Luke Schenn named Bill Masterton Trophy nominee
Kevin Biestra replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Not a bad name. Every now and then somebody suggests a Rod Langway award for best defensive defenseman. I would have always liked to see something for the Brad Marsh, Curt Giles, Keith Brown, Ken Morrow type of defensemen. There are so many awards for the forwards...best defensive forward, the Hart almost always goes to a forward, the Maurice Richard always goes to a forward, the Art Ross will always go to a forward since Bobby Orr, the Pearson / Lindsay will almost always go to a forward, the Lady Byng pretty much always goes to a forward since defensemen can't be as gentlemanly. Meanwhile, two awards for goalies and one award for defensemen. I don't NEED another defenseman award but hell, get rid of the Messier paperweight and come up with something more meaningful...anything. I preferred the Emery Edge Award for highest +/-. Bernie Parent Trophy for most wins. Tim Kerr award for most power play goals. Glenn Hall award for most minutes by a goalie. -

Yeah kind of like our selections of Garth Butcher and Michel Petit in the 1st round back in the day, or Ken Daneyko for the Devils. Gerald Diduck, Jeff Beukeboom, Dana Murzyn, Luke Richardson. -

Yeah I think Quinn is tracking to be a hall of famer but there is already virtually no question about Makar. -

157 points in 200 games...vs. 179 points in 176 games. Makar is on pace for 203 or 204 points by game 200...almost 50 more points than Hughes and already has the 157 beat if he never plays his remaining 24 games. Hughes is great but Makar is winning this thing so far. -

Makar hasn't played his 200th game yet, but he already has way more points than 157. -

McLean had 38 one year. I think Auld hit 33 as well. -

He kind of reminds me of someone like Murzyn in 94 or Lee Fogolin in the early Oilers days...not Paul Coffey or Bobby Orr but a solid guy who has been there and provides some stability. Or Doug Lidster for both the Rangers and Stars Cup runs. Or Jamie Macoun on the Red Wings in the late 90s. -
Quinn Hughes watch...Coming after Lidster
Kevin Biestra replied to Kevin Biestra's topic in Canucks Talk
Still waiting on Randy Carlyle and Gary Suter. Only recently got Doug Wilson and Mark Howe after a long wait. Steve Duchesne is the only one that clearly won't ever get in, but at the same time he probably deserves a bit more acclaim than he gets (being totally forgotten). Won't hold my breath on Carlyle and Suter though. Bernie Nicholls still has the 16th best season ever (beaten only by four players) and isn't in. Even better for goals (12th). And in Mogilny's case, the 5th best season ever and he isn't in. Tim Kerr has two of the best 50 seasons ever for goals and isn't in either. -
Demko doesn't quite seem to be a reliable workhorse in the vein of McLean / Luongo / Fuhr / Joseph. He has absolutely dragged ass over the finish line at the end here. He is going to need a backup to play 25 good games...so I guess I am hoping to see Spencer Martin be that guy. I would actually play Spencer the next two games and then Demko the final one if I were running things. It is doing nobody any good to have Demko trudge onto the ice and play like exhausted poopy doo, and we may as well get Spencer some reps. I want to see Elias break 80 points. He should if he shows up to play from game one. I want to see Quinn get 70 but I'd rather see him get 80 as well. He has the talent, and now it's time to start catching up to Makar. Oh and fire Boudreau and bring back Green and Desjardins as co-head-coaches.

96 points with three games to go. One point to catch Bertuzzi...four points in three games to get 100. -
Quinn Hughes watch...Coming after Lidster
Kevin Biestra replied to Kevin Biestra's topic in Canucks Talk
Well, the record has been tied. Three games to go. I figure a year or two before Hughes joins the 80 point club which is pretty darn exclusive throughout NHL history for blueliners. I was glancing at the NHL records...unbelievable how dominant Orr and Coffey were with such a lead over #3. The nine best seasons of all time by a defenseman are all Orr and Coffey and nobody else (Coffey and MacInnis tied for the 10th best). Orr and Coffey had a total of nine seasons with more than 113 points (peaking at 138 and 139)...the best season ever by somebody not named Orr or Coffey is 103 points. The only other defensemen to ever get 100 points had 101, 102 and 103 points and only squeaked their way there once. Also shows what a beast of a season Josi has had this year with 89 and counting. I think only 8 defensemen ever have had more points than 89 in a season. And only 10 including Josi have had more than Makar's 85 this year. -
A young Bruce might be what the doctor ordered. He never really got a fair shake in the NHL but he was an absolute beast in the minors. Six 100 point seasons. The Canucks should have given him a try.

Another Legend Lost - Lafleur Passes Away at 70
Kevin Biestra replied to HKSR's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Bossy and Lafleur back to back. One of the worst months in hockey history. Lafleur, what a legend. His comeback in the late 80s / early 90s was awesome. How many players can simply lace it up again at will during what should be retirement age just because they didn't like the way things ended the first time. Everyone else gets forced out of the game. Lafleur came back just as Dionne was exiting the exact same way Lafleur did the first time. Once Perreault, Gillies, Bossy, Billy Smith were all already retired...most or all of whom started after Lafleur...and Guy was lacing them up again to go out the way he wanted...and fittingly as a Nordique. -
[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild | Apr. 21, 2022

Oh well, yet another end of the season winning streak to miss the playoffs and ruin our draft picks. At least this time it was before we were actually eliminated, so that's an improvement. Definitely more fun that way. -
So what do you want to do exactly? The problem to me was always Benning's free agent signings. He drafted a playoff core...traded some 1st rounders for quality players. But he kept filling up the cap with junk and then had to either sit and wait for years for it to clear up or else trade away the future to get out from under his own signings. If JR and Allvin draft all right and just don't make idiot free agent signings...looks reasonable to me going forward. There are obviously decisions to make with Brock and JT.

The Canucks after the Boudreau bump is exactly half a season and pro-rates to 98 points for a year. That's if you don't give them credit for the Boudreau bump. Either way it seems like this roster with a coach other than Green is a playoff team. With the Boudreau bump they are killers, without the Boudreau bump they are 3rd in the division or a wild card team. Doesn't mean the GMs shouldn't try to improve the team or build for the future or whatever the plan turns out to be...but they were clearly a coach away from performing pretty well as they were constructed.
