  1. Forget the terrible contract. Eriksson is a better player and can play PK, PP and anywhere in your lineup. Maybe Goldy could be given the Hutton treatment and come back stronger and better but that's a crap shoot. Goldy had more than enough opportunity. He doesn't battle. I don't think he has it in him so I would lean towards trading him for any pick you can get. He will be 24 in October. If the Canucks were generous enough to give him one more chance, I'd give him training camp and a couple of weeks and if there's no improvement cut bait.
  2. I was tracking the Comets from BC and it's too bad they may have fallen out of playoff contention (I hope not). They seem to have great fans and I bet the Aud would be a fun place to watch the Comets play. I hope that Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich improve and that Mike Dipietro comes in and plays well. Brisebois and Sautner should continue to improve for the Comets. Anyway, I'm thinking that Utica will have a better team next year. Hopefully, the injury bug doesn't bite us again.
  3. That's a big point increase over his previous years and it's great but our enthusiasm needs to be tempered with the fact he was a 20 year old in the OHL. But let's take a glass half full view.
  4. Can anybody tell me why Tim Schaller is more deserving of an NHL spot over Brendan Gaunce who is about 3.5 years younger? I think Gaunce has more upside and they both play almost identical roles. Both players aren't speedsters. I don't know why we signed Schaller. I mean Schaller is OK and kills penalties but he isn't better than Gaunce and he's a lot more expensive. Gaunce is playing good hockey in the AHL (33 pts in 42 games) and I think he deserves a chance to play more than just a couple of games. I thought his play was improving at the end of last season.
  5. I'd keep Granlund who is a Swiss Army knife player who battles and plays a complete 200 foot game. Most likely a bottom 6 player but can play top 6 if need be due to injuries. As for Gaunce, I've always liked that kid and I just think he's going to be a late bloomer who could play in the Canucks 3rd or 4th line (likely the latter). I'd take Gaunce over Schaller as I think Gaunce has more skill and he's almost 4 years younger. They play a similar role when on the Canucks. I'd trade Schaller and bring up Gaunce or let Gaunce finish the season in Utica and then bring him up next year. I'd like to give him another look on the Canucks.
  6. No controversy. Horvat is/will be Captain. Tough Canadian kid who has an all round 200 foot game. He's a born leader. Put the C on him.
  7. Ouch. That game sounds like a nightmare. Better to just turn the page. Ray Ferraro has often mentioned that he admires the Lightening's scouting staff and their picks. They have built a very good organization with strong depth. I hope we can move the Canucks organization in the same direction. I hope they have a bounce back game on the 29th and those Utica fans deserve better.
  8. Sign him. That little cannon ball is going to bring a lot of excitement to the Comets team. He has a low centre of gravity (obviously) and he is strong on his skates. It will be great to see he and Jonah Gadjovich reunited. Go Petrus!
  9. Jonah should play at least one year in Utica and they could use him. I like what I've seen so far. It looks like Utica could have a real decent team next year and hopefully go deeper in the playoffs.
  10. If Tryamkin does want to come back, I don't see why Gaudette would (or should) hand him the #88. If he wants to come back he better work his a** off. I wouldn't throw down the welcome mat for him just because he changes his mind. He needs to get in top shape and earn his spot.
  11. A tough break. I liked what I saw during his short stint with the Canucks and pre-season. I wish him all the best and a full recovery.

Thanks for the reply.  I assume you're commenting about my lengthy support of the Canucks (since 1970).  I also spent 10 years in Alberta and had to put up with my friends who were Flames fans.  1989 was especially painful (Flames won the cup). No point in changing allegiances now.  Now, I guess I just wear the pain as a badge of honour :) - not much else to do.  I hope I live long enough to see the Canucks hoist a cup.

How brutal was it at the time the Canucks missed out on a guy like Gilbert Perrault and ended up with Dale Talon. Were people pissed? I assume they would be pissed.

remember the whl and the pcl canucks? i go back to jean beliveau and the 6 team league.

i remember the donnie brooks the canucks and n.w. royals used to have. the quinn and kurtenback scrap. i would have liked to have seen that.

