  1. When hockey resumes in the Fall (hopefully), there will likely be fewer fans in the arena due to fear of Covid-19 infection and economic constraints. This might be an excellent time to tweak the game in the NHL to bring some excitement and anticipation for the fans. Personally, I would like to see a little larger ice surface (i.e. a little bigger than the 85 feet by 200 feet ice surface we have now). I'm not promoting going to the full international sized ice surface of 100 feet by 200 feet. This season, Brian Burke supported this proposal on HNIC. Brian Burke was thinking of an ice surface that approximately split the difference between the international size and the current NHL size. Say 90 to 92.5 feet wide and 100 feet long. I think he said that the cost would be about $15 million per arena. It sounds like a lot but I think it would be worth it in the long run. You'd probably only need to take out one row of seats on one side of the rink. I like that the current NHL game is starting to favour skill over size (compared to the brutal late 1990s and early 2000s). I also like that hooking, interference, grabbing and tripping are being called more. Why not make the rink a little bigger to give the skill players a little more room but not to the point that the rink is so large that we have a game with no hits (like the full international ice surface). In the early years of the NHL (after the First World War), the average NHL player was about 5'9" and 173 pounds. Here is an interesting web page that shows player size increases over the years: https://hockey-graphs.com/2015/02/19/nhl-player-size-from-1917-18-to-2014-15-a-brief-look/ Now, the average NHL player is about 6'1" and 201 pounds. There is a lot less room now than when the game began (think of players like Chara, Myers and Tryamkin and their huge "wingspan :)". There were no players this size 60 or 70 years ago. I'd like to see a little more room on the ice so that the smaller skilled players can dazzle us more. Given this long break, the NHL will need to push the restart button for next season (whenever that begins). Maybe it's time for the league to reinvent itself while it's at it. The NHL will have more difficulty filling those arenas with season ticket holders given the economic downturn and fears of Covid-19 infection. I believe this is a good time to think about tweaking the game so the fans have something new to look forward to either next season or the season after. I look forward to your feedback.
  2. I often think of Seattle and Vancouver comparisons. I don't think Vancouver can compare with the industrial clout Seattle has. It has a seaport, mining, forestry and fishing like we do. But Seattle has a large US Navy airbase (Whidbey Island), Microsoft, Starbucks, Seattle's Best and Costco. Plus they have an NFL team and MLB team and they're soon to have an NBA and NHL team. What are the biggest companies based out of Vancouver: Telus, Jim Pattison Group and Teck Resources. These businesses don't compare to Seattle's biggest companies. Bottom line, Vancouver real estate is over priced for the industrial base it has.
  3. Happy Birthday Stech! I hope you are with the team next season.
  4. Not a fan of this proposal. Jake is progressing well and we need his size on an undersized team.
  5. Good picks. Also, Ozarks, all the Fargo seasons, True Detective, Better Call Saul, The Wire (oldy but a goody), Battlestar Gallactica (~2004) and older comedies like Frasier, The Office, Cheers, Seinfeld and King of Queens. I wish they would put on some old NHL hockey games from the 60s to 90s. I enjoy old CFL games too.
  6. Covid-19 is a pandemic (WHO has declared it a pandemic). If we don't take extreme measures this Covid-19 will easily surpass the deaths associated with annual Influenza. The mortality rate for Influenza A & B is about 0.1% whereas the mortality rate of Covid-19 is about (as far as we know now) 2% to 3%. That's 20 to 30 times higher than Influenza. Please inform yourself from reputable sources. 8. Thanks and I agree wholeheartedly. From management, to coaches to the players, I have not been disappointed in this season at all. At the start of the season, I would've been happy if we were playing meaningful games in March and we were. Now, if we can just hold on to Toffoli
  9. Thanks for the clarification. At least we would still have a first this year if we miss the playoffs. I guess if we miss the playoffs (which is quite likely, unfortunately), we would have a lottery pick and maybe move up if the stars align.
  10. We don't have 1st round or 2nd round pick in 2020. We would have to trade our 2021 1st round pick.
  11. OK, you've made some good points but one thing you're forgetting is that Minny could get their 1C if they traded for Brock. Why, because they would now be able to trade assets (not Brock) for that 1C. To quote you: "The Wild have wingers and some exciting ones coming at that." With Boeser in their line-up, they would be able to trade one or two of those exciting wingers to get that 1C.
