course I cringed every time I saw Ferland knocking our guys over but the thing is that I don't hate Ferland for doing it then or now, he was just doing his job. I hate the NHL for not applying the rules fairly (he was clearly getting away with boarding time and again). Even though the NHL never admits it, it is pretty clear to anyone who watches the game that it is refereed quite differently in the playoffs (and that affects many things). I really like the fact that Benning is injecting some backbone into the line-up but it still comes down to how the referees make the calls. If we ice a small skilled team the refs swallow their whistles and we get pushed around physically, if we ice a big physical team and stick up for ourselves we get all the penalties, or so it seems sometimes. I have to admit that I'm not 100% unbiased but it sure seems as if we get screwed either way; but having said that I'd much prefer sticking up for ourselves and getting penalized for it than watching our team get steamrolled all the time and continually hoping that the refs make a call that never comes. To perpetuate the false narrative (of course). The media invents stuff in order to tantalize and stir up controversy with the intent of selling advertising and certain sheeple just parrot the stuff in order to sound like they are in the know. That accounts for much of the weird statements here on CDC. Go Canucks Go!

Thoughts on how Vancouver stacks up to division rivals
nux_win replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
I like the way Benning is putting this team together. I think we'll win more games than most "experts" will expect. We weren't that far off last year and we are almost certainly a better team this year. I think we'll be right there competing for a playoff spot and from there anything can happen. And even if we don't make it I'm so glad that it looks like we won't be pushed around game in game out as we have been the last half dozen seasons or so. Go Canucks Go!- 167 replies

Yep. Another happy fan here. I think I can speak for many of us when I say that I'm tired of seeing our team pushed around win or lose. What a nice blend of skill, size, speed, and even a little much needed toughness that we now have. Well done Jim, over to you Travis. Go Canucks Go!

It's a good thing this game is played on ice instead of on paper, otherwise we'd never win. The only thing that matters is if our players believe we can win. If Benning and Green can get our players to buy into that, they have a decent chance of actually doing it. Believing that one can win is a necessary first step to actually doing it. Go Canucks Go!

It's easy to be critical, but what's the solution? Rob, are you suggesting to close down the coal port? Or are you suggesting unlimited oil use? What are you suggesting? Even as an environmentalist myself I get annoyed by all the hypocrisy, but getting annoyed isn't enough. Personally I think that only people who don't drive cars have the right to protest oil pipelines. But it's not really about protest, we need to do something (well in fact we need to stop doing various things). Instead of pointing fingers at others we ALL need to figure out ways to pollute less. That's the bottom line. We need governments to regulate but we as individuals also need to be more responsible and introspective and all do our own part to pollute less whatever that might be instead of insisting that others do it. It's a simple thought but hard to achieve when everyone is pointing fingers at everyone else. It's not about all or none. We simply have to figure out how to pollute less. US. We Canadians are terrible polluters per capita. How are we going to be able to reduce our emissions as we have promised the world we are going to do, when we can't even stop increasing them? P.S. - There is certainly hypocrisy out there but that article didn't even make an attempt to be unbiased and didn't even bother to offer any solutions (it was all written on the assumption that the pipeline is necessary and that there are no other options available than to continue with the status quo, which is burning as much gas as we feel like).

No reason why we couldn't do both. I was in the no-way to Lucic camp before a couple of days ago when someone posted a line-up that included both Lucic and Ferland. I really like the idea of a line-up that has some bite. We've got Petey, he's got enough skill to carry the team, we just need to protect him because we know the NHL isn't going to. I think Benning's onto that though and I for one am glad to see he is addressing that side of things (without losing too much speed or skill).

I was in the no-way to Lucic camp, until I saw that line-up you posted. I like the looks of that! As another poster said, that would be a tough line-up to play against and that's exactly what we need more of. Well done sir.

[Signing] Canucks sign Tyler Graovac
nux_win replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Makes sense to me, every team needs a balance of skill and physicality. We have tons of skill with Petey, Brock and Hughes, now we need some muscle to look after them. I think Jim's doing a good job addressing that. We know the league isn't going to. -
[Signing] Oilers re-sign Jujhar Khaira

