  1. I honestly don’t think he’s better than Montembeault at this point. He’s regressed since his break out season. Montembeault looked good and at times great last season behind a mostly rookie defence. He also looked good at the worlds leading Canada to gold. I can’t see wasting cap space and assets in Hart when they have Montembeault and Allen
  2. Guess what. He’s their top line winger. So yeah. He’s going to get o-zone starts. It’s not rocket science
  3. Caufield put up 46 in 83 games under MSL. WITH the shoulder injury. But sure. He’s not capable of putting up 40 a season lol
  4. Caufield was part of Montreals cup run a few years ago. He joined the team with 10 games left in the regular session. And wasn’t properly utilized by Ducharme in the playoffs (he even sat the first few games) but still managed to put up 12 points in 20 games.
  5. Bridge deals still have their place. Especially when you’re not sure what the player will ultimately be. But if a team really believes they have a special player they roll the dice and hope they end up underpaying for years.
  6. Yes. Locking in early can go wrong. Or it can end up being a huge windfall. Look at MacKinnon in Colorado. Signed him to a 7 year deal coming off his ELC before he had really broken out. He broke out 2 seasons later. Turned into one of the best value contracts in the league.
  7. It’s all but confirmed. Generally the official announcement comes mid summer but it doesn’t sound like teams can expect anything more than the $1m rise this year
  8. He and Suzuki have great chemistry. Both are locked up long term for close to the same cap hit.
  9. Just like the Jack Hughes signing was a big mistake right?
  10. And you thought Hughes wasn’t worth $4m a year. So.
  11. Here’s your thoughts on the Jack Hughes signing at the time. There’s literally 6 pages of almost everyone slagging the signing (with the notable exceptions of mll and N7Nucks who both liked the deal). Point is teams often gamble on locking in talented young players. Sometimes it pays off. Sometimes it doesn’t. Value contracts happen when GM’s guess right.
  12. I think most people would agree all those guys are underpaid. Why are they in great deals? Because their teams took a chance on the potential they saw and locked them in before they hit their full potential. Montreal just did the exact same thing. So congrats on confirming that locking in a talented young player early can pay off in spades.
  13. First off, Caufield was scoring at that rate WITH a bad shoulder. He sustained the injury early in the season but it wasn’t deemed bad enough to shut him down. They only shut him down when they did because the season was lost anyway and it gave him lots of time to recover and be ready for the 23/24 season. Second. This league pays goal scorers. Third. You’re buying 3 UFA seasons with this deal. That costs. Finally, your only retort to every point is “but Boeser…..” yes. Injury risk is a thing. But not all injuries are as career altering as Boeser’s. McDavid broke his clavicle in his first season. He seems to have bounced back. Eichel broke his f’in neck. His looking like the MVP for Vegas in their cup run. Caufield has fantastic chemistry with Suzuki and now both are locked up long term. It’s a win for Montreal. Could it sour ? Sure. Any long contract has the potential to turn bad
  14. Caufield scored 46 goals in the 83 games he played under MSL. Let’s say they bridged him for 2-3 years and he keeps that pace up. The salary cap will be substantially higher by them. So instead of getting him for $7.85 x8 they’d likely be looking well north of $10 per. He’d also be eligible for arbitration by then. Or maybe he starts looking for greener pastures by then like Tkachuk or Dubois. (Or possibly Pettersson.). So yes. There are risks with signing him to this contract now. But there are also significant risks with bridging him.
  15. 48 goals in 83 games under. MSL. Locked in now while the cap is artificially low. Takes him through his age 30 year. This deal has the potential to be a huge bargain in a couple years when the cap goes up significantly. Is there risk? Of course. There always is with a long term signing. But saying this is a bad deal right off the bat is plain wrong. Pretty much everyone who is paid for their opinions on hockey is saying it’s a good deal.
  16. Caufield has had 1 injury that required surgery. I wouldn’t say he can’t stay healthy. Also, he’s put up 48 goals in 82 games since MSL took over. Garland isn’t a comparable in any way
  17. The thing is they’re not as bad as their record from the past 2 seasons indicates. They’ve lost over 700 man games to injury in both of the last 2 seasons.
  18. Pretty team friendly structure. Only has signing bonuses the first 2 years. Real dollars less than the cap hit from year 5 on. No NMC
  19. How do you figure they won’t contend for 8 years? A lot can happen in that time. They have some excellent pieces in place and a top 5 prospect pool. They could be contending in 3-4 years.
  20. It’s a damn safe bet. Would you think Vancouver would accept a similar offer for Hughes? Morrissey is older but he’s a couple inches taller, signed for 1 more year than Hughes, put up the same number points in the same number of games (but with more goals), and most importantly, he has a full NMC. So yeah. I’ll assume Winnipeg rejects that extremely underwhelming offer
  21. Dubois has said he’s willing to play elsewhere. Whether or not Vancouver is on that list is anyone’s guess
