That’s definitely the one piece from Vancouver that mist fits with Montreal’s needs. Thing is Domi is most effective as a C. Acquiring him as a winger doesn’t make a ton of sense beyond his close friendship with Horvat
-
That package does nothing for Montreal. They’re looking for a top 6 scoring winger. Virtanen is more a bottom 6 guy. Domi might be moved because they don’t have room at C. They also have Poehling waiting in the wings so Guadette does nothing for them. They need an experienced backup for 1 or 2 years tops until Primeau is ready to step in.

Keep in mind that just about every double digit contract in the league was signed when the cap was lower than it is now. Top end players will always get their money.

That’s brutal for Arizona. They have way worse cap issues than Vancouver and you want them to take 2 cap dumps, a pending RFA bottom 6 forward with arbitration rights, two unproven D prospects (one with extensive injury history) and a 2nd and 3rd pick. Neither of which is in this years draft. They don’t get a high end piece in return and literally don’t have the cap space to take on the extra $3+M

That would be rough. Lol

Agreed. D and goalies typically take longer to develop so you seldom have a concrete idea of what they’re going to turn out to be at age 18. That’s why you don’t see many goalies go top 20 and why so many D taken in the 1st round bust and so many top notch D come in the .2nd. So yeah. I’ll definitely concede that

Yes. There are still very good players in the pipeline. My response was to someone who said the key was to keep drafting like they have been. My point spies to every team as they improve. Not just the Canucks. Generally speaking you get the best players in the draft in the top 10. (Horvat, Hughes and Pettersson were all top 10 picks). As any team improves their chances at picking those top 10 players disappear. That doesn’t mean you still can’t hit a home run in the draft. But it’s far less likely. I did say you can still get the occasional gem. But it’s no secrets that the chances of getting a NHL player drops off dramatically after the 1st round. Vancouver has managed to get two legit superstars in the past few years. They probably got the best player in both of those drafts. Now they’re moving up the standings and their opportunity to have the best chance at players like Hughes and Pettersson is pretty much past. That’s all I meant when I said it’s unrealistic to expect the team to “keep drafting like they have been”.

Arizona doesn’t have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd in this years draft

In a NHL where the cap is going to be flat for a minimum of three years cap space is incredibly valuable. There are a limited number of teams with cap flexibility. It’s going to be a buyers market for teams with cap space. Everyone else will have to rely on hickey trades where cap in = cap out. You’re fooling yourself if you think teams are going to do Vancouver a favour by taking a guy like Sutter. He’s overpaid for where he plays in the lineup and he can’t stay healthy. Vancouver is going to need to pony up a good asset to move him or they’ll need to rest Ian a significant portion of his contract.

I always laugh any time someone uses the Gretzky trade to support their arguement. It was 30 years ago. The NHL today bears little resemblance to the NHL he was traded in. Gone are the days of being able to sell a contract. There was no such thing as a salary cap. No such thing as no trade clauses. The Coyotes are in cap trouble and have very few picks. That’s why insiders are SPECULATING that they might be open to moving players. To my knowledge there hasn’t been any reports of them specifically shopping OEL. Even if they were. Vancouver would need to pull of a miracle to make cap space for him. And even then there are other teams in a better position to offer a significant package for him.
-
The thing is he’s been used in a top 6 role in Vancouver on occasion. It’s not like it’s never been tried.
-
That’s unrealistic. Not only is the draft a roll of the dice. But Vancouvers young stars were all top 10 picks (with the exception of Boeser). As the team improves the number of high end prospects coming through the system will decrease. You’ll still get the odd gem, but by in large Vancouver has probably picked it last superstar for quite awhile.

I never said a 30+ guy. But Virtanen has never even hit 20. He’s ideally suited to bottom 6 He’s just not what they’re looking for. Montreal has cap space and assets to spend to bring in a player that does fill their needs. As far as Danault goes. He’s unhappy with his deployment in the playoffs. He sees himself as a 1C but realistically he’s a good 2C, elite 3C. He’s had Selke mentions the last two seasons and he’s a valuable player. He’s signed for another year and they’re talking about whether he’ll re-sign after next season if he’s relegated to 3C. It’s a situation to keep an eye on but hardly a crisis.

Montreal has 22 picks in the next two drafts. It could be Domi + picks against a player on a cap strapped team. Forcing a Virtanen square peg into a scoring role isn’t going to accomplish what Montreal needs. Bergevin has already stated he’s willing to move this years 16th OA for immediate help. Domi + 16OA gets you a lot closer to a legit top 6 winger.

The speculation stems from the fact that Domi removed “Montreal Canadiens” from his twitter bio. That’s verifiable.
