Agree on Marky, Tanev and Edler. All 3 should have been moved for anything. But I'm ok having held onto the Sedins. I know it set the team back, but they did earn the right to retire here. Also would have been impossible to trade them both to the same team, so no way was Benning going to be the GM that splits up the Sedins at the end of their career. Could you imagine the media headlines on that one!

I would have a hell of a lot less faith in management if they had signed Bo, to any contract, rather than trading him. Asset management is as much a part of hockey as Cap management. Bo was an asset at the peak of production that simply must be traded in order to move this team forward. This is a win for current management in my eyes

Almost always will management groups talk to a replacement, or potential replacements beforehand. The only difference in this situation, is that media trolls felt it was their civil duty to report on these rumored discussions, and then add in their personal opinion. Then continue to hound the canucks & Bruce throughout the whole process in order to keep the story relevant. Management could have handled things differently, but don't think for a second that media, both local and in toronto didnt play a significant role in making the situation way worse. When you see articles like "Ex player disagrees with handling of Bruce situation" Or "Canuck managements decision disgraceful" Are B.S. headlines made to immediately convince the reader to believe nothing but this fact. While I really do like Bruce, his treatment was only bad because no one in media had the balls to go against the grain of popular opinion, an opinion being shoved down our collective throats by the Elliot Friedmans of the world, and state that Bruce's systems were flawed from the start, and a change was not only needed but expected.

Ummm, this has already been happening with zero effect, Boes was moved onto Petey's line for a while, and he replaced Kuz on PP1 (Who was our top PP scorer!) and Boes's numbers did not go up. Garland was moved to play with Miller and Horvat and given PP2 time, and his numbers did not go up. Team has been trying to pump these guys up for a while. They just aren't good production players.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
JayDangles replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Schenn is the perfect fit for Boston right now. Plays a similar game to Chara. I know the rumour is that Canucks want a 2nd rounder for Schenn, but I don't think Bostons super late 2nd rounder will do it. Would love to see a Boeser + Schenn package to Boston. -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

Disagree. In reflecting back on the Bruce situation, I realised now how terrible the media were in making that whole situation worse. Media (Friedman) released info about Canucks linked to Tocchet, not the Canucks. Then media kept bringing up Tocchet, they also kept interviewing Bruce to illicit an emotional response, then cut to hockey analyst again talking about poor Bruce and Tocchet coming in . Then management feels the pressure but they aren't in a position to state Tocchet is coming due to contract issues. If media had left it alone instead of making it a headline for 2 weeks the situation would have been no different than any other coach firing. I'm not saying management is totally innocent, they could have handled it better and Bruce is/was a swell guy, But F. The media and how they make everyone else the bad guys and they are the heroes for bringing everyone the dirt. -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

Good call. I mean management can't always control everything, and sometimes deals come together fast and players get screwed over, but even if it happens and it's not managements fault, they will get raked through the proverbial media coals if they trade Schenn in the late stages of his wife's pregnancy. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Thatcher Demko

Don't forget the media are a bunch of trolls just waiting to expose some minor issue and blow it up, knowing that the local fans will grab their pitchforks and the toronto media can pile it on during HNIC. Just be the first troll to tweet it and then maybe Fridge will retweet it, and now there's a whole debacle going based on nothing. -
Yeah I'm hoping those people take the time to read other points in the post that support my argument in addition to the +/-, lol Honestly BB6 doesn't bring anything to the team that isn't replaceable for slightly less money, or replaceable for the same amount of money, but a new player could have some additional skills, like grit or penalty killing. The BB6 we drafted, and who won MVP at the skills comp is not the guy playing on the team currently. Likely his injuries, but this is a results based business.

