[Rumour] Canucks aggressively pursuing Tyson Barrie
The Lock replied to 3rdGenCanuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
How is this overlooking? I've literally acknowledged that it is still a stat and it does still mean things. But using it as the end all? I think I'd rather hear Donald Trump giving an analysis of Risto at that point and would probably trust it more. lol -

I can't believe there are people that would sum up a player's game just based on +/- alone. Have we really become that inept and lazy at actually seeing whether a player's good or not? -
Dynasty incoming....

The Edler signing shows fans don’t “have it out” for JB
The Lock replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Canucks Talk
And yet, no one talks about Horvat's good contract or Hutton's good contract, or other players' good contracts that we actually have. I get that there are a couple to a few (depending on what you consider bad) contracts that aren't the greatest, but give me a team that doesn't have at least 1 head scratcher of a contract. It just doesn't exist. -

I'm not saying it's only that. Like I said, I'm not saying he's not at least a part of that +/-. That being said, Buffalo has been out of the playoffs for more than 8 years so there actually is that trend to potentially stretch across 8 years. -

No matter what I say? So you don't want to consider Buffalo not exactly having a good team for a while? I'm not saying -41 isn't bad by the way, but when you have such a stat on a bad team, a player generally looks worse than they actually are. But hey, if you want to go with some mantra about -41 and ignore everything else... let's just say I'm glad I'm not putting any faith in your analysis. lol -

But according to your +/- Pouliot is better than Barrie. I'm just saying don't use +/- as a way to prove something when there are too many factors that play into that state beyond a single player. It's single-handedly the worst stat you could use to prove something in hockey with. -
[Rumour] Jesse Puljujarvi requests trade
The Lock replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Poolparty strikes me as being worse for us than Goldie and with a worse attitude as evidenced by his threat of going to Europe. Unless if Edmonton's practically giving him to us, I really hope we don't go out of our way to get him. And to anyone suggesting we trade Virtanen for him.... no, just no.... lol -

Does this also mean you want Pouliot back? He had a -1 plus/minus last year. -
If you worry about things outside of your control, you'll just be creating your own ulcers. You won't be doing anyone favours and you certainly won't be helping yourself.

Canucks should go slow on the trade front (discussion)
The Lock replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I don't know if it's really a hard and fast rule. I mean think about if you are selling an item on craigslist or kijiji and someone comes over to check it out. You are the one selling that item, and maybe it takes up a lot of space and it's clear you want it gone. However, if you have someone else calling about the item as the guy comes over, you know that, even if this person's not going to severely undercut you, you can probably still sell the item to the next guy. In this case, both people would have the "cap space" to buy your item, but there's not enough desperation to need to be give into their demands. You are the one then in control, even though you are not the one with the money. Basically, what I'm trying to say is there's all kinds of situations that can take place and the negotiating power is going to depend on that scenario as opposed to who has money. Money will be a factor of course, but if there's a demand for something, that's probably going to drive things more. -

It might be more of a tough sell than Braun, but I don't see Toronto giving up a pick being realistic at all either. I understand the rival mentality though. I don't like Toronto myself, but I don't think that same mentality tends to also be with the GM's. -

Yeah, I definitely don't have quite that extent of paranoia. There are fans from literally all 31 teams who claim rigging goes on that goes against their own team and I just don't care to be a part of that mindset. lol The only thing in my mind going against what I said earlier is the cap being potentially less than what was expected, but the Braun trade really shows that there are teams willing to take cap hits that also want defenders despite the cap. -

Except Braun was a cap dump by San Jose and STILL picked up 2 draft picks. He has a cap of almost 4mil. Zaitsev is a lot younger than Braun. Maybe not as good now but he could be, which is one of his selling points. Don't be surprised if Zaitsev gets similar value as he's only 700k higher than Braun in terms of cap. That's at least my prediction on it anyway. As far as Mareau goes though, I guess that depends on the market for a vet. Not to mention, Marleau seems to have specific teams he wants to go to. -
[Rumour] Canucks inquired about Sabres defenceman
The Lock replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The problem with this line of thinking is if you did the exact same thing with pick 14, for example, you get players like Grabner, Shattenkirk, Kulikov, Baertschi, McAvoy etc. 10's just been unlucky. I mean you can even look at 2003 and see Andrei Kostitsyn as opposed to most of the other 1st round picks of that entire draft class. but considering how successful later picks have been, I don't think a single pick being "unlucky" is what GM's are going to look at when appraising value. -

