  1. At first I thought that it was utterly ridiculous that the Jays would squabble over what amounts to less than 4% different in salary. However, it might be some requirement of the Jays to issue a counter offer, so they counter with something that is so close to the original value that it is clear they acknowledge what he's truly worth.
  2. Me neither, that's why there is so little concordance between my 'favorites' and who I think will win.

No problem if they've payed their bills. Tired of southern, fringe-franchises developing a roster of talented youth, for empty bldgs. We know who subsidizes this pyramid-scheme.

  7. Looking forward to see the combination of Virt and Etem on the forecheck. Virt in first to knock pucks loose, Etem to scoop them up.
  8. If 4-4 OT existed, the Canucks would probably have a .500 record in OT/SO. That would give them an extra 4-5 wins, or a record of 20-16-5. This team isn't that bad.

This just sounds like an excuse for poor play/injuries. - Sorry bud. :P

  9. Why does the CBC website go out of its way to make the HNIC so difficult to find?

  10. I thought Iain MacIntyre only looked like an idiot on television. Turns out he sounds like one too.

  11. Can start with Palme d'Or winners: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palme_d%27Or Canadian Denis Villeneuve, before he started directing blockbusters, has a solid list of Canadian-based films.
  12. Sicario: 8/10 It probably deserves a higher rating, but I tend to treat minor things more harshly when it comes to movies that I'd been excited for. I thought the score/sound editing really distracted from the tense points in the movie. Sometimes silence is the best way to bring about tension. Great acting by Blunt and Del Toro. Benecio appears to be impervious to aging.
  13. Mods should pre-emptively shut down the Virtanen thread.

Nothing good will come from any discussion of today's game. People will pile on Virtanen, and rightfully so, but what's the point?

I tend to agree and will take this point into consideration (for sure).  If it turns into a mud sling, a time out will be called.  Wish the team had done that when needed.

to a point i agree. however, there is plenty to talk about... like our goalie rebound control hicks penalty on top of jake... marners two power play goal performance..lots to discuss.

  14. The Big Short seems like this decades "The Insider", except I hope The Big Short doesn't go 0-7 at the Oscars.
  15. Disclaimer: The rating I gave a film may differ from the rating I gave on CDC of the same film. Movies in red font are movies I watched and rated. Movies in black font are movies I am still waiting to see or need to re-watch. Some movies were not released in 2015, they simply were movies I wanted to watch this year. According to my list below, so far, my top 5 movies of 2015 would be: The Big Short End of the Tour Mad Max Love & Mercy Ex Machina Still need to see or re-watch before I consider my list complete: Carol The Danish Girl Spotlight Trumbo Sicario Movies to watch in 2015 A most Violent Year: 8/10 Black Mass: 7/10 Bridge of Spies: 8/10 Burnt: 7.5/10 Carol Coherence Creed: 4/10 Dark Places Defiance Drinking Buddies Ex Machina: 8.25/10 Filth Fruitvale Station Inglorious Basterds: 8.5/10 Inherent Vice Ironman: 7.5/10 It Follows J Edgar Knight of Cups Legend: Re-watch Love & Mercy: 8.75/10 Mad Max: 9/10 Man of Steel: 7/10 Out of the Furnace Room: 6.5/10 Self/less: 5/10 Short Term 12 Sicario Silver Linings Playbook: 8.5/10 Southpaw: 3/10 Spectre: 5/10 Spotlight: Re-watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens: 8.25/10 Steve Jobs: 7.5/10 Take Shelter Taxi Driver The Big Short: 9.5/10 The Danish Girl The End of the Tour: 9.5/10 The Gift: 6.25/10 The Graduate The Hateful Eight: 4/10 The Immigrant The Last Walz The Man from UNCLE The Martian: 8/10 The Raid 2 The Revenant: 7.25/10 The Way Back There will be Blood Tree of Life True Story: Re-watch Trumbo Woman in Gold Zero Dark Thirty Concussion Joy: 7/10 The Walk: 6.25/10 Everest: 6/10 Pawn Sacrifice Victor Frankenstein No Escape: 5/10 Mission Impossible Minions: 4.5/10 Pitch Perfect 2: 3.5/10
  16. JV has really disappointed me this tournament. That said, there were moments where he showed the player he could be. I think he needs stability above all else. He's played very very little hockey with the same linemates/same system in the last 3 years. That's a long time during a critical developmental period. Send him back to Calgary (I'm one of the first to admit I don't like their structure), let him have a consistent voice/consistent linemates, and then send him to Utica Fall 2016. Hopefully Green will be re-signed and Virtanen can have some stability. It is easy to call out his IQ, but at the same time, it is a lot easier to be in the right position when you have a clarified role. JV needs to have been given a PROPER chance before he is written off.
  17. Sounds like Tarantino. Lucas' original trilogy was highly influenced by Joseph Campbell and his story archetypes. The idea that Lucas is a great storyteller is, IMO, inaccurate. Imaginative and creative but his story telling never struck me as impressive when you consider how much help he had. Lucas tried to do the second trilogy all on his own and faltered terribly.
  18. Can't remember if I reviewed Joy or not. Anyway, the interactions between Lawrence, Cooper, and Deniro felt too much like they were trying to bring back the banter from Silver Linings Playbook. Worth a one-time watch. Room: 6.5/10. My girlfriend read the book and wanted to turn the movie off. Emotion just fell flat, but I did like that the emphasis of the story was on life after escape.
  19. Playing a woman is the new playing an extremely skinny person.
  20. The Big Short: 9.5/10 Loved just about every part of this movie featuring a star-studded cast. Appreciated the attempts to explain complex financial terms/concepts. I hated Wolf of Wall Street for their condescension towards the viewer through their opinion that we wouldn't care about how fraud was conducted. The Big Short was the antithesis of Scorsese's laziness. This movie will likely sit #1 on my top 5 of 2015.
  21. Steve Jobs: 7.5/10 Great acting, maybe better than in Spotlight (see below), but I was always left wanting more. I liked that Boyle wanted to bring something unique to the telling of the story, but I think the movie became more about the whirlwind of activity during an opening than about Steve Jobs. I don't believe that those three moments could accurately capture his life. Not being able to do this isn't necessarily a problem, but it is when your title makes it sound like a biopic. Spotlight: unranked Have to re-watch as I fell asleep. Have to stop watching dialogue driven movies after long work days, I fall asleep every time. Legend: 6/10 Not Tom Hardy's best work, and really not a very good film. Hardy is coming dangerously close to reprising/amalgamating previous roles in this film. In fact, he steals a line from his character in Peaky Blinders ("Let him in, he's only little"). What I really liked was the number of forehead wrinkles in Reg, but not with Ron.
  22. JV pissed at Marner, he wanted to go end-to-end there.
