  4. Hiring: @Caboose has been hired as GM of the Nashville Predators
  5. Western Conference Story Lines Chicago Blackhawks - After losing Paul Kariya and Milan Hejduk, Patrick Kane became the primary triggerman of the team, passing the 50 goal mark this year. Minnesota Wild - Making a bold move trading game breaking talent Marion Gaborik, the Wild remain elite, led by big two-way center Jason Arnott. San Jose Sharks - No surprise seeing them here. A well constructed roster, keeping their core intact year after year. JVR looks promising, however Clowe had an off year. Vancouver Canucks - Cory Schneider is now in the conversation in being one of the best goalies in the league, and they picked up elite center man Henrik Zetterberg at the deadline. St.Louis Blues - After GM @canucklax leaving for no apparent reason, GM thejazz has taken this young roster and supplemented them with veterans to form a strong team, backed by Roberto Luongo. Columbus Blue Jackets - After losing Chris Pronger, Marek Zidlicky and Kris Russell have stepped up, as well as Cam Ward and Derick Brassard. Edmonton Oilers - After a huge splash in the offseason in acquiring Richards and Iginla, the Oilers also acquired Brian Elliott in the deadline, rounding out their team top to bottom. Anaheim Ducks - Hanging on for dear life, the defense is heavily relying on Scott Niedermayer. Offense is a huge issue as well. Los Angeles Kings - The youngest team in the league, may miss the playoffs this year, but have a lot to look forward to with an impressive young core led by Kopitar, Yandle and Quick. Colorado Avalanche - A surprisingly competitive team this year, faltered after the trade deadline, but the future is bright in Colorado. Dallas Stars - Losing Zubov hurt more then expected, the offense was simply not playing to their potential. Expect a big off-season from the Stars. Calgary Flames - Tino Boschmann, Milan Hejduk, Martin Havlat, Nathan Horton, Matt Duchene, Guy Hoppe. These guys put on a show for the Calgary Flames this year. They are just a goaltender and defense away from being competitive. Phoenix Coyotes - Played decent at first, Chris Pronger has fit in quite well with the roster. Simply need time for their young players to develop. Detroit Red Wings - No one is quite sure the direction the Red WIngs are going. It seems to be a combination of rebuilding and collecting ex Canuck players. Nonetheless, they will be getting a high draft pick this year. Nashville Predators - GM @Caboose left the team knowing this is likely the shape the end up in. An absolutely brutal season from all players on this team.
  6. Eastern Conference Story Lines Atlanta Thrashers - After winning the cup, there was no cup hangover for the champs. Top of the league again in standings, with a notable breakout year for Ilya Nikulin. Pittsburgh Penguins - Marc-Andre Fleury has played lights out all year, and a lethal penalty kill has made them a formidable force. Montreal Canadiens - Off-season acquisition Paul Martin and Shane Doan added must needed leadership and the breakout of Travis Zajac as a legitimate 2C. Florida Panthers - An outstanding season, despite the struggles of Kimmo Timonen. Carl Hagelin and Michael Frolik emerge as legit top line forwards. Carolina Hurricanes - After missing last season, the goaltending duo of Semyon Varlamov and Jimmy Howard have propelled the Hurricanes back into the playoff picture. New Jersey Devils - Expecting a decline from Brodeur, the Devils still remain competitive, with a notable breakout season from Tobias Enstrom on the backend. Philadelphia Flyers - After GM Nail, Joe Corvo and Pavol Demitra leaving last season, the Flyers were expected for a decline, but picking up Mark Giordano was a huge key addition to keep them in the playoff hunt. New York Islanders - Many new faces, too many to list. The Islanders are close to capturing a playoff spot and should only improve as John Tavares and Drew Doughty round out their game. Washington Capitals - After an incredible hot start, the team was unable to hold to fort defensively, and Michal Neuvirth ultimately collapsed. We shall see if they can sneak into the playoffs with 7 games remaining. Ottawa Senators - After being a fairly consistent playoff team, they missed last year and embraced the rebuild this year selling off Alfredsson, Redden, Wheeler and Elliott. Boston Bruins - Another team that was a consistent contender, appearing in the finals twice, have also embraced the rebuild. Silver lining is having one of the best top lines in the league in Higgins-Bergeron-Kessel. Buffalo Sabres - Once again, a consistent playoff team just kept losing depth year after year, and it finally caught up. Defenders Kevin Dallman and Mike van Ryn have not played as advertised, followed by a brutal shootout/OT record (2-13). New York Rangers - Not much talk or movement in New York, obviously embracing a rebuild with the call-ups to Kyle Beach & Patrick White, the main storyline is if Jagr retires? Toronto Maple Leafs - Still several years away from competing, but had a killer draft last year, and expect to do the same this year. They have some great young pieces on the roster to build on. Tampa Bay Lightning - A team going through a transitional phase. Wolski, Franson, Setoguchi, Ramo and Lisin look like keepers, expect for a huge overhaul and many new faces in the offseason.
