I don't disagree at all... but if you get a chance to take a high skilled 50 point brother of the Norris winner in the 4th round, i think it's a good time to go for it.

You don't think anybody can overcome their size though haha

This and I would like to add to that statement a little bit in regards to "cementing one aspect". When you think about all the pieces we really need in the future. Powerforwards, Skilled centreman, puck moving dman ect, you really want to get the absolute best guy you can in that area. Thats a task i think that can be accomplished with this pick. Ritchie is the biggest.. and the toughest goal scoring powerforward to come along in a very long time. you might find a virtanen down the road but not a ritchie. Therefore i consider him the BPA at the type of player he is than you are probably going to find in the next ten years. Then next year maybe we're staring at a solid puck moving defenseman or a guy similar to Nik Ehlers. Maybe this "ehlers" has at extra inch and ten pounds on him. take a look at all the positions you need to fill down the road and see who in that range is the best at his trade. Point is your in position to hit an absolute home run in the powerforward department. this kind doesnt come around often

That is exactly my point, my friend. What did you think about the rest of my post? It was entirely directed at showing how drafting Nick Ritchie and creating Contagious Confidence and team toughness can give players like Subban a better chance at success. I refer back to the team that does it better than anyone. Tory Krug 5'9 180lbs, just had a 40 point rookie season playing on a team built that way. Brad Marchand is another member of the midget club that succeeds in that environment. Trade Schroeder to the bruins and see how he does with the time and space to really apply his skills.

Appreciate the insight and i actually think you are right when i think about it that way. Theres probably a similar player in the third or fourth round that maybe didnt play on quite as good a team. I think about how Corrado flew under the radar but the canucks recognized how good he really was.

Yeah the way I look at it is, you have a chance to get that rare breed right now. That crazy tough power forward that's one of the biggest top six players in the nhl. That guy you wish you could have had but he went 6th overall. Get him now, you got plenty of time to grab skilled guys in future drafts. Hell, maybe you score Fiala in the early second round. So many skilled guys fall in drafts. Shinkaruk was ranked 12th or something in the deepest draft. Build that contagious confidence foundation I'm talking about this year with the 6th overall(unless someone slips of course). You're never going to have a better chance to do it than adding Nick Ritchie to Kassian. Now 5'11 doesn't look too bad in every round after and every draft after this one. You're setting the foundation for the next nick Ehlers to succeed... There's Ehlers in every draft, Ritchie is a freak of nature that doesn't come around this often ranked as the 6th best 18 yr old in the world.

I think everybody tries to paint the bruins as a team of goons because of their toughness. In reality they are just a perfect mix of exactly what you said size skill speed and rolling 4 lines. The best in the nhl actually. They aren't a bunch of talentless goons that punch their way to victory night in and night out. They play hard, tough, confident and skilled hockey. If anything we should be following their model. They have it all(not just toughness) and roll 4 lines with ease. Every guy not only makes plays and tries to score, but plays tough and with authority. Nobody backs down. This is why I think drafting a guy like Ritchie would be a huge step in the right direction. We don't have to keep adding more nick Ritchie's but just one more guy that is even tougher than Kass with offensive skill is perfect. This allows Kassian to consistently play tough, not have the odd timid night.. He doesn't take a night off because Ritchie's not taking a night off. Ritchie isn't taking a night off because Kassian isn't. That kind of confidence is contagious. Now Bo Horvat thinks he's 2 inches taller, hunter shinkaruk thinks he's 2 inches taller. Cole Cassels? You know damn well that gritty SOB is going to think he's 5 inches taller... Now you have a team that steps onto the ice every night and says this is our frackin ice!... Not just with their fists, but they are damn ready to fly if you even look at Bo, Nicky or Hunter, but also with their God Given Skills. All the sudden when you're drafting those small skilled guys that fall to the late first round, you're not so concerned with "jeez I don't know if his size will be able to handle the nhl". He's going to step into a team that demands respect and gives him the room he needs to succeed. All the sudden Jordan subban has a bright future ahead of him as a high point man in the NHL. Just my two cents... In my opinion your not going away from speed and skill by drafting toughness, your giving the speed and skill you do draft, confidence and the absolute best chance at having success at the nhl level.

