1. Very nice, thanks. I have a feeling this draft is going to play out like you invision. I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with at least 2 defensemen in the first 3 rounds.
2. You make a convincing point and it may turn out that Virtanen doesn't make the Canucks this season. However, Virtanen brings something none of the above listed players bring to the table. So to quote the advertising slogan, "if he can play he can play". Benning will make room for Virtanen if he is ready.
3. I would like to know what Benning has to say about this new prospect. So far his projections for acquisitions like Sbisa, Pedan and Clendening have been quite accurate.
4. I am into RTS and RPG games. I played a lot of the Total War series, StarCraft, Dragon Age, The Witcher and Elder Scrolls. The past few months I have only played Warband. At first I didn't like it because I was lousy at riding a horse but it has turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. Warband has the elements of my favorite RTS games plus my favorite RPG games. It does the best fighting on horseback simulation that I know of. You get to use tactics and strategy to win battles and wars with your troops while building up your forces. You recruit levies and level them up to become effective fighters. You gather companions and equip and customize them (and yourself of course) so that you have an effective fighting force or warband. You need to do this because you start of as a weak solitary individual with nothing but the basic equipment fighting to stay alive. Your world is full of enemies like bandits and rebels. It is also full of feudal lords with many armies and lands at war with various factions. It is a long road (but fortunately you are on horseback) towards kingship. The vanilla game is okay but what makes Warband great are all the full conversion modifications available. It has been a few years since its release in 2010 so the selection of mods are numerous. One of the best is a Game of Thrones mod called A Clash of Kings. There are also mods for multiplayer games like Full Invasion 2 or even persistent worlds if you are into that kind of thing.

My prospect rankings

I like it. Nice work.
6. Projections in general look conservative. However, I tend to be optimistic in my projections so your predictions are probably close. Good job.
7. Unbelievable! Isreal? Linden has done it again. We have our man Willie Desjardins!
8. Hmm...I usually get a good laugh here on CDC so I am looking forward to that.
9. Okay I am still on page 139 so at that point Ehlers seemed ahead on CDC and there were still alot making a case for Ritchie. I have a lot of reading to do to catchup to page 221!
10. Interesting interview with GMJB this afternoon on TEAM 1040. There is a thread and a link and he had some interesting things to say on what will happen. When asked about the upcoming draft Benning said "I like this draft class...the top six players and we pick six right now, I really like the top six guys so whatever guy we end up with at six I am going to be happy with and with that 36th pick we have identified some guys that are going to be there...and in the mid rounds too we have a good feel for from other parts of the world..." Obviously he is vague on who the players they are targeting at around their picks. What is interesting to me is that according to Benning, who I trust as a good talent evaluator, there is a top six not a top five. I was wondering if the CDC consensus player for that sixth spot is Nylander or is it Ehlers or?
11. This thread has really helped with my knowledge of the potential kids we could be picking. I saw the recent Youtube video of Nylander and now find out that he played most of his hockey in NA. I am starting to like this Nylander kid. Specially if he grows to over 6' and around 200 pounds.
12. Yes. The Canucks will draft whoever they draft and I will be thrilled and excited for our future. With such a high pick and a decent crop I am sure they will pick a kid with a lot of heart and have themselves a future NHL player. I am confident the Canucks will pick the right player. A testament to this is that their recent picks are killing it in the playoffs which means these prospects must have a lot of passion for the game. It would be an added bonus if Virtenan was the kid they picked because I am partial to WHL players with size and grit.
13. I will defer to you concerning Virtenan and any other draft prospects since it is hard scouting on Youtube. I only brought up the comparison with Kassian since he is criticised for a low IQ like Virtenan has been. My only wish is the Canucks draft a kid with a lot of heart, the rest can be taught or developed. You can't teach or develop heart/passion for hockey. You either have it or you don't. How many players have been passed over in the past because they were too slow, not very skilled or small and turned out to be great leaders and stars. The reason they made the wrong choice is because they neglected or underestimated the kids heart.
14. Yes that would be helpful. I would like to know how teams try to gauge/project a 17/18 year old's character and heart in the future. I would think the good scouts and talent evaluators have a feel for this. You look at all the busts and all the steals in all the past drafts and it seems to all hinge on the players character and heart.
15. I would like to know, from the people who argue against Virtenan because of his low IQ, how many would trade Kassian for Hodgson today? Kassian is criticized for having a low IQ whereas Hodgson is admired for having a very high one. I think Kassian is doing fine with his hockey instincts. He is looking to be on the road of being that rare commodity that every team covets and so vital in the playoffs. Give me the prospect with the greater passion, drive and grit over a more skilled and faster one anyday. Just take a look at the team we played last night and their heart and soul guy who played his last game. My problem is, I am not sure which of the top prospects we will be picking from, has the most heart.
16. Having only looked at the prospect stats and Youtube highlights, I was hoping this thread would help me decide on who to pull for on draft day. Giving more weight to people who I think know what they are talking about, doesn't help. They all make good arguments but for different prospects. So my question is after the top 5 of Bennett, Ekblad, Reinhart, Draisaitl, and Del Colle, who would you slot in for number 6? I think the top 5 will be gone by our pick but we may get the sixth best prospect. My choice is Virtanen. Not because he is from B.C., but because he seems to have the intangibles of passion, grit, and drive which you need to excel in the NHL. I was really conflicted about going with Ritchie or Ehlers though. Besides, Virtanen is the sixth best rated North American skater.
17. Didn't know anything about Gaunce. Thanks everyone for the good info on our newest Canuck. From his description here he sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Finally, along with last years pick of Labate, we are stocking up with gritty, power forward prospects that can play at the center position.
18. I like how he goes to the net hard like a power forward.
19. Beat out Zack Kassian for Player of the Week honours. Well done.
20. "Update for Archi, he has been on fire recently." # Player Name P GP G A PTS +/- PIM 25 Darren Archibald (total) LW 61 41 25 66 +5 51 What happened to all his penalty minutes? Concentrating more on hockey and not getting into as many fights maybe? He use to average a penalty minute per minute played. Maybe Gillis had a talk with him ala Kesler and Burrows when he signed Archie.
21. Another point to make considering accumulating depth is conservation. When Gillis inherits or acquires talent he likes, he will not part with them. He has not traded away any young promising players or prospects. After the trade deadline, he stated that there were inquiries for Hogdson and Schneider, but that he does not like to trade talented young players. In the Ballard trade, he traded young players that were not in their plans to address an area of concern. The draft picks he has traded he got players back that are not even in their prime so are far from being rentals. So not only has Gillis acquired and drafted prospects, he has conserved them. Talented players saved is talented players earned.
22. ^^Interesting interpretation on the low penalty minutes for Tanev. You were certainly accurate there. His positional play and mobility has been very good. On the flip side, Tanev has shown no abrasiveness in his play for the Canucks. However he is mentally tough. He regularly takes a hit to make a good outlet pass. He is definitely a keeper. But back to Archibald. I really hope he makes the Canucks some day. His size, grit/abrasiveness, drive, and ability would be of great use to them. These qualities come to prominence in hard fought games such as the playoffs.
23.

Yeah that makes sense and I hope you are right. The first thing I do when the Canucks draft or sign an undrafted prospect is look at their penalty minutes. If they have around as many penalty minutes as games played then I feel we just got a gritty player and it makes me happy. Hockey is obviously a very tough, physical game and gritty players have an edge, if most other things are equal. That is what I am excited about young prospects like Archibald, Freisen, Connauton, Sauve, Adam Polasek, and even Sawyer Hannay. Not only do they show promise but they seem to be gritty.
