4-5 years for Motte? I can understand rewarding him for his good play, but handing out a 4-5 year contract to a 4th line winger is crazy. It's bad enough that they gave a 4th line centre a 4 year contract, and now you want to hand them out to a 4th line winger?

Without Markstrom, who are these other goalies in the system that you're referring too? It's debatable if Demko is ready to be a #1, Domingue is an average journeyman at best, and Dipietro isn't ready to even be a back up at the NHL level.

Pietrangelo is a top 5 defenseman in the NHL, so he's going to be paid like one = so I can't see him signing for less than 10 million a year minimum over at least 6 years. The fact that he's a UFA also helps his cause, because several teams will be wanting him and that will only drive up his price. You can try and front load his contract all you want, he's going to get his, and that's going to be 8 figures per year.....and the Canucks DON'T have the cap space for that. You brought up Edmonton and Toronto as examples of two teams that you want to avoid the Canucks being like, yet at the same time you want to sign Pietrangelo and despite the positions played, that would make them just like those two teams by having a small percentage of players taking up a large amount of the cap? Sorry, I still don't understand your contradiction. You keep saying "if" and "hopefully", but how about being realistic? The Canucks would somehow need to get rid of Sutter, Eriksson and at least one of either Beagle or Roussel to be able to afford Pietrangelo this year. And how many prospects and draft picks would they need to include in trades to get that done? I also don't agree with your comparables. Boeser isn't nearly as good or as important as either Hughes or Pettersson. And Mackinnon was considered an underachiever before he signed his latest contract, and he BLEW up after that. And because of that timing, that was the ONLY reason why McKinnon signed such a cheap contract. Hughes and Pettersson are not considered underachievers and it is obvious how important both are to the team. So because of that, the Canucks will not be getting the same advantage that Colorado had with McKinnon. In my opinion a better comparable, especially for Pettersson would be Rantanen. He's been a stud just like Pettersson has pretty much from the jump. And he's getting paid over 9 million per year, and he doesn't play the premium position that Pettersson plays. So I think around 8 million per is pretty realistic for him. Finding a comparable to Hughes is a little tougher. But the fact that he's better and more important than Boeser, tells me that he'll get paid more than him. The fact that he's twice the player that Myers is, tells me that he's going to and should get paid more than him. So just based on that I'm pretty sure that he's going to get at least 7 million per.

Ok, you said it yourself = a flat cap. So with that flat cap, how are you supposed to try and get a 10-12 million dollar a year player under that flat cap, when you still have to pay your two superstars and a #1 goalie? How is that possible? Every single guy you mentioned whose contract is up after next year, that money is going to go directly towards those 3 players. And now you want to add a 10-12 million dollar a year player on top of that? How? I'm not saying that you won't be able to get some cheap players, but they have to be effective cheap players, and like the saying goes (and more often than not it's true) "you get what you pay for". In my opinion, there's just waaaaaay too many holes and ifs in your scenario. IF we can get an Alex Edler for 2 million a year, IF Pettersson and Hughes will take a friendlier contract, IF you can find some cheap and effective middle class players who will accept being paid as lower class players, IF our potential prospects can prove that they're NHL ready, WHERE do you get and how do you pay for a #1 goalie, and If Demko is that guy, he has to be paid. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Pietrangelo here, but realistically it's not going to happen. I just don't see how you can get a 10-12 million dollar player, two 8-10 million dollar players, and at least 6 other guys making 5 million or more, and you still haven't even paid for a #1 goalie yet, which as we all know is THE most important position in hockey, and Markstrom proved that all year. The MAIN reason why the Canucks even made it to the bubble, won the play in series, and beat St. Louis in the first round was because of Markstrom. He was their MVP all year. I understand what you're trying to say about Benning pointing towards Edmonton and Toronto, but last time I looked neither were considered true Stanley Cup contenders and they both were better teams in the regular season than the Canucks were, so I don't really think they had a poor performance on the ice. But by you even bringing up Edmonton and Toronto and mentioning about having a handful of players taking up the majority of the cap, that's EXACTLY what you're proposing the Canucks do by trying to sign Pietrangelo. So you're totally contradicting yourself there. Because you say don't want to be like Edmonton and Toronto by using up the majority of the cap on a handful of players, yet that's EXACLTY what they'd be doing if they signed Peitrangelo.

