Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread
qwijibo replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
Viper’s point is you really have no idea what the holdup is. It could be term, or signing bonus structure,or trade protection. It’s not as simply as “here’s 8x8, now sign on the dotted line”. Jumping to conclusions is what’s causing you frustration. -

What he’s worth today isn’t the point. The point is you can’t use his contract as an example in today’s NHLPA because his contract can’t be replicated in today’s nhl. It would be like shel. The cap hit (and by extension the percentage of the cap his contract took up at time of signing) we’re artificially lowered using tactics thst simply aren’t available anymore. yes. Crosby is still worth his cap hit, but that’s not the point. The point is the contract was structured the way it was to artificially lower thst cap hit by lowering his salary in the years he would have been likely to retire. -

You’re making zero sense. You’re trying to use a contract that would be illegal in today’s nhl to discount a new contract. What I’m saying is you can’t take a 12 year contract that takes the player to age 38 and employed cap circumvention salary drops in the final 3 seasons and say it’s the benchmark percentage for what current players should accept. -

No. He didn’t. Pittsburgh tried to circumvent that cap and it’ll i end up biting Crosby in the ass. The years Crosby was making $12.5m a season Ovechkin was making $9m. Either way Crosby’s contract isn’t a good comparable for today’s pushers because the way it was structured isn’t a possibility anymore. -

Fine. If you you want to look at his contract as a whole then you can’t use it as a comparable to current contracts that are restricted from using the tactics that Pittsburgh employed. It’s not an apples to apples comparison and it makes it a meaningless case study. -

He likely expected to retire by 35. He got his money in the first 9 years. Painting him as an altruistic player who took one for the team isn’t accurate nor is it applicable in today’s nhl. Current contracts are limited to 8 years and have strict rules to prevent the kind of cap circumvention that Pittsburgh pulled there. -

So don’t paint it in a light that he took less money to help the team win. He didn’t. The team used a loophole which is now closed. Crosby still got what he was worth. -

Crosby’s deal as 14.5% of the team’s cap when the deal was signed. And only because it was a 12 year deal that was lowered substantially by the final 3 years at $3m a season. If you want to use Crosby as an example then you have to look at the first 8 years of the contract. -

You’re ignoring a couple of key facts regarding Crosby’s contract. it was a 12 year deal that takes him to 37. The last 3 years of the contract his salary drops to $3m a season. If you take the last 4 years off the deal to compare apples to apples (ewuivent to today’s 8 year max contracts) his AAV would be $10.75m. Considering the cap was $60m when the deal was signed that puts him at 17.9% of the team’s cap. Just shy of the max contract for the time. He was actually paid $12m a year for the first 4 years. He really didn’t take less money. The only favour he did for the team (which today’s players can’t do) is let the team add years 10-12. At $3m a year to bring his cap hit down -

There’s more to it than just a dollar amount. We don’t know what the holdup is and you have to remember that with the flat cap Benning has to have an eye on future contracts as well. You can assume all you want about what has and hasn’t been offered. But clearly the right deal for both the players and the team hasn’t been tabled yet -

At the end of the day it’s a business and this is their career. They aren’t the first players to hold out (if they actually do) and they won’t be the last. NHL careers can be very short. You have to make hay while you can. And if the team is expecting you to carry the responsibility of being a top player then the player isn’t wrong to expect to be paid as such -

Lol ok. So you’ve full on turned on Quinn because of something his brother said. That’s not a total overreaction or anything -

He can address it after the deal is inked. -

That’s not for Quinn to do. I guarantee he’s under orders from his agent to not say anything. He’s not responsible for what his brother says in an interview. -

Why hold what his brother said against him? If that cane from his agent it would be a different story -

Lol. Blaming the league for Benning not being able to get a deal locked in yet. Now I’ve seen everything. If Tampa got them locked up quickly it would be because they’re a 2 time cup winning team in a state with advantageous tax laws and gorgeous weather. But sure. It’s the leagues fault a team that’s finished near the bottom for several years can’t get their stats (that they got by finishing near the bottom) can’t get a quick , cheap deal done -
Or he could be what he is now. A very good, roughly ppg, player with durability issues.

If you say so

My point is Marner is more valuable to Toronto than Pettersson would be. Especially cons Feting your ridiculous overpayment trade suggestion. Toronto has Matthew’s and Taveres as their top 2 C’s. So Pettersson bring a C adds no value. Marner has been durable while Pettersson has had issues staying in the lineup Marner has been well over a PPG player the last 3 seasons. Pettersson is just shy of a ppg. Despite that you think Pettersson would be so much more valuable to Toronto thst they should retain more than $3.5m on Marner and pay Pettersson has $9+ m ask. Effectively paying Pettersson over $12.5m. Plus you want them to add a 1st. Does that seem remotely reasonable to you?
