Is Markstrom now the Elite Goalie he was always projected to be?
*Buzzsaw* replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in Canucks Talk
Once again with the Devils game, Markstrom made a strong argument that he has turned around his game in a real way. It is even more surprising he is playing so well when you consider the team has basically left him high and dry and without any protection. -
Is Markstrom now the Elite Goalie he was always projected to be?
*Buzzsaw* replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in Canucks Talk
The Seattle expansion draft is one of the questions which relates to any decision on Markstrom's future with the team. Can only protect one goaltender... so the potential for the Canucks to get burned big time is there if Demko is showing well. 2021 is just about when Demko, (or even potentially Di Pietro) is starting to show their skill level. If the team is in a longterm contract with Markstrom that complicates things... unless he is completely underperforming, in which case the Canucks could expose him. The team also has to consider the fact he might just test the open market... he is a UFA. So do they re-sign him early... and maybe pay too much? Or do they look at a trade... even though Demko may not be ready? Its a big can of worms. -
These guys are evaluating players on raw individual physical skill... but there is more to the game than that. Mario is #1 when you look at pure individual skill. But hockey is a team game, and NO ONE... no one, used their team mates like Gretzky. Gretzky was a multiplier... he made everyone he played with so much better, and he made them use their abilities to the full. Gretzky was like a multi-headed beast when he played... you couldn't just watch him, you had to watch everyone else in an opposing sweater... and if you didn't, then the person you weren't watching would get the puck distributed to him by Gretzky and he would score. Every player on the ice with Gretzky became like an appendage of Wayne's mind which he could use to get the puck in the net. Yeah, Mario could beat you one on one far better than Gretzky, but you gotta look at the scoring totals for Gretzky's linemates and the Oiler team as a whole.... then you start to see Wayne's greatness.

I know a lot of people will disagree... but I think Petey could do with a maintenance day. Might give him a chance to recover from the various hits/etc. he's been taking. And also might give him a little perspective and give him a chance to re-think his creativity and confidence.

There is no question Jacob Markstrom has seen this season transform his career trajectory. He has posted better numbers and performed better than all recent expectations... despite playing behind a porous defense. But is this really a surprise? Markstrom when originally drafted was projected to be an elite goaltender... a franchise piece. The question is, has he finally reached his potential? Or is this season an anomaly.... and just a blip in his career of underachievement? There is also the fact his contract expires in 2019... what do the Canucks offer him?

What Guaranteed Draft Position? With Simulators, Current #8
*Buzzsaw* replied to TheGuardian_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Not worried... I know they won't finish in last so it will take a lucky ball bounce to get the #1. Between 4th and 9th there is not a huge difference in the odds... so I would be happy anywhere in there. -
EP is looking tired. Wondering if there is a way the coaches can reduce his even strength playing time? Either that or put in a mandatory curfew for him.

Not impressed. 1st game he did nothing... no chemistry with Boes or Petey. 2nd game was given a couple gold plated chances and did nothing. Invisible in the D-Zone.

Gudbranson NOW officially The WORST PLAYER in the League
*Buzzsaw* replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
Basically RU is a guy who wants to trade EVERYONE... nobody is fit to play on this team. So eventually he gets proven correct because one of the dozens of players he demanded be traded... gets traded. -
Couple thoughts: - The next time Petey gets hammered... then I'll expect those who called for the Gudbranson trade to man up and acknowledge that softness has an effect - When the defense starts looking even more like a dumpster fire than it currently is, PLEASE don't lets hear TRADE D threads - Benning has clearly f*cked up in not getting a D body in return for this trade... even if that body was an AHLer... because Utica is going to be a mess - I really hope this trade means Tryamkin is in Bennings back pocket and is on his way to the Canucks as soon as the KHL season is done
-
Gadjovich needs to work on his skating and D-Zone play... he definitely is a tough guy, but needs work on the other elements. I love the guys attitude and he has potential, but it'll likely be a year.