Pettersson and Hughes will require new contracts next year, and don't forget Demko will too. Yes a few players contracts will be up, but you still have to replace them with other guys, and that puts a dent into the cap. All of those guys you mentioned, all of the cap space that frees up will be needed exclusively just for Pettersson, Hughes and Demko alone, not to mention the other roster spots that need to be filled. I'm not sure which players you're talking about who will resign here at a lower salary or will be on very friendly contracts? It's VERY rare when anyone does that, and usually the only reason they do, is because they're older and on the decline. And are those really guys that you want to keep around? With all of the 5-6 million dollar players that they already have signed past next year, and with Pettersson and Hughes likely to get 8-10 million each per year long term deals and needing to also pay a #1 goalie, how do they also afford a 10-12 million dollar a year guy on top of all of that?
-
Even if they let Tanev and Markstrom walk, how are they ever going to be able to afford Pietrangelo? He's probably going to get at least a 6 year contract at 10-12 million a year. And you still have to resign Pettersson and Hughes next year to their extensions. Sorry, even if Benning can get out of some of the long/bad contracts he's signed guys to, there's no way they can clear enough space to pay Pietrangelo. I just don't see that happening or even being possible.

I never said he was effective. Lol.....although he can be. I just said that he skates pretty well for a bottom 6 guy on this team, especially when you compare him to other bottom 6 guys like Sutter, Beagle and Eriksson. And you're right, it's all comparable, as on most teams he probably wouldn't be one of their better skaters. But on a team with the 3 slugs I just mentioned, how could he not look faster than what he probably is? I'm sure that his ACL recovery prevented him from being able to skate as well as he did/can. But he's also going to be 31 when next year starts, so it's not like he's going to be getting any faster than he was before the injury anyways. Personally I'd dump him in a trade as soon as I could, and not just for the cap relief that getting rid of him for a younger, more physical (and hopefully faster) guy could bring. I like the fact that he's a gritty in your face kind of guy, but he's too small to play the heavy hitting game that I think we could use, especially on a team that already lacks size.
-
I actually agree with you in that the team as a WHOLE, needs a lot more speed. But you first mentioned that Motte was the only good skater on the bottom 6, and I disagreed because Roussel is also a good skater, especially compared to the other guys in OUR bottom 6. You also have to remember that he's coming off a torn ACL, which usually takes at least a year before you come back to even close to where you were. And he looked much faster in the playoffs than what he did during the regular season when he was just coming back from his injury. But neither of them are very big, so they lack the impact larger players make when they have wheels. In my opinion it wasn't Roussel's skating that was keeping him from being effective though, it was his mouth. He tried to get Vegas off their game with his mind games, and ended up working in reverse. The team has to bigger AND faster throughout their lineup. And to be honest, I see some decent/good skaters in their top prospects, but I don't see very much size.....and the ELITE teams have many guys with a combination of one or the other and usually BOTH.
-
We weren't talking about his need. You were talking about speed in the bottom 6, but instead you just named a bunch of guys in Pearson/Toffoli/Boeser that aren't in the bottom 6? In any event, in our bottom 6, Roussel has good wheels, and for the most part will always get a piece of you. In the bottom 6 you need to use your speed to put pressure on the D and throw some hits and make the defense keep their head up (just like Motte does and periodically Virtanen too), and at least Roussel pretty consistently does that.

The only thing I got out, was the facts. But thanks for allowing me to do so.....pal.

