Good point. Another thing is that you acquire assets that may help you eventually make that trade for the RHD.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs | Mar. 05, 2022
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Great game by Demko! Good to see Motte get the empty netter. His line worked their tail off again. Pearson had the great stick to prevent Matthews from tying the game in the last minute or so. Besides the usual suspects (Miller, Petterson, Hughes) who had very good games, the heart and grit guys like Pearson, Podz, Bo and Chiasson were real solid. Other than coffing up the puck on the Leafs goal, Boeser had a good game too. The D played good too. A solid team effort. They’ve done well on this road trip. The boys deserve a few days off. -
Don’t we want to get younger (I.e. Forsberg is older than Boeser). However, Forsberg has a better 200 foot game and he is quicker. I like Brock though and he has been playing better in the last 15 games or so. If we trade Brock, it should be for a top 4 RHD.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
sockeye replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yes, but they (Petey and Brock) aren’t performing at that level and we will not make the playoffs (this team, as constructed, will not be able to play 0.700 hockey for the rest of the season - that’s reallity). -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
sockeye replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I totally agree. I love what Miller brings but I wish he was 2 or 3 years younger but he isn’t. We likely need to keep Bo. One thing both Miller and Bo have in common is that they are very durable (they don’t miss many games; they’re also good at face offs and good PKers). -

Green was only part of the problem. He got them through two playoff rounds in the bubble. The team, as constructed, isn’t good enough - regardless of who is coaching. With Boudreau at the start of the season, I think we could have made the playoffs but we wouldn’t get past the first round. We need to move some players and get younger and bigger. We need more draft picks and a good young RHD. I doubt we will be competitive for a.few years. We need to retool/rebuild. I see Demko and Hughes as the only untouchables. The alternative is to keep doing what Benning was doing and continue being mediocre to average. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
What about the Gustav Forsling trade which reduced our D prospects? He is doing well in Florida. Like you said, the McCann trade didn't work for us either. However, I was reviewing the Benning trade history and it was actually pretty good. I wasn't keen on the JT Miller trade at first but that turned out really good. Benning's biggest errors occurred on and after the July 1st free agency day (somebody should have hid his phone . -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

I love the what Garland brings (tenacity, speed, skill with a reasonable contract) and I'd hate to lose him but, like all the trade options, it depends on what it brings back. If it was just for a second rounder, I wouldn't be interested. If it was for a good young RHD prospect or a first rounder, it would grab my attention. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

Hoglander has not proven to be the next Garland, unfortunately. He just doesn't have what Garland brings every night. I see glimpses of it and then he coughs up the puck in the offensive zone or gets penalized. I do like Hoglander's speed though. Maybe he just needs to mature. He will need to become a penalty killer because I don't think he will develop into a top six winger. I guess we could just hope that he develops into a top six winger but that's wishful thinking imo. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
sockeye replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Miller has proven he is a good centre and much better than Petey. Petey needs to put on a few more pounds, improve his core strength (so he is harder to knock off the puck and stronger on the boards) and improve his faceoff percentage. I am confident that Petey will make those improvements but, until then, he should stay on the wing. I would love to keep JT and Bo, but if we have to trade one, I’d prefer to keep Bo who we groomed and who is a few years younger. If we trade JT or Bo, we need to get a good young centre back. We also need a top RHD prospect and I hope JR and PA can work some magic. The current Canucks have shown great strides but we would be lucky to reach the playoffs this year. -
[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Winnipeg Jets | Jan. 27, 2022
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
His current NHL salary is $800,00 according to spotrac. His contract expires June 2022. I expect that his agent will be receiving several competitive offers but I hope we can sign him as he would be a good backup option for Demko. I doubt very much, from his 3 NHL games against some of the best teams, he will sign for the league minimum (it would be great but I doubt it). -

Yep but he may be entitled to more than just the league minimum. -
Lundell would be a nice centre in return but where is the young top 4 RHD that we desperately need?

Yup, it would pretty well kill our chances of making the playoffs. There’s too many good (ie over 0.500) teams ahead of us. -

I think it’s both but, right now, I agree our offence needs to be better and especially our power play. -

Klingberg would be nice if we were a contender but we are not. Also, Klingberg will be 30 this summer. If we trade anybody it needs to be for someone under 25 given our core players. If we keep our core, I still don’t see this team as a strong playoff team for about 2 years (assuming our skill level and toughness improves). -
[Discussion] Kane, Evander @50% do we want him ?
sockeye replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I wouldn't want Kane at 20% of his salary let alone 50% and I would take JT Miller over Kane any day of the week. He (Kane) has proven to be a cancer in the dressing room and off the ice. Kane has a ton of work to do on his personal development. I wish the kid well but not on the Canucks. -
Pearson is a penalty killer (one of the main ones). The way he's played for the Canucks and how TG and BB have used him, he does have trade value (not huge but there is value there). He is also one of the more physical players on a team that lacks physical players.
-
The only reason we beat the Jets was because of the play of Demko. He is one Canucks player who is untouchable. Still waiting to see the Petey and Brock of their rookie years. I prefer Petey (more potential and more versatile - assuming he returns to form) over Brock. We need to trade Brock or Miller to get a top 4 RHD. I'm a fan of Miller but his age is a factor when looking at the core of this group.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Pittsburgh Penguins | Nov. 24, 2021
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
I’m OK for a coaching change but Petey is not a 19 year old rookie. Do the coaches need to hold his hand out there? The core group is not good enough. The only reason we were good in the bubble is because of Marky and Demko. Oddly, until this year, the Canucks were regularly giving up 40 plus shots every night. Anyway, this team isn’t close to a playoff team. -

sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
We can change the coach but this team, as constructed, has no chance of making the playoffs. Weak defensively, weak on the boards, lack of grit and slow. Blow it up. It’s well overdue. -
I agree to some extent but when the owner pays the salaries and the bills, it is rare that an owner would let a President operate totally autonomously. As in the movie Moneyball, the owner signs off on all trades and contracts (it's his money on the line).

[ PROPOSAL ] Trade Boeser + 2022 1st for top 2 D
sockeye replied to EP4EVA's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
We should've traded Brock a year or two ago when he was at the top of his game and his value was at its peak. This team is not going to make the playoffs so why would you want to give up a 2022 1st round pick? I like Brock as a person but he is a little bit weak defensively and on the boards. Also, his skating speed needs to improve. Unfortunately, we waited too long to trade him. I would be happy with a solid top 4 RHD straight up for Brock (or a top RHD prospect). Lets not give up any more picks (been there and done that and how has that worked for us?). -
Re: full re-build (finally, thankfully): Who stays: Horvat (good player, reasonable cap hit and great at faceoffs), Petterson (due to low trade value right now and high cap hit), Demko, Hughes, Hoglander, Garland, OEL (maybe), Podkholzin and maybe Myers. Who goes: I'm open to trading Boeser (too weak defensively and a poor skater but has a great shot), Miller and anybody else.
-
No. Never sell low. Keep Petterson. Some day, he will return to his old self and I don't want that to happen when he is on a different team. Only trade a player when their stock is high. Unfortunately, none of our players have high stock right now with the exception of Hoglander, Demko and Podkholzin (and these players are too young, low cost and too good to give up). I like what I've seen from Garland and OEL so I wouldn't mind it if we kept those two guys. OEL I could part with easier because of his high cap hit and long term (it might be hard to trade OEL for those reasons). For several years now, I wanted a rebuild not a retool. Might as well do it now - better late than never.