If Edler is leaving, we're going to need Tanev more than ever. That being said, I also have a hard time seeing Toronto giving a pick along with a player like Zaitsev and not getting anything in return, which I've seen a lot of trade on on this forum. I think with 29 other teams in this league and a defense free agent pool that's starting to look more shallow than my nephew's inflatable pool, there might actually be competition for Zaitsev. This is of course speculation, but there are a number of teams looking to bolster their blueline so we're going to have some competition. -
It's fine and all to want to try and find players that fit with a player, but sometimes a player just doesn't fit into a system. Case in point: Loui Eriksson. We've tried him everywhere: with the Sedins, with Horvat, up and down the lineup. He just doesn't fit. He's also highly demotivated as evidenced by his interview. Providing the right kind of players is not going to just magically fix that. I get what you are saying with Turris and him being a goal scorer and I agree on that part despite his recent lack of production, but I just don't think he's a fit in Nashville, although I will say he might come cheap at this point....

It looks great. Although I will mention we don't quite know 100% if he is gone. We'll know for certain come July or sooner if something official gets mentioned somewhere. Most likely the case though. I like the picture though for sure.

It's not grasping at straws if you can't explain why Gordon is a comparable. What does Gordon actually bring in terms of leadership? I know there's an article and all but McTavish and Eakins are going to say anything to back up their idea, no matter how small of an improvement it may have been. Adding in Gordon is tiny compared to what they should have been doing in the first place. It's why they aren't in their positions anymore. They should have done more than just Gordon, far more. But, if you think it's "grasping at straws", please explain why, otherwise I'll agree with you on the last couple of paragraphs. Let's agree to disagree as we could likely discuss this until we're blue in the face.

If Boyd Gordon is the one to be put in the leadership role, he hasn't exactly won a cup so I don't really see how he's comparable to Beagle. No disrespect to Gordon or anything, but signing one guy, just one guy for leadership, and saying what the media wants to hear doesn't really work. Imagine if Horvat didn't have the Sedins, or Burrows, or Edler, or anyone else to help him out. Let's just say he had Gordon.... what would you prefer? Think about that. And if you just look at the money and look at that as "blocking", the only way it blocks anything is if our younger players can't get into the lineup at all. In fact, conversely, if they are "blocking" they are also moving us forward in that we have a better team now for the young players that are already on the team. Imagine if we had no "fight" at all, yet we are turning heads all the same despite the standings. So if we're blocking, we're blocking with styrofoam and not a brick wall in my opinion. Money's only one aspect of it. In fact, let me give you an economic example in how we aren't blocking: when you have money, you invest in things you normally can't do when you're up against the cap. Does it mean the contracts are harder to move? Sure. Does it also help in the long run after those contracts are finished and it has affected the other players positively for having that player? Also true. Efficiency isn't everything.

With Beagle, here's the way I see it: He's playing more of a leadership role. He won the cup the year before signing here (thus the overpayment) so he can help mentor our younger players in what they need to do to be successful. This is something that teams such as Edmonton don't do; otherwise, they might be in a better situation than they have been. I actually have liked the Beagle signing and the main drawback in it is Beagle being injured at the start of the season, which could have ultimately affected people's perception afterwards. Is he really "blocking" Gaudette? I don't think so because Gaudette needs to earn his spot still and other centers such as Sutter and Granlund can be expendable. We also tend to have an injury curse so there's also that factor as well. Until Gaudette's ready, we need players who can fill those spots and just throwing Gaudette into that spot without considering development could do more harm than good.

Eriksson was a bad deal and I've openly said that in the past. Probably Benning's worst deal really. Outside of Eriksson, what impact do these deals have in the long run? Do we need the cap space right now or even in a couple of years? Money's not really our concern at the moment if you think about it. That being said, I do hope Benning doesn't overpay for a defenseman in the off-season and I do understand that concern.