The closer we get to the trade deadline, the more chance the Canucks can offload Gagner. Salary considerations are are a little less with most of the season gone. However, the real problem the signing team is stuck with a $3 Million + salary to pay in 2019/2020... unless the Canucks agree to eat part of the contract. Personally I think since the Canucks will be paying the bill anyway, any kind of deal would be worthwhile, even if they eat 2 million of the last year's contract. Other teams would probably consider him a reasonable pickup at $1 million per. And maybe the Canucks could pick up a minor league player for Utica.

How long until Markstrom has proven himself?
*Buzzsaw* replied to The_Rocket's topic in Canucks Talk
Most of that poor save percentage is from that 10 game stretch back in November when the team was limping along without nearly all their defense and most of their key defensive forwards. -

His improvement started at the beginning of the season.... 50 games ago. -
Obviously Pouliot is worse than Aaron Rome... WAY worse. In fact, they should not be mentioned in the same sentence... Aaron Rome tried every game he played and he stepped up when the crunch came.

I had two concussions... both from Motorcycle accidents. (neither my fault) First accident, out for a month, felt ok after that. 2nd accident, out for a year, thought I was ok, started work, and then the symptoms returned after 3 months... out for another six. I still wake up on occasional odd days and feel like $&!# for no reason. I have been watching Baertschi carefully.... he had a couple big collisions after he came back... also was tripped up and driven into the net once. Contact sport will exacerbate concussion effects faster than anything. Baertschi may need to take six months or a year off. That was the situation with Crosby... and he several times had to take long periods off. The good news is he recovered well enough to be a Conn Smythe winner and lead his team to two Cups. Those people who rag on Crosby and accuse him of being a prima donna when he complains about dirty plays have no idea how frustrated he must be with cheap shot artists. Personally I think if a player cheap shots someone, he should be out as long as the player he hit is out.

This is a big relief. Hopefully he will get some exercises to strengthen his knee and maybe a light cloth brace if necessary.

Jake Virtanen could be a top six player with the ability to break a game wide open... if he used his physical abilities. Unfortunately for him and the Canucks, he is only using 50% of his potential. Things he could do a lot more of: - Hit... he has a lot of opportunities because of his speed and size, but he does not hit as much as he could. He should be leading the team in hits... instead Motte is. - Drive to the net... he has the size and speed to do this... but when was the last time you saw him drive to the net against opposition? He only goes to the net when he has a clear breakaway... if he has any opposition, he either shoots or goes behind the net - Cut to the middle... he always goes wide, rarely cuts to the middle. For someone who is so strong on his skates and so fast, he is missing a huge number of opportunities to get himself in a better scoring position. Instead of always having to shoot at a bad angle off the wing, he could be giving himself opportunties in the slot. Which would give him a lot more goals... because he does have a very good shot. All of the mentioned above are about confidence and courage... Jake seems to lack both... very strange considering how strong a player he is. Obviously trying to use his physical skills comes with some risk, i.e. hitting means having to back up hits with fights sometimes... going to the net means having to risk injury from collisions.... and cutting to the middle risks a bigger chance of a hit from a D or backchecking forward. Jake has to ask himself: "Do I want to be a peripheral player who is so so in impact... or do I want to be aggressive and really impact the game?"
-
No one will trade for Baertschi... he is damaged goods. Either he recovers and plays for Vancouver or he doesn't play. Canucks would have to reveal his medical details to any team who they traded to anyway. Lets just hope he is ok. He may need to take a year off like Crosby.
-
Whoever gets hired will have the worst job in the league. Hope management has more sense in who they hire. They do need to hire someone with a lot of experience. Gotta wonder what McDavid makes of all this... he probably is thinking ".... I should demand a trade."
-
Watching a bit of the Calgary vs Edmonton game... have to ask: How does Chiarelli still have a job?
-
Who was it who said he wouldn't miss any games and the injury wasn't serious?
-
One of the stupidest set of labels I have seen in a long time and really disrespectful of 3 great Canucks players.
-
Pettersson is too young. He gets an 'A'. 'C' goes to Bo... this is his team... he also has the physical play which is needed in great captains. It may be that EP gets the Captain's C later, but right now it makes sense it is Bo.
