  1. By the time we get everyone fed we're going to be dying from lack of clean air and water. Pollution, global warming, overpopulation, the obscenely unequal distribution of wealth, wars over money and religion, and starvation are all intimately connected. You can't solve one without addressing the others. It's not just about coughing up the money, it's about changing how we create and distribute wealth. And this in turn is dependent on how we respect the planet as not just our economic engine but as a place for living organisms to thrive. GCG!
  2. I don't like any of them. I'm still rooting for the Canucks. Maybe we could win a golf tournament or something. Go Canucks Go!
  3. OK, thanks I guess. I don't think it means much. Teams are always trying to improve and hockey broadcasts always need filler. I wouldn't take it too seriously. Trades can always happen but it's way too early to speculate with any accuracy. GCG!
  4. 2 minutes for being the Canucks with a lead... GCG!
  5. That's quite the name for a goaltender. I wonder how much parental "encouragement" there was to be a goalie. GCG!
  6. 1) add someone with size, strength, and aggressiveness. 2) add someone with size, strength, and aggressiveness. 3) add someone with size, strength, and aggressiveness. We've got the young small skilled guys covered, and that's actually the more difficult part, but we need more muscle to back them up. Because even if we get into the playoffs with our current team, we're going to get smoked when they inevitably throw out the rule book. GCG!
  7. It's a meaningless question and I couldn't possibly answer it. Why? Because there are way more variables in play than just that. GCG! You didn't even address the fact that we had a completely different winning record with essentially the same players. How do you explain that? It's not all about players and player salaries. Of course that's important but I go back to my original point, there are way more variables in play than just who is making what. Or in other words, you can't just take a formula, plug in the numbers and get to a winning team.
  8. I think that we should try to win now and later. The idea that it has to be one or the other seems rather artificial to me. We've just seen how big a difference that coaching can make with essentially the same players so the idea that "the window" is only open for a limited amount of time while certain players are certain ages is silly. There are so many factors at play that it can't be boiled down to a simple mechanical formula. Sometimes a 35 year old is over the hill and sometimes they can be a vital piece to winning it all, it can't be predicted by age alone. As long as we are constantly trying to improve we can win at any time, it's not about now or later. Go Canucks Go!
  9. He was always the enemy as I was a Boston fan back in the 70's, but I have to grudgingly admit that he was one of the best to ever lace them up. I'll never forget how he effortlessly cruised down the right wing with speed, hair flowing, and scored with a wrist shot past some of the best goalies in the world, time and time again. It was frustrating but it was also a thing of beauty. RIP M. Lafleur.
  10. It is VERY hard to improve much through trades. Mostly because the other team is also trying to improve. A trade can help if it is addressing a specific need but what is the "need" to trade Miller? I don't get it. A trade just for the sake of a trade can sometimes even help but it means that we have to get lucky and count on the fact that the other GM that we are trading with doesn't know what he's doing, and that doesn't seem like a very good bet very often. 11. One ref or two, my point is that I want the NHL to be more honest and consistent about refereeing. Y'know call a penalty when there's a penalty and not call one when there isn't. And not keep changing the definition of a penalty based on the player, the team, the time of the game, the score, and the playoffs. Other leagues can do it. In the NFL a penalty is the same in an exhibition game, a regular season game and a playoff game. Can the NHL really say that? I know that a lot goes on in a hockey game, it's played on ice and random stuff happens, and it's hard to referee, but it seems like they aren't even trying to be consistent and are more interested in trying to attract non hockey fans by pumping up the abstract notion of entertainment value my messing with the refereeing (the one thing that they can control while a game is going on - and billionaires like to be in control of their multi million dollar investments). GCG!
  12. The NHL wants us to think that it's a few "rogue" referees, but I think that it is a systemic issue and the NHL itself is to blame for the very strange state of refereeing in the NHL. In other words, I'm convinced that the NHL dishonestly and cynically uses refereeing to mess with the outcome of games. What else could "game management" possibly be? I strongly suspect that the NHL has shot itself in the foot by messing with the refereeing and they can neither admit it nor extract themselves from it. People who know the game KNOW that there is something very wrong with how NHL games are being refereed. However all the dollar signs make it hard for anyone in the know to comment. It's not just one or two refs and it's not just the Canucks who are getting screwed, I think it is a league-wide problem. And it needs to be outed and addressed. GCG!
  13. Not great goaltending, but a quick stick by Petey to take advantage. It doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down, it's how many times you get back up again that counts. GCG!
  14. Actually when the Sedins started they had rather pudgy faces. It wasn't until a few years into their career that they became fitness nuts and leaned out quite a bit. However, despite their size, they were still physically knocked off the puck or knocked down a lot for the first few years of their career. Much less so later in their careers. They figured something out. GCG!
  15. Every other team figures out a way to sign their stars. And some seem to collect a handful. We'll find a way. GCG!
