MP Chandra Arya wants to tax Canadians abroad!
Down by the River replied to canuckster19's topic in Off-Topic General
If you want a less emotionally-laden read than the OP or their link, you can read from the source: https://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/april-2020/canada-needs-to-start-taxing-canadians-who-live-abroad/ Here's the thing about rights... you don't have to pay for them. The minute you do and they cease to be rights. I don't really agree with his premise. What I begin to agree with is the taxation of people that are rich enough to be able to create a fake residence abroad so that they can hide their money while still benefiting from living in Canada and reaping the benefits of being Canadian. -
Gaethje has fought 7 times in the UFC. He has won 9 bonuses.
-
That was beautiful by Gaethje. Never allowed Ferguson to get in a rhythm. Beat the hell out of him in a controlled, dominant fashion. I don't think Gaethje has ever fought this way in his life. Loved watching that. Credit to Gaethje's team.

In Ngannou's last 8 wins, he has averaged 71 seconds in the octagon. 41 seconds in his last 4 wins.
-
Good for Cejudo. Can't stand the persona he puts on, but hard to argue that he isn't the greatest combat athlete of all time. I thought the stoppage was probably early, but I wasn't that impressed with Cruz up until that point either. Cejudo can say that he beat the greatest 125er and greatest 135er. He has a gold medal. And he's getting out of the sport in (apparently) good health.

Pretty sure Stephens just lost that extra 4.5 lbs.
-
Ceronne definitely looking like he's another victim of the COVID haircut.

Feels like this headline belongs in Florida:
-
Wish it poured rain today so I didn't feel guilty about being inside. Ferguson Cejudo Pettis Ngannou Stephens Hardy Oleinik Esparza Price (50/50) Mitchell Spann

And then: Putting hockey players in front of a mic and then thinking that they are definitely going to have anything valuable to say will always be a game of Russian Roulette. Brett Hull's comments that he didn't like hockey, he was just good at it, seem to have some truth to him. He doesn't like hockey, he likes the lifestyle that comes with being rich. He's upset here because now you can get caught. He liked things before when nothing could be proven. I'd argue that the Hull family might be worse than the Leipsic family. Either way, I'm not shocked. I'm not offended. Just stop thinking that hockey players are a bunch of good old Canadian kids and you'll stop being disappointed in a given player's behavior.

Vincente Luque vs. Nico Price might be the lowkey best fight on the card.
-
Stephens missed weight by like 4.5 lbs but the fight will still continue. 30% of purse forfeited. I wish it was more. Or, I wish that for the guy that made weight (Kattar in this case) a loss would count as a no contest.
-
That is about to a tee how I see each fight going as well. I could see Gaethje surprising... but don't see Cruz getting off the couch to beat Cejudo. Not because of ring rust, but because of aging. I thought Vegas would have Cejudo as a bigger favorite.

The privacy thing is really important. I just care less in this case because it seemed like a group of 3-4 people whose sole purpose was to talk $&!# about others. It wasn't a case of an otherwise okay person saying something in the heat of the moment and then got dragged over the coals for it. I guess the lesson is that if you want to have a private conversation, have a private conversation. Nobody is compelled to talk to someone through instant messaging.

Who are you hanging around with that seems to thrive off of pulling up photos of someone else with their child and using it as an opportunity to call someone's wife fat? Who are these 'real people'? I've definitely said things about other people that I wouldn't want leaked. But, #1 I didn't stoop that low and #2 I say those things to people I trust and don't have to worry about getting screwed over. I just can't imagine even bothering to take the time to search Twitter for photos of other people to then slag on them in a group chat. On top of everything, it just seems like a total waste of time and energy.

Lol. A Canuck game is 2.5 hours every second day and you can choose not to watch it. If there were games in July, sometimes I'd watch them and sometimes I wouldn't. But I wouldn't cry about the fact that a game was on. I would love for hockey to be on in July so that I can at least have the option to watch a game or not. The last line of your post makes zero sense. I don't really think that my life revolves around hockey. By definition, that makes me less of a fan than others.

It is literally always done this way. You probably just don't notice it because over the course of a full season the outliers won't have as strong an impact. I followed him all year as part of keeping track of prospects in the prospects thread. He had one game. 7 minutes. 3 goals. Stopped 3 of 6 shots. If you want an example of it you just need to find a box score of a game where a goalie was pulled. Their TOI might be 58:23 instead of 60:00 and accordingly you will see a wacky GAA.
-
The reason is that those are literally his stats. He was backup to Jeremy Swayman and literally played 7 minutes all of last year. Swayman signed with the Bruins. At least for next year, if he lasts in net a single period, he'll nearly triple his total playing time of the 2019-2020 season.

You're not, because what about 'other firearms'? Also what about rifles and shotguns that were registered as such but then adapted to be sawed-off? Again not saying that this means that bans will be useful... just to me there are problems with the data. The numbers you present are hypothetical... not really actual data on what the estimated number of prevented/solved homicides would be. To me, if they were going to create the ban, it should be implemented in certain select cities (e.g., Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton) and then compared against other select cities (e.g., Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal) where the ban is not implemented. Might be one way towards actually getting an understanding of the magnitude of the problem. The other 'problem' is that there are so few gun-related homicides in Canada to begin with. Describing changes in the percent of homicides that are reduced/increased can be misleading because Vancouver could experience a 25% increase in gun-related homicide and then when you look at the numbers it was only an additional 5 cases and things regress to the mean the very next year.

I don't know. Do you? Does anyone? This is the point I'm trying to make. We don't seem to have any data on this... yet people want to make really strong conclusions one way or another about whether this is going to be effective. We can debate whether laws should be enacted when data are lacking. I don't think we can really debate whether these laws will definitely be effective/ineffective because the data are not there to support the decision one way or the other.

That's not censorship. They are calling for the removal of a video from a particular website advocating a particular point of view. They are not calling for the video to be banned. I don't get to walk into a bookstore and demand that they sell my $&!#ty book and then whine about censorship when they don't sell it.

What actual data do you have to suggest that it does next to nothing for public safety? As far as I know, there are no studies in Canada to support or reject the usefulness of what is being done. It seems odd that people take such a strong stance on whether public safety benefits from something like this. You can have a personal opinion, but the idea that people 'know' how this will impact public safety is skeptical to me.
