The media are generally wrong on a lot of things every year though. I have a theory that they are sometimes forced to provide an opinion even if they might not have one in certain situations. It's almost as much of a drama series as it is an information platform.
-
Kind of what I would expect. It's a busy week and might as well focus on that stuff when you have more time to attend to it I would imagine.
-
There are people comparing Myers and Guddy? I'm glad I don't have time to read everything because that sounds like a terrible lack of understanding of our situation. lol

Pretty much this. There are very few people I actually trust to give a fair analysis these days, and not all of them are media. To me, that kind of thing has to be earned. I think analytics complicates things more than it needs to be. I'm sure it's a useful tool and all but I have a hard time believing a random analyst using analytics knows more than a professional analytics department being employed by the very teams they are calling mutiny on half the time. Perhaps it's my own bias playing into my picture for them, but I kind of thinking of it as overthinking, and overthinking has a history of creating unrealistic opinions.

I tend to like to think of a defense as the sum of it's parts. Sure, there's pairings that work and pairings that don't, but there's only so much of Edler to go around to compliment the other players, so a player is best if he can work with multiple other players and not have to rely on one other player. Perhaps it's on us for not providing that other player or perhaps it's on Guddy for not being able to adapt. It can kind of be thought of as 2-fold really. Team chemistry: if only it were as easy as an EA game with cool graphics and numbers that show chemistry!

How do we know what they tried and didn't try though? I mean, we only know what they were successful at in terms of trades and sometimes we know a few things that could have happened but didn't. I tend to hate the word "should" because it implies something could have been done even though we don't really know if it could have been done. For example with Guddy, other defensemen would have been great to try out with Guddy; however, that's kind of hard to do if he's injured and not even in the lineup. Then there's the whole how do you acquire these defensemen? Then there's the whole how do you even know that would even work? Do we just have a continuous revolving door of defensemen for Guddy to speed date until he finds a taker?

[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks
The Lock replied to CanucksCountry's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Because Benn is better then Ben because of the extra n and Benning likes players that are closer to his name. -
That's fair then. I just have my opinions on the whole analytics thing evidently. I think I'd just read enough bad analytics articles to put a bad taste in my mouth.
-
Ah, so it's one of those analytics guys. That makes sense then. I just can't get into reading analytics since most of those kind of articles are used to bash players. I think they forget the entire point of analytics as a tool to help assist with WATCHING THE GAMES rather than being the sole focus and I find it really hard to take anyone who focuses entirely on analytics seriously.

Wow, it costs a subscription to read something anyone on this forum could have written? Capitalism: making people spend money out of boredom to insignificant media personnel who want to pretend they are significant. Maybe I should just start a random site of mumblings. lol

You mention that we have a bunch of "random players". How do you think identity is created exactly? By overpaying to get specific players in a cap era? I argue that we bring in these random players to DEVELOP our identity. Identity will never be defined before you build the team. Identity comes AFTER. If you are trying to create a team based off of identity, how do you not overpay for players at that point? How do you even get to that identity? It would probably be next to impossible. So I think what you are looking for in identity will come, but you can't expect that from a developing team and be realistic about it. It's just impractical at best in my opinion.

[Signing] Jordie Benn signs with Canucks

I have to agree with this. I really think we should be wishing him nothing but the best. Also the mentality here towards players like Hutton to me show we're not much different than markets like Toronto or Montreal in terms of fan mentality. -
Until they forget in a couple of years that it was a fair deal. It seems pretty typical for them to have a very short memory and are willing to bash at even the slightest mistake.

Well in that case, I'm the best player in the NHL and should be paid millions of dollars because I'm that good.

(That's about what I think our chances are on this actually happening. I'm beginning to think healthy's a swear word in the locker room) -
Random thought (and clearly I need to go to bed): If Bubble writes some long winded response to my not so serious post I'm going to be mildly disappointed.

[Signing] Canucks sign Oscar Fantenberg

I don't know. I think he could have taken at least a little more on the market, but it's something we'll never know for sure. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this seeing as we clearly don't even agree on his market value. -
Well I didn't mean literally, but thanks. lol

I hope you like sunny walks on the beach.... Because if you think I'm a homer, your opinion is about as fake as all the plastic you'll walk over.

If you want to be proven wrong you need to listen to people. That's generally the first step. EDIT: Misread the post and corrected myself.

You mean it's not 100%? Man.... what's it like to have a season without 3-4 defensemen injured at the same time? -

As much as I respect you trying to project the cost, I think your projection might have been a little low given he didn't take Montreal's offer of the same amount. Also, why argue over whether or not it was a hometown discount? We got him for what Montreal offered. I call that a hometown discount and I really don't care what anyone else thinks about that. lol -

Well, from what I gather, he wanted to see what others options there would be. So this could mean he might have either been hoping we'd come calling or hoping for a little more money. We basically got Montreal's discount. lol -

I just don't think we could afford it long term when we have to sign Pettersson, Hughes, and acquire whomever else we may need.
