  1. top 6 picks don't crack an NHL roster after their draft year that often. after the 1st pick, the amount of times that happens falls off sharply. sure, the top picks go straight to the NHL more often than any other range of picks. It's hardly a regular occurance though. And in Jake's case, coming back in September is just too early even if he's healing quickly. injuring a surgically repaired shoulder before its had time to heal from said surgery would be hugely put him on the shelf even longer than the 6 month projection they put on him. On top of all that, his talent is still very raw. he still has plenty to learn from junior hockey.
  2. HA! If Jake becomes a Torres type, I hope this portion actually remains true for Jake unlike Raffe.
  3. I like that he seems focused on getting better. I think he'll use his time wisely in the KHL and be ready to make some noise when his time comes.
  4. perhaps there was a potential trading down scenario he wanted to be prepared for?
  5. But we know we have more centers than that though. last season: Hank Kes Santo Richardson Matthias Schroeder Dalpe This coming season so far: Hank Bonino Matthias Richardson Vey a tweener in Dustin Jeffrey plus hopefuls Horvat and Gaunce
  6. it was easy for a slightly more than casual fan (me) to guess the order of the first 5 picks; i highly doubt benning had to even think about it.
  7. that sounds like a pretty dumb rule.
  8. as much as many want it, that comparison will take decades to die.
  9. i was in the nylander camp but i've come around to virtanen. i'm hoping they go after first line potential in next years draft. its going to be a deep and talented draft.
  10. finally listened through the summer summit. 3 things stuck out to me. 1. trevor linden seems to have an awesome report with the prospects, coach, and managment team. genuine guy. 2. jared mccann had to have been extremely nervous on draft day cause the kid seems to have personality in spades. 3. i want to have a few beers with shorty.

i'm enjoying demko's blogs, especially the 3rd one...these guys are all going to grow up together...

Shorty was rolling punchlines all night. It was pretty epic.

ooh, another thing i liked was how loosely everyone played the whole event. as shorty mentioned (several times lol) free beer and wine probably helped but it was a lot more enjoyable than gillis' buttoned up, serious approach to public events like that.

  11. kind of a shame. mcnally is a guy that needs to be playing as much hockey as possible right now.
  12. But what would Radulov do in the AHL?
  13. I disagree with the Horvat points, but totally agree about sestito. I don't think Horvat was all that bad in the WJC. Team Canada largely unperformed across the board; I thought Horvat played his role well. I'll admit I wasn't impressed by his performance in the mem cup but London got pretty much steam rolled in each game. they didn't seem up to the challenge. As far as Sestito goes, he absolutely fills a role required to play in the west and in certain matchups out east. If an opposing teams heavy wants to go, he ALWAYS answers the bell. that's not just being a goon; that is team first character and that is hard to find. Also, knowing a big guy like Tom is in the lineup will make middlewights and down think twice about taking runs at star players. sure they may get away with a hit as soon as it happens; but when Sestito gets on the ice you know he's looking to even the score. knowing repercussions will come from dirty plays is crucial. there has to be SOME intimidation factor in the lineup outside of bieksa and kass.
  14. and he still looks skinny in his frame on the ice.
  15. reminds me of freak the mighty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL54-EZtv9Q#t=24
  16. they have the last two years for sure. hoping they will do that again.
  17. pretty positive it was just a slip of the tongue.
  18. you pointed this out yesterday i believe but i want to reiterate: there are such thing as minor injuries and surgeries. i think people hear the word surgery and assume the worst. a lot of these surgeries don't require much of an incision anymore. medicine has come a long way; i think a lot of people here would be surprised.
  19. I'm pretty sure 265 lbs isn't correct. That would be awesome though
  20. I'm excited for what we managed to come away with in the 1st round! can't wait to see virtanen healed up and playing again
  21. to me it just seems like a way to get ehlers name surrounded by other big names.
  22. Your post just points out the philosophical differences of this whole size/skill debate. Most peoe who lean towards drafting skill would tell you Ritchie was able to do what he did in junior just by virtue of being physically stronger and larger than the other players; something he will not be at the nhl level.
  23. among others. i would enjoy it thoroughly!
  24. we will need first line scoring sooner than later though. its high time for us to draft first line potential; while we still have a few years to develope that talent.
  25. you have to stop looking only at the numbers. watch the kid play. his skill is high end, undeniably so. look at what he can do, and realize what he could become! i personally find ehlers to be more flashy. nylander is very controlled and dynamic. you don't see many kids that are that comfortable with the puck and with that much speed. its a hell of a base to build off of. he just needs more experience! in a draft with not much in terms of a sure fire choice; it's 100% worth it to me to use our pick on his potential. Also, the whole meddling dad thing is overblown. having a dad who played in the NHL should be a positive. its always looked at positively in cole cassel's case. i truly believe if michael has been micro-managing william's career so far, it's all been to give his son the best shot at getting into the NHL. You can't argue that he's helped get william into a pretty good position currently.
