Awesome job by the bottom 6. Congrats to Sutts and Juolevi. Nice to see that solid 60 minute game. Now, I hope we can replicate that effort. I expect a much tighter game on Wednesday but if we can have less giveaways and play like we did tonight (and also stay out of the penalty box), we should be OK. Go Canucks Go!

True, but why wouldn't the Kraken pick a player (preferably younger) who has a good contract and who is a good player; rather than pick a different player (say, Edler) only to let him walk. If they let the player walk, they may have helped a cap space issue (re the ceiling or the floor) but they have lost an asset for nothing (i.e. they can always trade an asset to gain something - picks, prospects, etc.).

I wish I was as optimistic as you. Unless we trade Jake or somebody in our top 6, I don't see a significant return that will make a difference. Also, we can't afford to trade a D man - obviously (i.e. the injuries). I don't think we'd get much for Edler given his age and injury history - he's got a NTC anyway but not a NMC. The Kraken might take Edler next year but they'd probably want younger D or forwards. We gave up too many assets in the off-season and I was peeved when we couldn't sign Toffoli - esp after what he signed for in Montreal (probably, due to ownership's financial concerns). He's a natural sniper. We should have signed Stecher too for the depth and that would've been a low cost contract. I liked the Holtby and Schmidt signings. I expect this year to be a step back, unfortunately. We'll be lucky if we make the playoffs.

[Proposal] Boeser +? for Dubois

If I was Calgary, I would trade one of Monahan or Gaudreau plus another asset for PLD - any day. -
[Proposal] Boeser +? for Dubois
sockeye replied to BadHammy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I really like Brock as a person and he's a very good player - he is just not fast or tough enough for what he's paid. I would do a PL Dubois for Brock trade straight up in a heart beat. I saw what he did for Columbus last year and especially in the playoffs, in spite of Tortorella's rants in his ears. The thing is, I think Columbus would want more than Brock for PLD - maybe Gaudette (or a high draft pick) because they would be losing a centre. Mind you, I would miss seeing Brock on our team. -
I am a long time Canucks fan but when I heard that JT Miller could miss the first 4 to 6 games, I was one of the 22% who voted against the Canucks making the playoffs this year (in the TSN poll a few days ago). Those few games don't sound like much but in this short season (with so many back to back games), if you have a few losses, your team can quickly find itself in a bind. I just feel that many Canucks fans are overestimating our team this year. Last year, thanks to unbelievable goaltending (in spite of the huge number of shots against - too many times), I think we overachieved but that was great. I like Hoglander and he is a very good addition but I don't feel that he is the going to be a game changer (that some here predict) this year (maybe next year) and we have lost a lot of depth compared to last year (Tanev, Toffoli, Leivo, Stecher - not to mention Markstrom of course). I would prefer to not have to play Hoglander on that top line this early in his career. \We really miss JT on the first line and, especially, on the powerplay. Somehow, we need to figure out who can take his spot and we need to get more pucks through to the goalie especially on the powerplay. Also, we cannot afford to take the number of penalties we're taking - we need more discipline and we need to stay out of the penalty box. I do think the team made the right decision in not signing Marky and Tanev to long term contracts given the young core of our team, but I think this is a year where we are going to take a step back unless Benning can pull off a magnificent trade. I agree with Brian Burke that Montreal is going to take first place in the Canadian Division and it will be hard to bet against Toronto and Calgary taking 2nd and 3rd place (respectively) in the Division. I don't think we have the firepower and depth to take that 4th spot in the Division. I just don't think we are good enough to be a Stanley Cup contender (our defence is so so and our bottom 6 is not strong enough) and, this year, we don't have the depth needed to be a contender. I also want Green re-signed as I think he is a very good coach and that is not where our problems lie. I just think we are short a few good players to be a contender. I hate to be a downer but, anyway, that's how I feel and I hope I'm wrong about my prediction for the Canucks this year. I'm still a loyal Canucks fan as always. Flame away, no pun intended

[PTO] Travis Hamonic with Canucks
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
From what I've read about Hamonic, he is a class act and will be a welcome addition on and off the ice. -
I have mixed feelings about Jake. He has a lot of tools (fast, good hands and he can hit) but I also agree with those that feel that he has been inconsistent and often lacking in effort. I'm not sure if he will turn the corner in Van. Sometimes, players need a trade (like Bert's trade to Van from the NY Islanders) to spark them. My biggest concerns with Jake are: 1) too many dumb penalties (especially in our zone), 2) a lack of awareness or hockey IQ (but he is improving), 3) not as strong on the boards in the defensive zone as he should be with his size and 4) inconsistent play. However, I'm a little ambivalent about whether we keep him or trade him. With his present body of work, at present, he hasn't earned a spot on the top 6 (and he has had lots of opportunities). I wouldn't trade him for less than a mid to high second round pick or a solid young prospect. If we keep him, I just hope he continues to improve and finds the spark that he will need if he wants to become a successful long term NHLer. Yes, Jake has improved but it has been a long painful process because we all want him to show more. I hope Jake can turn the corner (hopefully, it will be with us).

