[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Seattle Kraken | Jan. 25, 2023

But then what is the point of replacing Boudreau? Why not wait till the summer? Save the owner some dough, give the new coach a chance with a whole new roster. -

I don't think there is anything wrong with our backups... as long as they are not being asked to play more than 1 game in 5. Martin was fine as a backup at the start of the season... and I don't doubt Delia would be ok too. A lot of a backup's performance is a function of him constantly working with the Goalie Coach... and getting his confidence built up and practicing, practicing, practicing. -

When they replaced Boudreau with Tocchet, they also needed to replace the Assistants. (Clarke excluded) They are still playing with that handicap. Maybe they'll take that step in the off-season. But by then the players might have lost any confidence in Tocchet.... looked like JT Miller has already. -

You're right. And I am actually a little relieved the team is not responding to Tocchet and playing better. They are actually trying to do what he is asking... backchecking and trying to be responsible... but it is crippling their O-Game. And they are still over-committing in the opposition's zone... and leaving themselves open to the counter. -

It doesn't matter much what type of structure Tocchet has the team play if they don't have the talent on the back end. The Canucks simply do not have the personnel manning the blue line. They need another two top 4 D-men... preferably with size. This is what Rutherford and his minions need to address. -

Its early... but at this point there is no 'New Coach Bump'... Team is playing horribly under Tocchet. -
Amazingly as it may seem... it appears the team is playing even worse for Tocchet than Boudreau. They don't seem to be any better defensively... and they have lost all their offensive zip and creativity. Pettersson in particular seems completely unclear what he is supposed to do. Whereas under Boudreau he was confident and pushing the play.

Quick poll, who becomes the back up when Thatcher Demko returns:

Delia shows more promise. -
Yeah sure... that's why he is on track for his best ever season. Management was just so sure he'd have another so so season, they didn't budget for him surprising them with his best performance. So they don't have the money to pay him what he deserves by NHL standards. And of course if the Canucks are not going to pony up... then Bo has to look elsewhere... and protect himself. Every team in the league would love to have him. He knows it, Canucks management were too stupid to anticipate Horvat proving his point.

Bruce is a personable funny guy... no surprise he found a job with a sports Network.

Benning has been gone for more than a year. The current management group had a chance to make decisions and reverse some of the negative trends which Benning had started. They should have had the information they needed. Yet they made the decisions to sign Miller and qualify and extend Boeser. And they made the decision to sign Ilya Mikheyev. All of those decisions led to where the team is now... unable to sign Horvat because the team will go over its CAP limit. And probably unable to sign Kuzmenko for the same reason. They are now in the position of potentially losing both players... two the of the three best players on the team this year. (other obviously is Pettersson) They put themselves in this position by not anticipating or making allowance for what should have been obvious. They knew Bo Horvat would be in the last year of his contract before UFA... the experience of watching other UFA's over the years should have told them players pull out all the stops and work the hardest in the last year before UFA... but they didn't take that into account... Rutherford admitted as much in his interview... he said they had budgeted for Bo producing at a similar rate this year as he did in 2021/2022... even though he had improved every year and was still young. Now when Bo steps up and shows his best year ever, they are unable to give him a fair market value contract. They wanted to re-sign Bo... now they seemingly can't. They signed Kuzmenko out of the KHL because they thought he could be a high scoring forward in the NHL. But despite the glowing reports of their own Scouts surprisingly, they didn't budget for the cost in re-signing him if he performed as they projected he would. When they signed him initially, they could have locked him down for a couple years at a bargain price... but they preferred to be cheap and make it only one year. Now they are up against the CAP limit again when it comes to his contract. This was supposed to be a veteran management group, with vast experience and the knowledge of how to operate within CAP limits. But what they have shown is the opposite. They are getting caught out like a bunch of Rookie GM's. Now they are in desperation mode... trying to unload Horvat, trying to unload Boeser, etc. Most likely they will not get value for assets because other GM's know they are desperate. It is possible they will lose Horvat for nothing.... in the same way Benning lost Markstrom, Tanev and Edler for nothing. Now I am hoping they do pull the rabbit out of the hat and somehow unload excess CAP as well as re-signing Horvat... but it is looking like this is a real longshot. Management owns this whole situation.

So what that he's tough. He's not on the ice anymore. More interested in his understanding of structural strategies for improving the team and the psychology of improving their mindset.

As I predicted when I argued against firing Boudreau mid season, (I would have no problem in firing him after the season) one of two things will result from the change in Coaches. First of all...there WILL be a bounce. Then we will see one of two below: 1) The Canucks will barely squeak their way into the playoffs... and be eliminated in the first round. Ownership will pocket the proceeds from the Playoff home games and proclaim the Cup is the next stop. Management will congratulate Tocchet for performing a miracle and themselves for hiring him. Zero chance of drafting Bedard or anyone important. or 2) The Canucks will rise in the standings enough to move out of contention for Bedard and the top choices... and settle for a player who is barely worthwhile spending a 1st round draft on. Management will congratulate themselves on improving the team's record. Canucks will improve their record next year slightly... and maybe make the playoffs. But the CAP problems will persist along with lack of defense. Ho hum... -

Bettman would love to see the Hawks get #1 overall... his buddy Rocky Wirtz is probably slipping some shares and gratuities under the table. Wirtz family is 2nd most influential owners in NHL behind Jacob family in BAAAHHHSTIN. -

Absolutely useless win.