Or you could think of it another way, that Benning is managing his money so that he can have quality players (as much as possible) up and down the line-up. -
[Discussion] Aqualini and Benning Missing the mark
nux_win replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
As far as I'm concerned the point of any competitive sport is to try to win every game, to try to win as many games in a season as possible, to try to make the playoffs, and compete for a championship. Yes, teams have to "rebuild" or "retool" or whatever you want to label it, and sometimes that indeed takes some time and patience, but that still doesn't change the bottom line that you try to win as much as possible all the time with whatever pieces you have in place. Adding more quality players through all means available is what a team committed to winning does (even the best teams do that, perhaps especially the best teams) I think some people get so used to losing that they are afraid of winning, afraid of putting their egos on the line to support the effort needed to win, and forget that the attempt at winning must never cease. Benning and co. are trying to build a winning culture and I support that. As an athlete myself, I never ever ask myself "am I ready to compete?", that is a forgone conclusion. I am ALWAYS ready to compete. Even if I know I am likely to lose, I still compete 100% every time. And do you know what? I think that that alone increases my chances of winning (though of course practice and training are also important - but never underestimate the importance of the simple will to win). -
Really? I grew up half and half in Vancouver and on a farm north of Dawson Creek (we would go back and forth each season - the short intense growing season makes that possible). We farmed grain on 2 sections north of Rolla, the last two sections on the left (west side) before the road descends into the Peace River valley at Clayhurst (it was a ferry back in our day). We had a great view out over the river valley. Any of that ring a bell? I agree that Palmu looks more like a gym guy than a farm guy but who knows? I played rugby so I did my gym time as well, but pitching bales and general farm labour is excellent for fitness. I'm in my 50's now but I still prefer gardening with hand tools instead of gas powered machines, it's actually a very good way to stay fit, and more enjoyable too, at least for me. P.S. - Now that I've posted I may as well comment on Palmu's transgression. I've been a supporter of him (check out my posts on "the mighty midget" on the prospect rankings series of threads) but I have to say that I lost a bit of respect for him with this. I mean none of us are perfect and I've done stupid things myself aplenty but it was a big mistake (and apparently more than one). It's not fatal, it can be recovered from but it does reveal poor judgement. GCG!

It might be interesting to see how 4 scoring lines might work in the NHL these days (as long as each of the lines know how to play a bit of defence too, but we have a lot of those proverbial "two-way" players). The old formula of 2 scoring lines, one checking line and one physical line might be passé. And the Canucks might even be thinking along those lines, we at least have the personnel to do that if we want to. Might be an interesting, if not effective, experiment. GCG!

I agree that it is not unreasonable to expect a good bounce-back season. Not only for Loui but for the whole Canucks team. I can't believe that the tankers are back out in full voice on just about every thread saying that we should be gunning for next year's draft pick lottery when we should be trying to win with what we have now (but hey that's what I always think). GCG!

He deserves some criticism, I suppose, for having a less than stellar season, but I don't agree with your post otherwise. You can't blame Loui for the contract, that isn't his fault. He could be "blamed" I guess for not playing up to expectations but to say that he "will never even score 20 goals for us" is ridiculous. Nothing is guaranteed in life but he certainly has proven that he is capable of that. And I don't think that Loui is getting a "free pass" from CDC either. He has been one of the most criticized Canucks over the past year. He had a terrible offensive year, yes, but the people who bring up the fact that his defensive game is better than Vrbata are more or less correct. He at least did some back-checking when he wasn't scoring. He had a bad year. Yes. He's overpaid. Yes. But he's not washed up just yet. He may be overpaid but he still has some value. I don't know his personality all that well but if I was a pro athlete who was in his situation I would be burning inside to prove all the critics wrong. I think that he is going to have a big bounce-back season. At least I'm hoping so and I want to keep it positive. Maybe not enough to justify the salary but enough to help the team win some games. I can live with the salary overpayment as long as we can start winning some games. GCG!
-
It's not just you. I think that Loui should have been given more time with the Sedins too. I hope that Green does give it more of a go this coming season. I thought that was the main reason why Loui was brought in... GCG!

There are no guarantees, he may or may not be an effective NHL player but there is more than just his toughness that sticks out. 46 goals in 60 games in the OHL jumps off the page at me. If he can improve his skating he may end up being a really solid NHL player. We'll see, but he seems to have soft hands as well as the grit factor. Not a bad combination in my mind. I'd like to see him make the big team but it's great that we have so much competition for spots, no matter who makes it will have to earn it and we don't have to rush our prospects (and that is so much better than having to plug holes with whoever is available). GCG!
-
I like having too many players per position. That means that they have to compete hard to earn their job. And I have no doubt that Stecher will do just that and probably get one. And if someone beats him out then that person is going to have to work awfully hard (and that can't be a bad thing). GCG!

Again no disrespect to Burr but I agree that it is definitely time to move on. However, I think that people are enjoying the novelty of a never-ending thread (oops, I just added to it). GCG!

Yeah, 180 pounds at 5'7" is pretty solid. Size helps for equal skill but this guy seems to have the skill, and the attitude to go with it. I like the pick. We need someone who can put the puck in the net and this guy seems to be able to. Benning is doing just fine despite the usual negativity from CDC. GCG!