Sutter isn't going to wear any one down, especially since he's already worn down himself and is as fragile as they come. He's a decent penalty killer and face off guy, and can be used as a shut down guy, but NOT a wear down guy. If you're going to wear a team down, then if Ferland isn't healthy enough, then Motte (and some others as well) would be a much better guy for that job than Sutter. Because Motte's got excellent speed and uses it to get in on the forecheck and gets a piece of you every time, and that's what wears down the opposition. Pulling your groin jumping over the boards and getting a sports hernia while stick checking someone isn't really going to wear down anyone on the other team.

I thought this was a Tryamkin thread? Yet somehow (like a lot of threads) they end being hijacked with talk of other players and other arguments. Pretty sure that if you want to talk about Roussel, that he has his own thread to discuss and argue it in.
-
Being sent down and being sat down, are two different things. In saying that, despite the teams better play this year, a lot of it was done without Benn or Schaller in the lineup anyways. Plus, this winning that you speak of that they've done together, only has them in the middle of a playoff battle. So it's not like you're talking about guys who've built up years of trust and loyalty by going through years of Stanley Cup winning battles with the team.

[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland
Drop Em replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
WTF? I come to read the Ferland thread, only to find out that there's pages and pages of comments that have NOTHING to do with Ferland. And most recently a Stetcher/Edler argument has broken out. Is it that hard to stay on topic, or take that topic to the appropriate thread? -
No he's not. He's playing 2 levels below the NHL against teenagers. HUGE difference between the WHL and the NHL, especially for defenseman.

I think the better question, instead of why not.....is why?

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
Drop Em replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I agree with most of what you said, however the guys that came out of the CHL are more than used to having their schedules concentrated with weekend games and they play about the same amount of games in total. The games themselves would be more physically challenging because of playing against bigger stronger men, more so than when they're playing them or how often. I can see first year guys coming out of college or out Europe having a problem with this though. -
I was at the game last night and he's a couple of levels above everyone else on the ice. He did get a little lucky too though, as he almost had an early end to his night when he tried to get a guy to fight in the second period and it would have been a secondary altercation. If the kid on the other team was smart, he would've dropped the gloves with him just to get him off the ice, especially because Byram had his goal and assist after that altercation. I like that he has a bit of attitude to his game, because his skill and vision are already off the charts. A lot can happen in the next few years, but I think the kids going to be a pretty special player in the NHL.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread
Drop Em replied to stonecoldstevebernier's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
This pick up should help the Comets if the Canucks don't call him up. The Comets need defensive help and Schenn's a big experienced guy, solid in his own end, who plays physical and although not the best of fighters, is always willing to stick up for a teammate. And all of those are attributes that the Comets seem to lack.....and the Canucks too if he gets called up. I like this trade and the extra draft pick is just a bonus. -
I agree with you in regards to the media guys. Most of the local idiots just go by what Button and McKenzie say and haven't actually watched any/most of these guys play more than once or twice. But it's not just their drafted prospects they have on their lists. They regularly have Dahlen on there and even though he's one of their better prospects, he was acquired via trade and not drafted by the Canucks. So if they're going to have guys who they traded for included, then why not have undrafted free agents on there, especially when that guy is knocking on the door of being called up? A prospect is a prospect......and they had Utunen on there the other day and he's a mediocre one at best, so why not have a guy who's close to making it on there? Oh well, that's the Province for ya.
-
Agreed about his lack of buzz. The Vancouver Province has a full two page weekly update on Canucks prospects, and I don't ever remember him being one of the half dozen guys they list out weekly and talk about. From what Johnson has said and from what I've read here and what I've seen, he should be one of the first call ups if injuries hit again.....and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do. I think he brings some elements to his game that the Canucks have lacked for years now.

In my opinion they'd be better off having each of them play with some sort of a veteran presence, to help them improve and learn the nuances of playing pro hockey. -

So they grossly overpaid in both term and money for a solid player, that everyone (except for you apparently) can agree has been a very big disappointment.....and based on his increasing age and decreasing foot speed, isn't going to get any better. I hope they don't sign too many more "solid" players like that, whoever is responsible for it.
