If anyone missed Benning on the training camp media availability video, when asked which prospects separated themselves from the rest, he mentioned Boeser, Juolevi, Gadjovich, and Lind. Later he mentioned MacEwen and Chatfield.
-
Yes that's true. He has so many tools in his tool kit I missed that one. Lind's ability that separates him from an ordinary prospect though, and has enabled him to get results like he has had, is on the mental side of things. Namely his vision, hockey IQ and mental toughness. Sure, he wouldn't be as effective with lesser hands, agility, and size, but there are lots of players that never made the NHL or had mediocre careers that had all his physical skills but were lacking on the mental side. This is what gives some of us confidence that Lind has a bright future.

^ Very well thought out and realistic post. I am quite sure Jake will be "slow cooked" and given enough time to develop to his full potential. On the other hand, Alf's post....Though deep in my fanatical heart, I too have visions of Virtanen running roughshod imposing his will in games. Dominating with his combination of elite skating, size, physicality, and toughness. Maybe in a couple of more years, Virtanen will fulfill this vision that most Canuck fans have and validate Benning selecting him at 6th overall. I can hardly wait.

Yes, impressive vision and IQ. His skating isn't too bad either. Plus he has an edge and potential as a power forward. Add 20-25 lbs on that frame and he could definitely fill a top 6 role for us.

Yeah, that is why I love CDC. Everyone is different but all are passionate. I learn lots about my favorite team and sometimes get some really good entertainment. Who needs television.

I love your posts because they are so informative and helpful. I love this post because it gave me something I haven't had for it seems a while now - a really good laugh. That is why I miss posters like Desi and Clutch, the responses to their posts were mostly hilarious.

I was just looking at MacEwen's PMs as I pondered what Nazzy was saying above ^. I have to think that to make it in the NHL, he will have to bring that aggressive mentality of his, consistently. He has the size, aggressiveness and raw skill. If he is to be successful, he will have to play more like a Patrick Maroon than say a Shawn Mathias.

Interesting pod cast on Canuck's Army Episode 31, hosted by Satiar Shah with J. D. Burke. They talk about how much they like the drafting of Pettersson, Lind, Gadjovich, DiPietro, and Palmu. They talk a lot about Pettersson having the highest ceiling and only knock is his weight. They like the fact that all the picks were within the range and not off the board.https://soundcloud.com/satiar-shah

Kudos to the Ducks org. for identifying Zack's potential early. My guess is he signed with us because he sees more opportunity here.

I wonder how many years it will take in the minors before big Mac is ready to contribute to the big club.
-
Ha ha yeah CDC ... I can see it now. A 22 y.o. Pettersson gets 30ish points in his second NHL season. There would be people calling him a bust and maybe even a topic "Pettersson? Do We Really Need Him?".
-
Yeah, I worded that kind of funny. What I meant was what better way to temper expectations for Pettersson's future progression than to compare it with Henrik's draft +7 years to reach first line status. I will correct it.
-
I agree. After making my post I thought of these same points. Thanks for posting them. Pettersson is a different player from Henrik and Daniel and they will play in a different NHL. However, there are some similarities, specially their physique such that I thought Alf made a good point comparing his physical development and points progression with them. I do hope Pettersson's point progression is faster than the Sedins but the main aim of my post was to reign in unrealistic expectations generated by the excitement of drafting a potential successor to Henrik. What better way to temper expectations for Pettersson's future progression than to compare it with Henrik's draft +7 years to reach first line status.

Virtanen causing havoc and shooting from his off wing. Dhalen also shooting from his off wing on the other side and going to the net. Pettersson finding the open space and open winger. Two small but fast, slick Swedes and a big hard hitting Canadian. Classic Euro skill and North American grit. I am going to have nice dreams tonight.

draft +7 years before the twins put up big numbers (just under ppg) and developed enough to merit consideration as more than 2nd liners. Even then they were still getting knocked down on their derriere. They still sometimes do. I agree, I think Pettersson will develop similarly to the Sedins. Similar weight ( around 190 lbs) and will probably be knocked around a bit for his first couple of years in the NHL any way. I do think Pettersson will fair better ( physicality wise) than the Sedins because he is faster and more elusive. As for the big numbers, well I would rather guess on the conservative side and be pleasantly surprised. How does greater than 60 points 7 years from now sound? Disappointing I know, but it is better than expecting more and sooner than getting frustrated and angry if he doesn't meet those expectations.

I fully agree. Gadjovich, of all our picks interests me the most. He has all you have mentioned which is a lot going for a late second rounder, and best of all, he has the compete and drive that enabled players like Burrows to reach their full potential. What I like most about Gadjovich is that, we need a player like him to complement our team. Could see him be a difference maker in the games that matter most (like the playoffs). He could definitely improve on his skating. I think this is the main reason he dropped. But like I said, I am confident he will work hard and diligently on his skating and anything else he has to. He will do whatever it takes.

At the very least penalized into submission.

I wouldn't be happy if Gaudette ends up only playing a total of 200 NHL games. I would say something would have to go wrong for this to happen. I see some Burrows in him. His skill set and most importantly his Burrows like compete level and tenacity should enable him to have a long NHL career (crossing fingers).

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Yeah. Imagine Petterson going to the AHL and ending up with injury problems similar to Rodin. -

It could turn out just like you say. Pettersson could become the better player between him, Glass, and Valardi. Just like Filip forsberg went #11 in 2012 and Erik Karlsson #15 in 2008. Arguably the top player in their respective drafts yet went outside of the top 10. I really like his offensive upside and compete, I just don't like his body. I would still pick Glass over him. Glass is a better fit for our team. We need size playing in the west and for the playoffs when anything goes. Plus Glass is a play maker and will turn out to be a good NHL'er. In other words, Benning will probably draft Pettersson and a lot of people, including myself, will have varying degrees of post traumatic stress disorder, at least temporarily anyway. -

^ Haha. Exactly. I expect Benning to come out of this draft with at least 3 NHL'ers with the draft picks he currently holds. -

I agree. He of course thinks like a pro and acts accordingly like you say which bodes very well for his future NHL career. This draft is going to produce some good NHL'ers. There was a poster earlier that compared this draft to the 2012 draft because of no generational or maybe even no franchise player. I think it was a good comparison. But even the 2012 draft produced more than a dozen good NHL'ers in the first round like at #3 Alex Galchenyuk, #5 Morgan Rielly, #6 Hampus Lindholm, #7 Mathew Dumba, #9 Jacob Trouba, #11 Filip Forsberg, #15 Cody Ceci, #16 Tom Wilson, #17 Tomas Hertl, #18 Teuvo Teravainen, # 19 Andrei Vasilevskiy, #22 Olli Maatta, and #30 Tanner Pearson. Then there are the second rounders like; Jake McCabe, Colton Sissons, Chris Tierney, and Damon Severson. Third rounders; Joonas Korpisalo, Shayne Gostisbehere, Matt Murray, Colton Parayko, and Frederik Andersen. Fourth round; Josh Anderson, Cedric Paquette, and Andreas Athanasiou. Fifth round and beyond; Connor Hellebuyck, Ben Hutton, Colin Miller, Connor Brown, and Matthew Benning. Like a lot of you know, this draft is not "sexy" but it is deep. Deep into the second round deep plus the steals in later rounds. Glass and his fellow top five represents the ceiling. Hard to imagine Benning not coming up with a very good NHL'er at #5. -

You can go this way too, Glass and Makar. I would take Glass before Makar however. -

I like Makar too at #5. I just feel there is more risk with him. -

Because Heiskanen is BPA at #3. However, I am willing to take Glass at #3 just to make sure we don't miss out on him.
