I think Marty McSorley was the best hockey player from that entire list. He was sometimes good for 15 goals, not 15 points. Led the league in +/- one year, was a beast in the 1993 playoffs.

Interesting question and tough to estimate. I guess the first step would be agreeing on the tiers... Obviously it would be... Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux Not sure how to separate out Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, Steve Yzerman, Peter Stastny, Dale Hawerchuk, Denis Savard, Bryan Trottier, Mark Messier... I left defensemen out but in terms of talent I would probably have Paul Coffey closer to Gretzky and Lemieux than the tier below.
-
I think Selanne was a tier above Sundin...he never quite reached that height again but his rookie season was one of the best seasons in NHL history, not just for a rookie but by any player. Sundin was great but I think of him as closer to Dave Andreychuk or Bernie Federko or Mark Recchi than Dale Hawerchuk or Denis Savard.

Still a top 3 all time series in Canucks history for me...the other two being the seven gamers in 1994. I guess then it's Chicago 2011 but it wouldn't be on the list if they had lost that one. Then probably that one where they came back from 3-1 to beat Winnipeg in the early 90s...poor Tabaracci.

I wouldn't blame the owner. I had similar shifts in sentiment while watching the team. Nobody expected them to be THAT good after the coaching change. It was appropriate to at least watch them for a while. They damn near played themselves into a playoff spot and it was worth seeing if they could keep it up. There was plenty of reason to think they might...they blew it over the last eight games or whatever but under Bruce they were trending to a playoff spot and I wasn't terribly inclined to pull the rug out from under them while they were doing it. -

Yeah, better actually. The Sedins were great no doubt but look at Edmonton... 1980: Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri...plus Andy Moog and Walt Poddubny (40 goal scorer) 1979: Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson...plus Kevin Lowe (three Hall of Famers) Chicago 1980: Steve Larmer and Denis Savard...plus Troy Murray (99 point Selke winner) Calgary 1981: Al MacInnis and Mike Vernon There are plenty more good drafts but Canucks 1999 is nothing to sneeze at, especially snagging the gems in such an otherwise weak year for talent. -

He is positioned exactly like Jim Mora when he talks about PLAYOFFS? and how the team is not making them. -

Well, they're done for. Time to watch the individual stats and hope we don't have pointless win streaks when they don't matter and just hurt the draft position. They had the chance to show what they were made of under pressure in the last five games or so when it mattered and they couldn't quite pull it off. -

Cliff was a tough little bastard. He was like Fleury just without the rage. I hated Bill Berg for the rest of his career when he basically dumped Cliff on his shoulder for no reason during a faceoff and injured him for..I don't know, 15 games or something, I don't remember. But it was the Duncan Keith on Daniel Sedin of the 90s for me. -

And Winnipeg got their AVCO Cups in the WHA. And some nice franchise scoring records from Hawerchuk and Teemu. And Bobby Hull if the WHA numbers count. But yeah nothing really worth mentioning in the NHL playoffs for them. Buffalo at least has suffered exactly as long as we have. They got off to the better start but we've had the better last 40 years. -

Rule of thumb has usually been that we're doing good (by our standards) if our team record is half the league record. At one point it was 212 points in a season for Gretzky and 86 points in a season for Gradin. It's still 63 points for Lidster and 139 points for Orr (138 for Coffey). -

Yeah I think iBatch has mentioned this as well but watching the current crop of young D-men is kind of reminiscent of the wave of talent that flooded in c.1980 plus or minus a couple years. All at once the league saw an influx of Coffey, Bourque, Reinhart, Babych, Housley, Larry Murphy, MacInnis, Scott Stevens, not to mention McCrimmon, Rob Ramage, Brad Marsh, Lanz, Butcher, Lowe, Huddy... Extend that window a couple more years in either direction and it brings in Doug Wilson, Chris Chelios, Randy Carlyle, Rod Langway, Barry Beck, James Patrick... -