I usually just google the players name and things like draft profile or player bio. Lots of times you can find a great write up on him. Sometimes it's just some news paper but the good ones will have quotes from coaches and scouts that give great insight and views you never really thought of.

Thats insane. we'd be an even crappier version of the oilers
-
I really llike this.. imagine we do it and end up getting draisaitl with the first pick haha. I think i would take virtanen if hes still there then. Then with the late pick go for Fiala, high end skill/speed and not quite as light as the others.
-
What? haha how do you get nylander/ehlers out of theres some big powerful forwards available? Even if i was on the Ehlers train I'd be thinking Ritchie Virtanen after seeing that.
-
Haha I know, I just couldn't resist
-
That's what I mean though, there has to be some sleepers in there. Every 18 yr old defenseman in the world this year can't all be duds can they?.. It's just my speculation and you definitely know more than I do. I just had a though if everyone else is sleeping on these kids it might be a chance to grab one that in the long run should have been a first rounder had the forwards not stole the show when they were 18.
-
We even hurt their Virtanen and they still nick Ritchied us hahaha
-
Got smashed by a team with more Nick Ritchie's lol
-
I say we take a dman. Its pretty slim on D in the first round, if only 4 or 5 go in the first round you could end up with a real gem. the 5th or 6th best in the draft. Thats of course if a beauty forward doesnt fall to our spot, i.e. Lemieux
-
This thread is hilarious. The only way to settle it is to have a prospect-off. A 3 day challenge between Ritchie and Virtanen featuring Wipeout like obstacle courses, survivor like problem solving challenges and the finale of an intense Redbull Crashed Ice downhill course. May the best teenage hockey player win!

Man what a smart kid. Thinking like that he'll only get better with age and experience. I mean that in he will learn more how to use that energy at the right times. Turn his amp to 11 when he needs to and conserve with positional play when he doesn't. This will get more accurate with every game he plays.
-
Anyone who watched the entire thing could see he played outstanding and should have been given those games. Had we not been still loaded with our obviously watered down depth contracts, he probably would have. CDC was up in arms as both him and Bo were sent down. Hunter outplayed current roster players in preseason. Bo was mediocre for me, didn't wow enough for the 9 games.
-
My thoughts exactly.. That's the beauty of picking 6th also if your thinking about it the way we do. I'm sure the scouts have some doubts in some of the 6-12 players too but they get to pick they one they feel is the absolute best of the rest after extensively watching all of them. Ritchie, Ehlers, Virtanen, whoever they pick is probably going to have a great career for us. Bo Horvat is sure looking like a great pick right now. Hunter nearly made the team as an 18yr old. Our later recent firsts Jensen and gaunce are looking great as well. I think it's safe to say our first round pick is in good hands. I look at it more as, let's play the "it would be sweet if it's this guy" game and think about how sick it will be if he can do what he does in his YouTube videos in the nhl... Not, they're idiots if they pick this guy, he'll never reach potential according to my internet scouting
-
I think Florida takes him. They're pretty stacked up front
-
That would probably work out in our favor actually, I could see them goin for a guy like Ritchie with the 5th pick, take the skilled centre with the 2nd and then go for the massive power forward with the 5th. They traded Kassian and this kids even bigger and tougher plus skill. Then we get leftovers on the top 5
-
The other thing I like about Ritchie is he can step in and play as mean as he wants right away. He's got the size to throw down with the toughest in the league. If he wants to put a smelly glove in the face of the other teams captain, what are they gonna do about it? Sure someone will step up but good luck with that haha 6'3 230 at 18 yrs old Kassian plays tough but I bet he'll get even meaner with Ritchie in the top six as well. Not just him either, the whole team will play like they're 2 inches taller. I highly doubt Marchand would have as much confidence as he does playing for the oilers.
-
How sick would it be to have Ritchie and Kassian in our top six one day.. We'd beat down any team in the league haha