  13. Jake may not be putting up points at the WJC but I note that he is tied for second as far his plus minus stat. That's an important stat as it shows that things happen when he is on the ice.
  14. But to take abuse and score goals off tip ins and rebounds on a consistent basis is unique amongst all our players. Burr is playing great right now - offensively and defensively.
  15. I watched some Ritchie vids and he has good hands and uses his size well. I have a few concerns: he doesn't appear to have great speed and I'm concerned whether he will be able to drive to the net at will when he's playing against big NHL defenceman. But that's just an opinion based on a few videos.
  16. Good point. You can't deny that MG has managed to make major improvements to our prospect pool in a hurry. I like the character of the players he's signed and that shows good intuition. I don't see our team's future as dire.
  17. Like all GMs, Gillis has made mistakes. I was a strong supporter of Gillis but I'm not happy with the Luongo - Schneider situation. I think we could have got more if the timing had been better (moving Lu earlier, etc). While Lu was treated mediocre at times, I truly believe that he wanted to move back to Florida regardless of how the fans or the team felt. That's where his family lives and he liked the warm climate. I think he was ready to move there and finish his career. If anything, I think MG has been too loyal to some players. After the quick exit from the playoffs last year, I thought it would be a good idea to trade Edler while his worth was still high; and we needed some solid prospects to help us retool. I guess I was right. Instead, we signed Edler to another long term contract with another NTC. I was also not a fan of hiring Torts. While I like some of things Torts has done on the ice; the screaming and the off ice antics are old now. I wanted Lindy Ruff or Dave Tippet. Both coaches have a good resume coaching teams with very average rosters. I have a feeling that Francesco Aquilini had a major role in the hiring of Torts. I still think there were lots of positive moves by MG; such as acquiring Ehrhoff, Malhotra, Santorelli, Tanev, Hamhuis, Garrison, Stanton, Richardson, etc. One of the best moves this franchise made (and I attribute that to MG) is that they established a Canucks owned farm team at Utica. That was a great move and I am baffled as to why it took so long for us to have our own AHL team to mold our prospects.
  18. Gillis made another good trade. That's for all you Gillis haters We got what we could. The bottom line is Lu wanted to play in Florida to be close to his wife's family. Nobody here seems to get that. He wanted out of Vancouver. Lu signed the crazy contract which was the only way Gillis could have signed him 4 years ago because his asking price was so high. Lu made 10 million in his first year in that front loaded contract! Eddie Lack is a good goalie. We just need to get behind him. He certainly had no support tonight in Phoenix. Gillis got what he could given that he was painted into a corner by Lu's demands to be traded only to Florida. It was time for a change and a retool. It will be good to see some fresh faces in the rink. All the best to Lu in Florida. He served us well and was our best goalie to date. Time to turn the page.
  19. I am also happy. Well said. Sometimes, I get so frustrated with CDC. I'm proud to say I'm a 45 year fan (a lifer Canuck fan). I like this trade. Last year we couldn't get anything for Lu. Lu served the Canucks well for 8 seasons but he wanted to move and he wanted to go back to Florida. This is a good trade for a 34 year old goalie (all be it a high end goalie). We need players that want to be in Vancouver and we need to recharge this group. If the price is right, maybe we can trade Kes or Edler tomorrow and even Burr too if anybody would take him the way things are going for him. The Sedins contract looked good when they signed 3 months ago and everybody was raving about it but now it looks too rich. Unfortunately, we don't have a crystal ball. Who would have known the Sedins would tank this bad and it has been sad to see this unbelievable regression. I'm saying this yet I have really appreciated what Hank and Danny have done for this franchise. Well, the Sedins aren't the only players who haven't played up to their salary at times (i.e. Brad Richards, Scott Gomez, Wade Redden, Kovalchuk, etc. etc.) at some point in their career. Maybe next year for the Sedins.
  20. I agree. This was a good trade. Matthias can play and Markstrom has the potential to be a solid NHL goalie. Both are young. We're getting younger and and that's what we have to do.
  21. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Gillis has done a good job as GM. Much better than Nonis and I was no fan of Burke. Quinn was a decent GM. The only reason Nonis was able to get Lu was because he was forced to unload Bertuzzi given the famous "incident". Other than the Lu trade which was a no brainer, I wasn't impressed with any Nonis trades or pickups. Gillis has done much better and he has picked up guys that can actually play unlike Nonis (Santorelli, Stanton, Tanev, Hammer, Garrison, Malhotra, Richardson, etc). As far as the Lu trade, he did good (with Markstrom and Matthias). Lu wasn't going to fetch much with his salary and age. The only thing I regret is the 4 year Sedin contract. I wish it was 3 years as Gillis had bargained for. I'm hoping the Sedins can have a comeback year next year.
  22. I've been a big Burrows fan too but I'm losing my enthusiasm. Lately, he's had too many dumb penalties in the offensive zone late in the game. Also, at 4 million per year and no goals and only 4 points in 26 games - that just doesn't cut it for a top six forward. Everybody needs to be accountable. His salary has doubled and he is producing less. It's not good enough - and like I said, I was a big Burr fan too.
  23. I agree. Everybody who wants MG gone have no idea who should be brought in. If you look at MG's bio and his moves to improve the team, in my mind, he is exactly the GM we need. Everybody forgets about the Malhotra signing too. Manny would have ended his career here if it wasn't for that damn eye injury. MG has managed to keep the team competitive over the last few years.
  24. You're absolutely right. On that 4th goal, it was like Lu wasn't even there.