The player that has come to mind for me since his rookie year was Phil Housley. Housley was a Norris finalist once, top five for the trophy maybe four times or so. Over 1200 career points. I think Hughes won't really come close to Housley's career points but will probably be a Norris finalist a few times before it's all said and done. Seems thus far like Makar and company will be the Leetch caliber guys a half step above Hughes but...most of the book has yet to be written. I personally have Hughes at a better than 50% chance of being a Hall of Famer so...not much to complain about really if he only turns out to be something like the 5th best defenseman of his generation. -

I think so too. Bloody Josi is on pace for 100 points this year though, and Makar isn't far off. -

Yep, and I remember from back when it happened that he scored in his first ever regular season game and his first playoff game. Anyway, he's the only Canucks D-man with a 20 goal season. Aucoin - 23 Doug Halward - 19 Rick Lanz - 18 Paul Reinhart / Dale Tallon / Jyrki Lumme / Ed Jovanovski - 17 Kevin McCarthy / Jocelyn Guevremont - 16 Bob Dailey / Kevin McCarthy / Jocelyn Guevremont / Rick Lanz - 15 Meanwhile... Paul Coffey - 48 Dave Babych is the only Canucks D-man to ever score a hat trick. Kind of a shame that nobody ever talks about and most people don't even know who Rick Lanz and Doug Halward are. Still #2 and #3 plus a run to the final for both of them in Canucks colors (Lanz was injured). -

Yeah I think there's only 12 players or so in the 80 point club. Guy's achievements are not to be taken lightly...some damn fine players like Skriko and Pederson never quite hit 80 as a Canuck. -

When it comes to scoring defensemen we've only really had two primo talents in Babych and Reinhart and in both cases got them after their prime. And obviously never a Leetch or MacInnis 100 point type. These guys were 70-80 point players. Everybody I listed in the OP was a hell of a player but Hughes is the first of his type to wear a Canucks jersey when he wasn't on the back nine of his career. Babych and Reinhart both topped out at around 6th place for the Norris Trophy. Hughes will be a finalist. -

Yep, he's going to blow away assists and points in a season and career. The only competition he would have really had is if we had either Babych or Reinhart for most of their careers. -
With his 53rd point tonight Quinn Hughes is an even 10 behind Doug Lidster for the all time best season by a scoring defenseman with 63 points. How many names can he take down... Ed Jovanovski - 48 points - surpassed Bob Dailey - 48 points - surpassed Alexander Edler - 49 points - surpassed Christian Ehrhoff - 50 points - surpassed Jocelyn Guevremont - 51 points - surpassed Doug Halward - 52 points - surpassed Kevin McCarthy - 53 points - tied Jyrki Lumme - 55 points Dale Tallon - 56 points Paul Reinhart - 57 points Rick Lanz - 57 points Dennis Kearns - 60 points Doug Lidster - 63 points He's coming after those scalps, how many will he get...

With JT Miller's 80th point tonight he matches Trevor Linden's career best and enters a pretty elite club of all time Canucks in a single season. How far up the ladder can he climb? 81 points to match Rota 85 points to match Ronning 86 points to match Gradin and Tanti 88 points to match Smyl 91 points to match Sundstrom 97 points to match Bertuzzi He's already in the pantheon of Canucks greats, already surpassed the peak points of Petri Skriko, Geoff Courtnall, Don Lever, Ryan Kesler, Andre Boudrias and Barry Pederson. For sure, Linden got Hart Trophy votes, was voted 4th best RW in the league at one point. He really wasn't as far away from the HOF as some people think. And Cliff got 85 points one year. -

I have a hard time making an intelligent guess as to his worth because of the moving parts involved in his contract and qualifying offer. So it's kind of hard to peg his value and also what the Canucks will want to do with him. Like I said...I'm not necessarily claiming that he will fetch more than moving up from 14th to 5th overall...but like I also said, that's kind of sad if a young player that has panned out quite well for a 5th overall can only bring back that return. Anyway as to Boeser straight across for a draft pick...I would have to guess a 2nd rounder at the very very worst. Maybe a 1st in a JT Miller kind of deal.
-
I dunno, maybe Boeser and a 2nd rounder. Like I said, I'm not necessarily saying Boeser is worth more on the open market...but I wouldn't trade him to move up 9 spots unless there was really no place for him on the team due to contract predictions etc.
