[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at New York Islanders | Feb. 09, 2023
*Buzzsaw* replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Unfortunate win.... very little chance the Canucks will get into 4th or even 5th worst position now. Compared to the rest of the teams below us, we have much better scoring... even with Horvat gone. Which means chances are, we get the odd win. And with the potential for Demko to return, then the situation gets even worse. We will probably end up 8-10 worst. -
[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at New York Rangers | Feb. 08, 2023

Pettersson has a disadvantage in that he doesn't have the upper body strength and is a little tall... he can't get right down. What he does have though is amazing reaction speed.... he is really quick with his hands... as we all know... and he is learning to anticipate the linesmen better. I doubt he becomes a really dominant center face off guy, but he should be a decent guy there. -

All good... tank, tank, tank. Have to believe the fact Kuzmenko's not playing with Pettersson is a decision to aid the tank. No reason not to play him with the guy who set up most of his goals... Kuz has signed an extension. Only reason is maybe they are still trying to pad Boeser's stats and improving the chances of a trade by playing him on the line instead of Kuz... although that is not really working. Ho hum.... as long as they are headed south in the standings I am happy. Also Podz got a goal... that is good. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
*Buzzsaw* replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I doubt Horvat asked that much in Vancouver... there is always a home town discount, especially if you are Captain. I don't doubt he would have signed for $8 million per year as a Canuck. But it is in the past now... the tale of the scoreboard will render the final verdict. -

Pettersson is a special player... and he continues to develop. -
[Rumour] Nikita Tryamkin eyeing NHL return
*Buzzsaw* replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think there is an excellent chance he will end up in Vancouver. Reasons: - Number of Russians on the team... Podz, Kuz, Mikheyev. - Fact Sergei Gonchar is an assistant. He is very well respected in Russia. - Benning... who really scr*ewed the pooch when it came to handling Tryamkin is gone. - Green, who disliked Tryamkin and underplayed him is gone. I am sure quite a few other teams will be interested so this is not a done deal... but if Rutherford wants to have a quick way to bolster the defense, this is the way to do it. -
Joni Jurmo? He’s our best prospect in the system, he should make the team
*Buzzsaw* replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
Jurmo does have a great set of wheels, and he is physical... if he gets more size he could be a big addition. Doesn't have much of a shot though and becomes a little hesitant when it comes to finishing. -
The issue is and remains important.... are the management of this team competent?

From the NYI website: https://www.nhl.com/islanders/news/bo-horvat-is-excited-for-new-beginnings-on-long-island/c-340606812 Notice not a bad word about anyone from the Canucks organization. But he does say again... "...I thought I'd be a Canuck for life..." Which tells you it wasn't him who wanted a trade. There must have been an offer which was significantly under value for him to leave. Lamoriello also makes it clear he intends to sign Bo... and that he was eager to make the trade before another team could. https://www.nhl.com/islanders/news/lamoriello-horvat-to-help-islanders-offense-and-power-play/c-340606692

Right now the Isles pick is #14. Bo is going to improve their team and the chances are the pick will be worse. And if they make the playoffs, we don't even get a lottery chance. NYI are two points out of the Wildcard behind Pittsburgh... with two less games in hand... or three points behind Washington with the same number of games. Washington is playing poorly... Ovechkin is injured and is a game time decision with a 'lower body' injury... if that is a knee or ankle, could be something serious. Washington depends on Ovie for their offense to run. If Ovie goes down for a significant number of games, the Isles have a very good chance of catching the Capitals.

If you look at the Presser with Lou Lamoureilo on the NYI site, he says specifically they need scoring. (this was before the Horvat trade was announced) So I believe he is actually trying to improve the team... I don't think this is part of a tank plan. By any measure, Horvat should improve their team... you are getting a bonafide #1/2 center who can score... and trading a bottom sixer who gets 15 goals a year. Whether they improve enough to make the playoffs is a question.

Islanders need to go for it. They are in their first window with Barzal... players of his quality usually get two chances... and the rest of the team behind him is older. They are missing scoring... otherwise they are not bad defensively. If they can bring up their goal output they have a good chance of making the playoffs and potentially going on a run. Bo should add the scoring they need... he is a proven PP scorer. And he will be a defensive improvement with what he brings in the faceoff circle and PK. He gives them a bonafide 2nd line center behind Barzal... double threat which many teams don't have. I think it makes sense... assuming Bo continues to score... even if he gets 45 goals for the year, i.e. 14 in the 30 games with NYI, that is a big addition. And the potential he might get 20-25 is something you can't overlook. Barzal is an awesome passer... and he really opens up the ice and draws D... something Bo would thrive on. We shall see.

RNH signed two years ago. He got term. He is two years older than Bo. Bo has only two less goals than RNH although he has played one less season. RNH has played most of the time on the PP with McDavid since 97 came into the league. Bo is more physical then RNH. Bo is quite a bit better in the faceoff circle. RNH opted to sign to stay with a team which has the best player in the league and which is widely expected to sometime win a Cup... he is the most obvious example of a player who put loyalty over $... most don't. To suggest that Bo would take a huge discount and sign for $5.1 million, i.e. $100,000 less than he is being paid in 2022/2023 is quite simply... ridiculous. Finally... who says Bo was asking for $8 million... lets see what Lou pays him.