I don't know if Jake could skate well enough (especially backwards or walking the line) to be a defenceman. Brent Burns was unique as was Dustin Byfuglien who also played forward.

[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well, I'm doing a whole lot better now compared to a few hours ago. Nate isn't a RHD but he is definitely a top 2 D on our team. I'm back on the Benning bandwagon. Vegas did pretty good last year with only one of their top 6 as a RHD. We'll work it out and I really think Rafferty deserves a shot on the Canucks in a bottom 4 RHD role. -
We have been in big on UFAs and that has been our problem (ie Eriksson, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Ferland). This year, we couldn't if we wanted to be in big on UFAs. It's pretty simple - some big contracts coming up (Hughes, Petterson and Demko) and lack of cap space. As Ray Ferraro says, "Free Agency hasn't been our friend".

[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli

I hope you're right but, remember, you don't get something for nothing (as we found out with the OEL negotiations). You either take on more cap money or you give up picks/players. -

There's not that many good top 4 RHD UFAs left so I think we could lose Boeser or Virtanen in a trade (likely the former if we want a top 4 RHD). We could also lose Hoglander or Podz in a trade (I'm not in favour of this but I only think Podz would land a top 4 RHD). I don't think Pearson, given his age would land a top 4 RHD. Reality sucks. -

Without another top 4 RHD, we are going downhill - I'm not a betting man but I'd put money on it. So we need to trade assets to get a top 4 RHD or, sign one of the few remaining decent RHD UFAs. -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Tyler Toffoli
sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
His skating is at least as good or better than Boeser's. Toffoli has shown he is also harder along the boards and tougher to play against. Boeser's last two years have been only OK. I don't know if it's injuries or what but he is not the same player (and not as quick) as his first two years. I would've kept Toffoli and traded Boeser for a good young RHD (Toffoli would be cheaper too). -

We should have cut bait quicker on Markstrom and signed Toffoli before October 9th. We wasted time on Marky when we knew we couldn't give him a NMC and long term. It seems like poor negotiating skills there. -

Yeah, thanks. You're right. I edited my post. The first was for Miller and that was definitely worth it. It doesn't sting quite so much but, when you're not a contender (we're not that close yet - maybe in 2 years), I hate giving up assets. -

sockeye replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Oops, I made a mistake so I'll correct this. We gave up a 2nd round pick plus Madden for Toffoli - not a first round pick. Sorry folks. We lost the 1st round pick in the Miller trade - that was well worth it. I'm still pissed about the loss of assets though - for a team that isn't a contender for the cup. We should be building assets not removing them. This pisses me off. Toffoli should have been brought back. For crying out loud, we gave up a 2ndround pick for this guy (plus Madden). So we get nothing back and we could've easily matched the Canadiens' offer. Toffoli is a very good player and he wanted to stay. Darn it. I've been a Benning supporter but losing Toffoli plus the assets really hurts and I'm losing faith. I don't see a lot of UFAs left (other than Hoffman, Vatanen, Ceci, Granlund and Pietrangelo) that would really help us. In hindsight, we should not have signed Toffoli if we weren't going to bring him back - after all, we weren't a contender last year as our playoff against Vegas showed (without Marky and Demko we wouldn't have gotten that far). Also, I don't think the "playoff experience" gained equals the loss of assets we gave up for Toffoli. I would've preferred to keep the assets and not sign Toffoli. Anyway, that's my rant and now I hope we don't sign a 28 to 32 year old RHD for a ridiculous contract for long term. In hindsight, LInden's plan to rebuild rather than retool looks like the route we should've taken. Losing the assets and Toffoli is a significant step back for this team especially since we lost Marky, Tanev, Stetcher and Toffoli. Ray Ferraro's comment about the Canucks' "No plan plan" is echoing in my ears. I hope I'm wrong and I hope Rafferty and Chatfield can be an upgrade over Stetcher (who I liked). I'm losing faith in Benning and ownership.
