We even got him at a hometown discount. It really showed in his interview that he really wanted to come here even before FA. lol -

That contract Jamie has though.... -
Bubble Man's clearly a troll poster guys. Stop feeding him. There's criticism and then there's the obvious bashing of the team to rile a few feathers. He's the later.
-
Is he trying to be Kesler? Like what's up with that picture? lol

Except we have no Spooner to get that relish out. Might have to Leivo it out. (Also, I'm disappointed you didn't say MyGaud...)

Jordie's probably doing a happy dance right now. lol -
There's something weird about a clown avatar saying this. Thanks for scarring my brain.

[Signing] Oilers sign Markus Granlund
The Lock replied to qwijibo's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Would make sense. He'd likely be unprotected come expansion draft. lol Then he could say he was traded by one, signed by another, and then claimed by the 3rd. -
I kind of disagree with this. There was no Panarin in Eriksson's UFA class, but I do see what you mean in that it could raise Eriksson's value. Actually, I could argue that Myers is the best defenseman in this draft class which is why he was tagged as potentially making 7 or 8 mil per season.

He must really like the northwest: Calgary to Vancouver to Edmonton. -

Talking about eating your words. lol This is why I try not to post anything like this at the beginning of rumours pages. -
I think it's a decent contract given it's from free agency. It's certainly a much better deal than when we signed Eriksson and for much better reasons.
-
Toronto had better be getting some grit in return, or else they might as well be skating ballerinas on ice just asking to get injured. lol

I'd have no issues with Benn. If his brother wasn't on such a big contract I'd joke about it being to entice his brother to come over. lol -
It doesn't propel him to 1st line, but it can generate demand for the player in a trade or add to his value on the team. I would argue that pay is actually about supply and demand. It's the entire reason why the top point scorers are paid more: they are in higher demand. In a similar sense, the players who don't score as much, but still are high end with their intangible (ie. Stone) are still paid a lot because of that demand. Pay is what a player is worth, but that worth is based on that player's role on the team. Perhaps we are sort of agreeing on things in terms of worth, but think about how that worth is actually generated. Points are obviously big, but so are those intangibles.

I disagree completely with the bolded above and hear me out on this.... Let me ask you this: why do you buy things? Is it because you are lacking that object and want it or because it has a value? Everything has a value but I doubt you want to go out and buy bras for yourself if you're a guy (unless if you're into that thing, I won't judge) even though those bras have value. Similar idea with players: there is their production overall, which could be thought of as the features of the product. There is the intangibles which could be thought of as how well is the product build and what role that product's going to play. Therefore, if you just base it off of productivity alone, you are ignoring the entire point of why you are getting the player in the first place. So the entire point of getting players is to make your team better. If you just base it on production, then you are looking at a team with little to no intangibles. They have productivity but no one to protect them or do other things stats are likely to forget entirely about. Therefore, it's better to have a few players for productivity but also value players based on what roles they can play.

Personally, I think the whole mauling over who's 1st line and 2nd line is silly; however, I will say that one thing that's worked well for 1st lines around the league in the past is having that player who can get into the corners and get the puck for his linemates. Patrick Eaves was a good example of this when he was in Anaheim playing with Getzlaf and Perry and it was pretty evident how effective having that guy who can do a lot of the dirty work for your top scorers can be. I picture Miller as that guy. If you just look at points and stats then I would agree with you in that he would be classed as a 2nd liner; however, the makeup of a team can be just as important and I wouldn't be surprised if it he that 1st line player that we need to do the dirty work for Pettersson and Boeser that we kind of lacked last year.

Style of play really was how Bonino wasn't cutting it. After Kesler left we didn't have a lot of grit and I think that played a role in the change. Bonino did play well for us, but he wasn't the greatest fit in the lineup. He could pass but he was passing to players who were used to driving the next; thus, the change. At least that's how I saw it at the time. Hindsight though, I think we were in the process of losing our identity from our aging team and it really wouldn't have mattered who was centering at that point.
-
The thing is, if you talk about potential in Burakovsky I don't see how it makes sense to ignore why we got players like Eriksson and Sutter in the first place. They were brought in for similar reasons: they had potential to help us in our top 6. Eriksson had played well with the Sedins. Sutter came in after Kesler left and Bonino wasn't cutting it. They are bottom 6 now in terms of their positions on the team and I've always disliked the Eriksson contract, but please don't talk about potential in a player on another team and bring up something that really has nothing to do with it in the grand scheme of things.

[Discussion] Aqualini and Benning Missing the mark
The Lock replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Even if we overpay a bit, it's not the end of the world. The fact that people are complaining about fair value to me tells me we've been spoiled that we aren't at least getting fleeced by teams. lol But people who like to complain seem to expect perfection and if they find even the slightest bit of lack of perfection among the cracks of everything else they'll complain about it until they turn blue in the face, no matter how insignificant it may be. lol
