Morrison was a fine player but I don't know how anyone wouldn't trade him for Linden, Gradin, Sundstrom or Ronning in the middle.
-
I don't know. I think the third line was Courtnall - Craven - Lafayette for the 1994 run. Adams – Linden – Bure Momesso – Ronning – Gelinas Courtnall – Craven – Lafayette Antoski – McIntyre – Hunter Courtnall and Craven have over 600 goals and 1500 points between them.

I agree, Petey's first two seasons are MUCH better than Henrik's. By the same token, not that much better than Trevor Linden's. And I do predict a very impressive career for Elias. Possibly a Hall of Fame career. But a lot of things can happen. After three seasons, Barry Pederson was basically a guarantee for the Hall of Fame going forward...until his shoulder fell apart. Yeah I didn't mean to be rough on the guy...just that I've seen a lot of things happen to a lot of players. Joe Juneau is one of maybe a half dozen players ever to get 100 points in his rookie year. Then...a Brendan Morrison sort of career. Certainly a good career but nothing close to what would have been expected after year one, where he was in the lofty company of Hawerchuk, Lemieux and Selanne. Tim Kerr was a lock for the Hall of Fame and then his body gave out before he could play quite enough games. We've had two other Calder winners in recent memory in Tyler Myers and Andrew Raycroft. Myers is a decent player, Raycroft is a $2000 Jeopardy question. Our first pick ever, Dale Tallon, set the all time NHL record for points by a rookie defenseman and had a good second year as well...he was looking as good as Hughes is now. Most Vancouver fans only know him as the guy who wasn't Gilbert Perreault.

Whoa Nelly, counting your chickens before they're hatched? I'm pretty sure Joe Juneau projected to be better than Elias after two years. And Barry Pederson. Elias may well surpass Henrik and Linden but one is a certain HOFer and the other was pretty close to the cusp of the HOF. I say let Petterson earn his place. I can't really give better than a 50% probability he will surpass Henrik so I don't think he's deserving at this stage. We're that sure Elias will be an Art Ross winner and league MVP?

No question whatsoever that it was McLean. Luongo is probably the most meltdown prone HOF goalie I've ever seen. He got to the Final in 2011 but he had to basically go through counseling to deal with the Yips for two separate stretches along the way.

Brodeur behind Cloutier? Lol. Brodeur 3x Canucks MVP, only Canucks goalie in history to do that. Stanley Cup Final. Led the entire NHL in SPCT in the 1982 playoffs including Billy Smith. Cloutier is ahead of King Richard in beachballs though. And he has the worst career playoff SPCT in NHL history of any goalie with 20 games. I like Cloutier well enough but that is ridiculous.

Do Canuck fans think Benning is a great GM?
Kevin Biestra replied to fanfor42's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah Milford is a badly overlooked GM and a name that doesn't come up as much as it should. A 5th rounder for Moe Lemay and Richard Brodeur. Glen Hanlon in the 3rd round 1977, Murray Bannerman in the 4th round. That's goalie drafting. 1978 - Bill Derlago, Curt Fraser, Stan Smyl in the first three rounds. 1979 - Rick Vaive, Brent Ashton, Dirk Graham. That's all before 1980 even and leaving out 1980s drafting and the cup run. -
I think Loui will be largely forgotten once his cap hit isn't actually hurting the team anymore. Messier hollowed out the locker room and the culture like a termite. I've never seen anything like it before or since in professional sports.

My prediction...

Yeah, it's beating an old drum for me of course, but it's impossible to tell the history of the Canucks without Richard Brodeur. Snepsts, Smyl and Gradin are all in from the 1982 team but not the guy who everyone agrees was most responsible for the journey to the final. Frankly, it's just kind of weird. Gradin belongs up there no doubt, but by just about every metric, intangible and otherwise that I can think of, Brodeur should have been up there before him. And I think the pre-Smyl/Brodeur/Gradin Canucks are really underrepresented. In the telling of the team's history in general. Just Orland, and I guess Harold as a transitional guy between the two eras. As for Gino...I've advocated for both the ROH and a statue so enough said there I figure.

That's a good story. Better than the story I told a while back about hundreds of cars driving to the airport in 1994 when the Canucks came back after Game 7 and we all got directed into a field by a bunch of cops scared after the riots and all we could do is kind of honk our horns from a mile away in some cornfield while the little dots in the distance known as the Vancouver Canucks kind of looked over confused at the noise for a second and then shrugged and went home. Then all of us just kind of shrugged and went home.

I agree that it's not an honor to hand out like Halloween candy. But there have been a few names overlooked that need to get in. I've campaigned for Richard Brodeur for some time. Our second captain (and part of our first ever 1970 team) Andre Boudrias should have been inducted while he was still alive. And the final two that absolutely belong are our two greatest enforcers, the role that requires the most heart and a role which no longer exists and must be honored, Gino Odjick and Tiger Williams (whose number Pat Quinn wanted to retire). I have some more names that deserve serious consideration but those four guys should be looking down at the fans every game. With the caveat about making sure Tiger is good to go off the ice, as he has been the subject of one or two lacklustre stories.

[Signing] Maple Leafs sign Joe Thornton
Kevin Biestra replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Craig Ludwig was a great playoff performer. He was a huge part of the D-corps in Montreal in the 86 and 89 runs to the Cup and then later on with Dallas. The only way to play lots of playoff games is to win lots of playoff games so you keep playing playoff games. Playoff games will be highly highly correlated with being a playoff performer. Anyway, Thornton isn't the greatest playoff performer of all time or anything, but his playoff record and accomplishments are better than Sedins and WAY better than Markus Naslund. -

144 playoff games with San Jose. That would be the Canucks record in a runaway. -

It's tradition. The greats go to the Maple Leafs to die. Leetch, Barrasso, Lindros, Housley, Larry Murphy, Ron Francis... -
Where did your brother finish in the standings in year one?
-
My fear with this new alignment for next year is that the Campbell Bowl and Prince of Wales Trophy might not apply, and in that case Bettman might just do away with them going forward. Guy never cared a fart for a single hockey tradition. Never should have renamed the divisions. The old ones had character.
-
Yeah I probably wouldn't either if I was in his shoes. What is he qualified for where he will make close to $1M per year for in life after hockey? Save for Randy Gregg, these guys aren't doctors. Ain't nobody paying Loui $1M to coach junior hockey or do radio color commentary, and that would be getting off to a decent start post-playing career. The guy has until his late 30s to make 90% of the money he'll ever make in his life.

Probably #2 behind Lays Chips Piggy.
-
I'm kind of willing to accept this upcoming year as a step back and another decent draft pick for the future. Questionable contracts of the past reared their heads and it's time to pay the piper.

[Signing] Sharks sign Patrick Marleau
Kevin Biestra replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hey good for Marleau. It's a pretty scared record but he's hung on and earned at a shot at it. What's Thornton's situation? Is he year to year waiting on a deal too?
