This time because the landlord didn't like where my money was coming from, I think. I get disability assistance and would be making rent through those benefits. I would also be getting a rental subsidy to cover what I can't. While speaking to him over the phone, he asked if I was working and I explained that I wasn't but that rent would be paid for by the government as well as by a third-party. He gave me a tentative time for a viewing, said he would need to call back later to set a concrete time because he couldn't do it over the phone, and just never called back. He was calling from a private number and I guess he wasn't big enough to tell me outright that I would not be considered.
I could give this guy the benefit of the doubt, but these things have been happening with many landlords across many contexts. They cut communication right after learning I'm not currently able to pay my own rent, even though it will be covered indefinitely by other parties. I had to go through it last time I was trying to get market housing (that attempt was aborted and I entered a housing program instead because literally nobody would rent to me). I'm young and currently homeless, which doesn't help. I figure people assume I use hard drugs, am noisy, have a criminal record, got myself into my situation and am genuinely just bad news--which is wrong but hey whatever fits your white-picket-fence narrative.
