  1. Holy $&!#...new levels of delusion here from Leafs fans/media...

    This Season’s Buyout Predictions

Some GMs have openly said they would consider buyouts or are expected to. The Oilers, the Flames and the Canucks are the obvious three teams that have albatross contracts they need off their teams.

As shown by last year’s list of bought out players, it’s often the last step before effective retirement for a player, but not every bought out player is at the end of their career.

Vancouver could clear a bit of space by buying out the last year of Loui Eriksson’s deal — he played seven games last year — but by burying him in the minors, he costs them $4.875 million, and a buyout of his remaining season costs $4 million this coming year and $1 million next season. The cash savings are only $1 million.

Meanwhile if they choose to remove the final year of Brock Boeser’s deal, they accomplish more. Boeser, at $5.875 AAV, has a salary this coming season of $7.5 million. His contract expires as an RFA with arbitration rights, guaranteeing him that inflated amount unless the Canucks simply refuse to issue a Qualifying Offer next offseason. They either need to find a trade partner who wants him, hope Seattle takes him, or they just have to let him play out the deal, knowing he’d need to agree to a lower salary to be a player they could keep.

A buyout saves them more than his full cap hit this season, in fact, due to the salary and AAV discrepancy, he has a negative cap hit (or a cap credit) of -$375,000 this coming season and only $1.25 million next year.

Choosing to just live with Eriksson’s cap hit, and buying out Boeser is a much better idea for the Canucks in terms of freeing up cap space, but it does lose them a useful position player. If the Canucks go that route, Boeser could rival Wennberg for the best UFA option to sign off a buyout.

Why would the Canucks buyout our leading scorer from last year?

When do they hand out the Cap Space Cup?

  2. Craig Button has LA picking Luke Hughes at 8th, and the Canucks picking Kent Johnson at 9th.

His list of NHL comparables for each pick is also very interesting.

Trevor Wong is another BC boy. 5'9, 155 lb. Undersized center, but is an offensive guy. Committed to University of Denver. Wins faceoffs consistently.

      Probably a 4th round pick.

If we're picking a forward, I take McTavish over Johnson any day. If  Mason McTavish, Dylan Guenther, Luke Hughes, William Eklund or Simon Edvinsson are available at #9, we've hit a homerun in the ilk of Quinn, Boeser, Pettersson and Hoglander.

I have a hard time believing Hughes is going to drop that far.

Could never learn to finish the final row and face, I learned to complete the top side and around 2 rows for each of the other faces but the bottom was quite the mess.

I still use the beginner's method. My best time with that method (years ago) was 24 seconds. With my best speed cube (which isn't super high end) I can average about 50 seconds

      Drive-By Body Pierce

      That's fast for beginner's method!

  5. If Nugent-Hopkins goes to free agency, I hope the Canucks make a strong pitch. I think it would be great for the Canucks to have him as a 3rd line center. Though, it will be tough to swing, cap-wise.

He’ll get way too much money and term for his worth in Free Agency. Big Nope

    4. Pears

      Pears

He’s not exactly the type of player I’d want as our 3C. As our 1st or 2nd line LW I’d think about it.

  6. Hopefully Demko's sentiments resonate with ownership and management...

Nothe season is officially over, is Clarke free to sign elsewhere?  Hopefully we get an announcement soon that Clarke (and Green too) is signed up for another few years.

Personally, I'd be offering a big chunk of my salary to Clarke under the table to stay if I was Demko.

  7. Can anyone explain why Seattle gets the 3rd spot in the draft lottery?

^ Yeah but it would have been fair to just give them the last pick in the first round that way they aren't screwing other teams over.

originally when the Vegas expansion process began they had 3rd overall odds for 3 years regardless of where they finished but they changed that sometime between then and awarding vegas the franchise

  8. Everyone knows Jim is great at drafting. Many believe he has made some questionable trades and free agent signings. Instead of all this fan polarization of "We love Benning" or "Fire Benning", why not just hire a complementary assistant GM equiped to deal with the areas where JB may fall short? Or is this too logical for an emotional fanbase?

@Pears Also much bigger than Rick Rypien, and we all know how that worked out. Three times, if I'm not mistaken.

One thing the NHL probably does get...a massive jump in viewership for the Rags/Caps game tonight.

Intentionally lowered DoPS reaction for extra attention across the continent.

  11. So Tryamkin signed a two year extension with his team in the KHL. So much for that return story.

I am guessing it had to come down to the Canucks play of late.

He's on a secret covert mission to bring back Kiril Koltsov.

  12. Suck it Team Tank! Planning to lose is for losers!

  13. D-day now scheduled for Sunday at 4pm.

  14. I, for one, am happy the game was postponed. I would hate to see any kid jepordize their career by coming back too quickly from serious illness. Unfortunately, I don't think the delay will be long enough.

    1. King Heffy

Couldn't agree more, although it terrifies me to think of how bad the guys must be doing in order to get a league that does not care about player safety to do the right thing.

He'll have to be, and at this rate we might need him to be Coach too!

      WIN DA MONTREAL

  19. I really see pulling the goaltender as fatal. Its Hari Kari! Winning or even tying the game seems more likely 5-on-5 or whatever scenario that keeps the goalie in the net. I think just the number of shorthanded goals against versus the (zero) number of goals scored with the goaltender pulled should be somewhat evident.

    1. Ghostsof1915

      Ghostsof1915

Didn't we tie a game with Calgary with the tender pulled?

I don't agree with it. I think it should be a 1:00 minute drill, and only for the last minute.

But our defensive play is sloppy so it's a very risky gamble.

  20. Caroline Cameron may in fact be the female version of Bieksa!

    2. Ghostsof1915

I'll do it. But he has to wear a mask, and handle his own suitcase.

    3. hammertime

      hammertime

Bieksa would be perfect for this team he was a turnover machine and king of ill timed pinches.

In all seriousness though once we lost Kes he was literally the only player on the team who could cross the blueline with possession. Dark days.

Would love to see him replace Baumer.

  22. Dear Canucks,

Please play a strong defensive game tonight.

    Sincerely,

    DrvByBodyPierce and the Canucks' fanbase.