  12. Interesting but I would bet that they would fall over themselves to land a local star like Brock. I bet the Minny fans would bring out the pitchforks if they didn't trade for Brock if it was known he was available. Even if we couldn't land Dumba which I bet we could, we could at least land a first round 2020 draft pick and a good young D prospect which wouldn't be a bad idea. What is said publicly by management isn't always the same as what is said privately.
  13. Why? I like Brock but this may be the best time to trade him while his value is high but when we also know this is a time when there are other concerns with Brock such as: successive serious injuries, goals have been less frequent in his last 20 games and his quickness/explosiveness has decreased since his back injury. Also, he has a very reasonable and attractive salary that kicks in next year. Other reasons to trade him to Minny: 1) they want him badly (young star and hometown boy) and may overpay to get him and 2) we will need cap space to pay Hughes, Toffoli and Petterson. Based on his NHL stats (games played and points), Toffoli is more durable than Brock. If we do trade Brock to Minny, I'd like to see Matt Dumba in a Canucks uniform. However, I would also be happy if we didn't trade Brock. I'm just giving reasons why a trade to Minny wouldn't be a crazy idea.
  14. Bo played awesome and great in the faceoff circle. He played like the Captain he is. Great Gordie Howe hat trick!
  15. Great team game and loved that we kept pace in the shots column. Kudos to Stecher and hope he remains a Canuck after Monday. Nice to see the Toffoli goals and I hope we can re-sign him. JT awesome as usual. Motte's tenacity was apparent. Good to see Loui score. Great team game all around and everybody played good.
  16. I might consider going after Taylor Hall but only if we can't sign Toffoli. With our contract situation next year (Hughes, Petterson and Boeser, etc.), I can't see how we could fit Taylor Hall's contract under the cap. It would be nice but he is a little older than our young core and I think it would be extremely unlikely that we could fit Hall's contract under the cap.
  17. I like this proposal by "bad alice french". Boeser gets to go home to Minny and we get a 25 year old very solid D man (Matt Dumba). We could even package up Troy Stecher to get a first or second round draft pick from Minny. I really like Troy and I think he is underestimated by CDC and Canucks fans but Minny will want a youngish D man coming back or a D prospect. I would prefer we send them Juolevi but I don't think that would get the deal done. Boeser's contract is very attractive. I'm a little concerned about Brock's play since his back injury. His skating hasn't been as quick from a dead stop (not as explosive).
  18. Tough game against one of the elite teams in the league. A good litmus test and it showed that we're not where we need to be yet. I hope we don't go all in at the trade deadline and give away draft picks - maybe next year or the year after but not this year. The Bruins won the puck battles especially on the boards. They were quicker on loose pucks. Our forwards need to do a better job of backchecking so they can help our D more. Also, too many give-aways. This habit of giving up 35-45 shots has got to stop - we won't be able to sustain win streaks if we keep doing that. Anyway, on to Minny and lets hope for a bounce back game. Go Canucks!
  19. Great game by the entire team! Demko was fantastic. JT was awesome and I love that trade.
  20. I would gladly do this trade over again. JT is a beast and well worth the draft picks. Love the way this guy plays.
  21. My prediction for opening night is: Ferland – Pettersson - Boeser Miller – Horvat - Leivo Pearson – Gaudette - Sutter Motte – Beagle - Virtanen Baertschi, Eriksson Sent down- MacEwen, Graovac Waived – Goldobin, Schaller IR- Rousell Edler - Myers Hughes - Tanev Benn - Stecher Biega IR - Fantenberg Sent down- Brisebois, Chatfield Goalies: Markstrom and Demko Waived- Bachman
  22. Something should've been done right after the hit on Boeser - not two days later (i.e. next game). For these types of hits, you need an immediate response.
  23. I would consider Dumba and a first round pick for Boeser. Maybe, we could throw in somebody else and get Zucker too. From what I saw of Dumba before his injury, he looks like a very good D man.
  24. I think that's crap. I'd talk to Gaunce, Tanner Kero, Reid Boucher and Biega and some of the older vets who were in Utica or who spent time there before I fire Cull. What did you expect him to do with all the call ups due to injuries? I think the Canucks need to look at every angle to prevent injuries including equipment changes.
