Canucks release 2023-24 regular season schedule
zimmy replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
A 9 game home stand in March? Am I seeing that right? That’s an uncomfortably long stretch, the kind that can often backfire on a middling team. -
It is creeping up We anticipate the call then bow in prayer

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

You have effectively summed up the CDC manifesto\mission statement. I’m not sure this serves better as a disclaimer or the wording for a CDC masthead. Probably both. -
I’m feeling a draft that is blowing with some doubt as to its intent

Now stand defiant! There will be that sure assent To the mountain top!

Disillusionment Clouds over what might be hope Is there a way out?

I’ll take a bit of license here but you have succinctly voiced what seems to be the perfect hockey philosophy : “Entrenchment of systems to reduce decision making variables”. This should be the goal of every organization. Not that I want Red Army style robotic adherence! You have to let your creators create! But to win there must be a level of single minded, consistent pursuit of clear and well established goals. Seems that CoachRT gets this (?)

Got excited when I saw the topic title. There was no question mark in the topic title so I thought you were actually going to dispense the news of what happened to Dale Talon. For real am interested in this as his name randomly came into my head when the boys on radio were talking Canucks draft room/table in an aside. Now I gotta know for sure.

Nothing really lost here. Open contract spot for a more likely to hit prospect is a net gain.

It’s okay if he proves me wrong (I hope he does for his sake) but I’ve just never seen the motor. Othmann seems to have it, for instance. Lockhart is smart, shifty and opportunistic. He just doesn’t drive the play at this level as a twenty year old (Covid complications in mind).
-
Except overtime loss points were counted as ties in the old days. Those points were never considered loser points. They were well earned(usually). I’ve never looked at an OT loss as a “loss” for that reason. In the day there was nothing wrong with kissing your sister ! It’s all those additional shootout wins that skew records in my opinion. As far as passion goes, there was admittedly lots of that in the eighties as well as a slew of great characters. I grew up with them and would defend them with great fervour but until PQuinn showed up there was really little to be hopeful for and too many depressing years to endure.

Being bad from 83-88 is misleading because they continued to be bad until 91 when I think they managed 64 points ( yes, we’ll always have 89!). Those mid eighties teams were atrocious, as much as the young me loved them, mustering together 3 fifty (50) nine (9), 59 point seasons out of four. I’ve worn my share of rose coloured glasses but man, that was a horrible stretch. Playing 500 hockey (which this team has basically pulled off since the bubble) was an insane dream in the eighties. In my mind, there’s no comparison in actuality, though you might make the case for an emotional one.

Ah yes, the vagaries of judgement when it comes to drafting. Every draft has a story as do each of the selections. Right place right time, late bloomers, safe picks, sexy picks. Sure would be nice if it was all just irrefutable science, although it wouldn’t be half as much fun around here without the hand wringing, trauma and on going stress. With you on Talon. Never saw him play but have a good read on him historically. He becomes a bigger star if Philly gets him, right? I mean Bob Daily blossomed there after we traded him there.

5 km/h slower and 7 psi softer. Just unscientific estimates - (but have you seen this guy play?)

(Rumour) Canucks Blackhawks at the draft
zimmy replied to Baratheon's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Said every team every year who didn’t pick first (except those picking 2 who wouldn’t be looking a few spots up, only one). -
A player that pops! Yes, I’m down with this. I’m of the mind , though, that when we look at consensus rankings, “safety” is a valued and historically consistent attribute when it comes to selections. And , I believe, that often the safe pick is the eventual “right” pick. Hey, maybe we blew it that first year by taking the safe, expected pick Dale Tallon over Reggie Leach?
-
Are you suggesting that “safe” is never the way to go? And by “safe” I assume you mean the combined public/private consensus. An interesting draft strategy if taken to its logical conclusion of trying to hit a home run with each and every pick. I suppose there’s a actual GM out there willing to give it a try.

2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship

+15 last year. I’m sure he had the same brain and gave at least the same level of crap about his team. But go ahead, just like many around here, by all means, get your kicks in. #Vancouvertradition -
(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller
zimmy replied to combover's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
WADR, O’Reilly, at best, is a place holder. JT is a difference maker. I’m convinced they believe in the cult of the canes down there and were sure they would prevail over the long haul. Recent playoff results sure seem to indicate something is missing and players like Ryan O’Reilly are simply not getting them any closer. JTM would. -
