  1. Season 4 House of Cards: 4/10 Feel like the show was too heavily influenced by Breaking Bad et al.'s emphasis on the anti-hero or the protagonist that slowly transforms into the antagonist. In House of Cards, you ultimately don't like anyone, don't root for anyone, and thus consequences to the characters carry no emotional impact. Robin Wright seemed responsible for directing a large number of the episodes. I feel like her directing episodes is analogous to her character demanding things that she has not experience in and has yet to earn.
  2. I just don't think that Diaz has the discipline to keep things on the ground versus Connor. Connor will rile him up either before or even during the fight, Diaz will become over-aggressive and Connor will catch him.
  3. Zach Parise wastes more energy than any star in the league.

  4. So I just checked out the Oscar winners, and I cannot believe Sam Smith won for his theme song to Spectre. I almost turned Spectre off before the movie even started thanks to his whiny tripe. That said, if I followed my instinct, he would have been doing me a favor, as that movie was a complete waste of time. Coherence: 9.25/10 Watched it again, still one of my favourite suspense movies of all time. The Night Manager (TV Show): Hasn't aired in North America yet, but its produced by both AMC an BBC 1, and the BBC has already started airing this John Le Carre-inspired show. Watched the first episode last night and it is phenomenal. In British tradition, it is a six part mini-series, so don't get too attached.
  5. What I learned most about today is that Hamhuis is a really good person.

none of this potential trade talk was his idea, he submitted the list  he went along with the process, even after stating his desire to stay. he deserve's some respect for that alone. you can form a list much longer for the other reasons to keep him ,than you can for getting rid of him, measuring him against the other dmen in this organization.

  6. I took the 'under' on the number of trades that would go down today (19.5). I think my bet is safe.

Is that total transaction? Or total pieces moved?

      total transactions.

  7. This is why I have never liked Silva. Bisping won the fight simply because Silva wanted to win the fight without looking like he was trying to win the fight. Guy might be the most skilled mixed martial artist of all time, but I have just never liked him.
  8. I'm not sure if I picked the best time to wade into the stock market, but oh well. I didn't invest much, just wanted to start getting a feel for things now. The tough part is investing in US stocks when CDN $ is so low... even when stock price increases, if it doesn't match the rise in the CDN $, then its not a profit.
  9. I know offer sheets are kind of taboo, but with all of Anaheim's RFAs, I would drool over Sami Vatanen.

When has a team had to sign four key RFAs in the same year? You can't rely on trends with the context is different.

As much as I would want Vatanen, we could potentially be in contention to get the first overall next year as well. I wouldn't want to risk giving Anaheim a top 5 pick.

  10. As per Botchford, Benning is completely unwilling to trade veterans for draft picks. He wants player for player trades. I don't see elite teams giving up valued prospects for the Canucks' UFAs.

  11. Anyone know if you are able to get archived playoff games on CDC? I'm pretty sure in the opening to round 1 against the Flames it was mentioned that the Sedins thought Granlund was a phenomenal player.

Hmm, my best guess is that as CDC doesn't own the rights to games, no. Gamecenter is possibly the only legal way to view full archived games.

  12. Early word on Radim Vrbata -- injured last night vs COL -- is positive. Not believed to be a serious injury.

    Thank god.

  13. Not a big fan of trading Hansen, but looking at the Penguins third/fourth line and boy do they need help.

As Ghost said we need help too. Hansen is just to valuable and the fact that we've seen him develop into what he is today, puts an emotional attachment.

Plus screw Pittsburgh. They didn't deserve to win against us.

We need help, but guys like Hansen are replaceable. Guys like Grenier, Gaunce, Friesen each have the ability to replace Hansen. If the Canucks can get a skilled defensive prospect or 1st round pick, they have to pull the trigger IMO.

Hansen is a unique player Gaunce and those other guys cannot replace what Hansen brings. He can play with anyone it's ridiculous how much chemistry he has with each guy on the team.

However, if a team offers a 1st and we take it. It'll hurt me incredibly but I think I'll survive.

  14. Gaunce is centering a link with Shink and Grenier tonight.
  15. Can't see the Canucks sliding any lower in the standings. The other teams are just too bad.

i can see us falling as low as 4th that being said montreal is plummeting. they could steal that away from us.

I could see Calgary and Columbus both passing us, Winnipeg is a possibility too. None of those rosters are as bad as their position would say.

  17. Abdelkader also left early. Guys can't spend the summer training 10 hours a day. There is room for both school and work.
  18. Thank you for putting it this way. I probably spent 5 minutes trying to talk about how I felt about the use of tracking shots and it kept coming out like jumbled garbage. I'll try again You know how a child will try and get away with something, but a parent will spot them and tell them to stop, but as soon as the parent turns their back, the child tries to get away with the act once again? That's how I felt about the tracking shots. None of them were impressive. It was like Scorsese started a long tracking shot, some EP or co-director caught him, stepped in, and told him to stop the shot because it was too cliche. Scorsese goes back to shooting normally, notices someone's back turned, wash, rinse, repeat. None of the tracking shots were particularly gratifying. Tracking shot-ous interruptous.
  19. Scorsese has disappointed me for about 10 years now. The only thing I can recall liking over that time has been The Departed, and that wasn't even really his movie. Watching Vinyl now. Opening walk into that venue was annoying. Too many tracking shots. Also, slow motion and voiceovers, yuck. Robert Plant also seemed to be over-acted.
  20. If you read the whole article, even if the sexual assault was never proven in court, everything surrounding the case makes the Manning family out to be a bunch of racist/sexist a-holes. Manning deserves to be raked through the coals, but he's the face of companies worth billions of dollars and so privately-owned news outlets will never risk upsetting their clients.
  21. The Lobster 8/10 Really liked the concept, but found that every character was too similar to one another. The director seemed too influenced by Wes Anderson movies. For example, in Moonrise Kingdom the two main kids are kinds of socially odd/speak in blunt sentence fragments, but the people around them don't behave the same way. It's people's reactions to these kids' differences that make for an interesting movie. Lanthimos seemed to just want everyone to be odd. I don't buy the excuse that they're single at 40+ years old, and therefore have to all be odd. Some were simply divorced/widowed/widowers. All in all, still a movie that will capture your attention throughout, which is rarely true of a comedy.
  22. Secret in their Eyes: 7/10 I haven't seen the original, so my rating is likely higher than what it should be. Nicole Kidman.... wow. Because the movie is based off of another movie based off of a book, it seems that parts of the movie only made sense in the book, where more details existed. Character backgrounds, feuds, etc., were under-explored. The movie also provides flashbacks to scenes that are supposed to make you go 'oh, I didn't get that before'. However, the present was so transparent that you'd figured things out before the flashbacks even happened.
  23. The only 2015 comedy that I'd recommend would be Inside Out. Pitch Perfect 2, Trainwreck, Get Hard, Ted 2, and Minions were awful.
