I mean, I would say coaching but they really seem to want to ride this train. Then I would say assets but (a) they are cap strung and (b) I'm not sure Benning is even allowed to make trades at this point. I don't need an ownership change. They guy spends to the cap and what more can you really ask for. I think it will probably ultimately be a clean sweep (coaching and GM) like what happened when Benning himself came on board. At least in fairly quick succession one after the other. If something actually happens during the year it will be the coach from the above options. Benning will be under orders not to trade the first rounder and then he'll probably walk the plank too if the team is still this bad at the end of the year.

[poll] Who should be the Captain of the Vancouver Canucks?
Kevin Biestra replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Yikes I hope nobody is saying that but then again a lot of people tend to exaggerate the current moment and its importance. Horvat really hasn't done anything other than the one playoff run to separate himself from Oddleifson. He's not yet at Lever or Boudrias levels. He's nowhere near Linden or Smyl. -
[poll] Who should be the Captain of the Vancouver Canucks?
Kevin Biestra replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Maybe. Crazy things have happened. Kevin McCarthy was a good captain and did nothing wrong, he just lost the C when Stan Smyl did a great job as acting captain in the playoffs. Then Stan resigned the C himself once he got old and wasn't playing every night. -

Not sure which is worse, this or Climate Pledge. Man I miss the days when it was all Pacific Coliseum, Calgary Saddledome, Maple Leaf Gardens, Joe Louis, MSG, Philadelphia Spectrum... -
I think he's already under orders from Aquilini forbidding him to do so and he'll probably be ousted if the Canucks are at the bottom of the standings at the end of the year. But even if he stays, I would bet there's a moratorium imposed on trading more 1st rounders.

If this season bombs, do you support a rebuild ?
Kevin Biestra replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
No, I would keep a bunch of the young players you named - provided they want to stay long term - but anyone Horvat and older I would start thinking about trading for value. Jim gave up several first rounders to be winning right now and if that's not going to happen, I guess we ought to start getting some back. -

Francesco Aquilini To meet with Jim Benning today
Kevin Biestra replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
So are they like snuggling on the couch and watching Netflix or are they actually talking about anything important? -
I will always salute and pledge my allegiance to Captain Kirk, but Corey Hirsch more or less took the starting job from him in 1995-96. It's not really fair to look back at Hirsch's career and only remember him from years before that just entering the league when he successfully unseated McLean down the road. Troy Gamble did the same thing around 1991. The team and fans were a little quick to drop McLean like a bad habit during an off year.

I'd consider anything but Keenan. Keenan is literally a sadist and possibly a psychopath. Brett Hull almost beat the crap out of him after what he did to Hawerchuk and somebody really should have.

The 1989-90 team was inexplicably horrible. Right after taking the Stanley Cup champions to game 7 overtime, they finished 2nd last in the NHL. While basically having the same team as the previous year plus Larionov and Krutov. Larionov and definitely moreso Krutov...there was some serious lack of chemistry and compatibility. I would have to call that the silver medal winner.

[Article] Top 10 Individual Offensive Playoff Runs in Canuck History
Kevin Biestra replied to -AJ-'s topic in Canucks Talk
If anything I would say 2020 is overappreciated if it has 3 of the 10 all time best playoff performances on any list. 30% of the list from 2020. 1982 was a run to the finals and it only gets one appearance on the list, at 10th place. Meanwhile Stan Smyl had 9 goals and 18 points in 17 games and isn't anywhere. I think 1982 is getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment. I would have had 1991 Cliff Ronning as an honorable mention myself. Cliff in 1991 was kind of like the 2020 performances that are being hailed here. It was putting the league on notice that the Canucks had big things ahead, and he was hands down the star of those playoffs. Cliff had 6 goals and 9 points in 6 games in 1991. Then 13 points in 13 games and 11 in 12 the following two years. I personally rate all of that on par with 2020, Mikael Samuelsson's best stuff, etc. Trevor and Pavel in 1994 are definitely 1 and 2. After that...The Sedins in 2011 and Smyl (82) and Gradin (82) are all kind of on par for the next four spots if you ask me. Kesler 2011 is a weird one. He had one of the best series in team history against Nashville, but was 0.42 points per game for the rest of the playoffs. -

Which draft bust hurt us the most ?
Kevin Biestra replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
Herter (or his replacement pick) would have been right in his prime. Two and three picks later, Bobby Holik and Mike Sillinger. Two rounds later, Nicklas Lidstrom and Kris Draper. Three rounds later, Robert Reichel and Sergei Fedorov... -
What Canucks podcasts are worth listening to ?
Kevin Biestra replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
There's a new guy called Parker's Pucks who is quite promising. Knows the game, seems like a natural broadcaster. -
Given the way the contracts lined up with the expansion draft, I don't see how Benning could have gotten anything for Markstrom. Markstrom wouldn't sign without a no trade clause and one goalie was being lost to Seattle. I don't think there was a way to keep Demko and get anything for Markstrom. The expansion draft just screwed the Canucks disproportionately. Canuck luck.

Serious question about perceived negativity around this team
Kevin Biestra replied to MeanSeanBean's topic in Canucks Talk
I was against moving McCann and Forsling at the time we did for what we got. McCann showed at least as well as Virtanen in year one and Forsling showed great promise internationally. Bonino won two Cups as a contributor and for one of them was among the top six choices for the Conn Smythe. Sutter is not going to match that by the time his career is up. And I was also guilty of underappreciating Bonino while we had him...but Benning is paid the big bucks to not do that. Sutter is decent and I was glad to see him join the Canucks but he hasn't been decent enough for either his salary or what was given up. Bonino was a legit return for Kesler, as it turned out. I don't really care much about how many teams a player suits up for. I've said earlier that we were Geoff Courtnall's fifth team when we got him. How many teams did Coffey and Jagr play for.