It's because there are two ends of a hockey rink. An offensive and defensive side. Boeser does not play well in the defensive side. Guy has been a minus player his whole NHL career. Other teams are not blind to this. Sure if you put up 100 pts then who cares what you do on defense (McDavid, Miller (last year), Kane, Ovechnkin etc). But if you're a 60pt guy and consistently slow in the neutral zone, weak in the corners and somewhat of a liability in your own zone, zero physicality. Those 60pts aren't enough to overcome those issues. Great, he got 60pts, but how many goals did he cost the team when he is a minus player? I'm not saying he is trash, but GM's look at a lot more than just points. If you want to break down points further. Guy has a lot of 2nd assists, only 9 goals, only 3 on even strength. His stats do not scream goal scorer, or play driver. He screams fringe top 6 player, but a terrible fit for bottom 6. Just not what a lot of GM's are looking for close to the deadline. Sorry for anyone who loves BB, but he just isnt as good as people thought. Literally trending downwards in each of his last 6 years. GM's aren't blind to these things.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Thatcher Demko

Then we could ice the same lineup for years to come and somehow miraculously expect this team to produce better than we currently are? Honestly Bo leaving is a good thing for the future of this team. It's ok to part ways when things go stale. Which they absolutely are. -

Noletta Zeegolzin? Heard he's pretty good. -
I disagree. I believe the return also includes some level of confidence from NYIs that they can resign Bo. If Bo flat out said he wouldn't resign in NY I doubt we get Raty. Really all things considered you can pick apart all the different ways this trade missed the mark, but we don't really know the details and what was ever offered under what conditions. So purely speculation. Just looking at the trade itself for what it is, I feel it's a good return.

I think the Horvat trade answers your first comment. Obviously Horvat couldn't bring in a top 4 D or else it would have happened. Think about it.. if we were on the playoff bubble, would you trade Hughes for Patrick Kane? Hell no, not in a million years. Expiring UFAs do not bring in top players on contracts. In regards to scouting defence, this is always tricky. A large percentage of top 4 D were drafted after the 2nd round. This takes scouts with vision and a strong development program. Canucks have had bad luck drafting D men and worse luck keeping them healthy. My biggest concern right now is Allvins hard on for European prospects. Time will tell. All in all I am happy with the trade. There are also intangibles like shifting the team culture under Tocchet. Horvat will have resisted change and made things hard on other players. This is a fresh start that is long overdue.
-
The only thing I can think is there is a risk in allowing this for the Canucks. .say the isles talk to his agent and it's made apparent Bo will ONLY sign an 8 year deal and want $9m. That would immediately turn the Isles off of him. Yes negotiating a contract with a new team ahead can Garner a much bigger return, but it also runs the risk of scaring off potential trade partners also. It really only works if they player is being traded to a destination they want to go to. Example Matthew Tkatchuk to Florida
-
Yeah I think we have more options now than with Horvat. Teams often don't trade a forward for a defenseman. Very hard to pull that off. With 2 firsts we have options. Also adding a 2nd to Boes, or retaining salary can up his value. There are still ways to improve the D through trade and through UFA. We weren't going to turn the team around with just 1 trade.
-
You can only make those statements if you have a crystal ball and know what the market actually was for Horvat. My guess is there were only actually 3 teams in on Horvat. After the Isles made their best offer, Allvin checked in with the other 2 teams and both confirmed they would not match and didn't have an equal offer that included a D. If that's the case, what would you expect management to do? Do nothing and you run the risk of Horvat getting injured or the Isles pulling their offer after the rumour mill starts swirling again. The trade isn't bad all factors considered and taking your emotions out of it . Needed a centre prospect. Needed a first Needed a roster player Sure a D would have been nice, but CDC always overvalues our players. This is what an expiring UFA is worth in a cap strapped league Now they can look at Schenn, Boes, Garland , Demko(I hope not) to try and improve D
-
You always have to consider the unknown in these situations. Maybe there just wasn't any better offers from teams interested in Bo. Maybe there was an offer with a good D, but no pick. This could be a home run if you compared it to other terrible offers. Really glad they got what they did for an expiring UFA with only half a stellar year under his belt. Bo is good, but in reality this is a good return. Beggars can't be choosers!
