  1. Not surprised at this situation. Jays showed all the wrong signs when they partied like they were already champs, for simply winning their division. Manager should have kept the champagne out of the dressing room and put their heads into the reality that they had only made a start... not won it all. The facts also were... they were on a hot streak... and hot streaks end. Unfortunately for them, it happened to end a couple games before the season finished. Their big bats are cold as ice. This was not helped by Gibbons resting the vets as soon as the division was won... you don't do that unless your team already has the Pennant locked up. The team didn't need rest. Then he compounded that by putting in Buelke for the last game, just to try to get him 200 innings... wrong again, you play to win, use your best option, not a tired pitcher. So they end the season on a down note... and that leads into the playoffs. They could still recover, but winning three straight is not easy.
  2. Nice to see Burr get a lucky bounce... but he is due for some after the 2013-2014 season. By the way, he did not take a stupid penalty, if you look at the replay, Ramo was out of the crease when Burr bumped him, it should not have been called. But as usual, the Refs use any excuse to penalize the guy who had the temerity to point out their bullsh*t.
  3. If Richardson comes back at center and replaces Vey, I'd like to see Baertschi brought up again. I think he is a much more talented player than Vey, who has also had quite a few defensive miscues lately. Prefer to see a little more offensive firepower and speed than an average player like Vey.
  4. Happy Birthday Burr... we know you aren't going to quit just cause its the post-season.
  5. I'm predicting the League will hand Burrows a 15 game suspension, and Bieksa a 5 game.
  6. It's a way to give a little love to Burr and laugh at the guys who wrote him off last season.
  7. Great shot in the shootout, and that was on the capper on the night. I thought Burr sparked the team throughout, being willing to take on Kreider and give up 40 lbs and 4 inches.... that's guts.
  8. Did Burr get a star in tonight's game? (versus Minni) He should have... as well as the assists, he was a huge part of the play all night, got Dubnik off his game completely.
  9. Great pass by Burr to Daniel for goal 4.
  10. Nobody is trading Burrows... he is the spark for the team right now. And if he's such a plug... how did he put up the numbers he did, when others couldn't... Basically your post is a bunch of bad tempered hot air.
  11. Another complete game by Burrows... Goal, assist, hits, Pk, aggravated the Penguins all night and got them off their game and taking penalties. Got the Sedins back into their grove, if you want a line to start rolling, put Burrows on it. Really happy to see him contributing again like he can... he deserves the 'A' on his jersey.
  12. Yeah, I know there's that other thread, but I wanted to make a clear point. Everyone last year was saying Burrows was washed up and done. And it looked pretty bad... what with the injuries, especially the ankle break, for a hockey player, that is most difficult one to recover from. And starting this season he was a little slower, a little more tentative... looked a little tired. And that resulted in his demotion to the 4th line. But Burrows is Burrows, put in a tough situation and he responds. He put his nose to the grindstone and would not quit. What I am seeing now is close to the complete player we saw in 2010/2011. The wheels are almost back completely, the anticipation and smarts are back, the hitting and aggravating play are back, the goal scoring, (considering he's not playing on the top line) is back. Even when he's not putting actual points on the board, he is contributing. Take a look at the goals the Canucks scored in the last 10 games, and you'll see Burrows figures in them if he's on the ice. Goal by Frankie Corrado is a case in point, Burrows made that happen just by his persistence and ability to get the opposing defense off their game... in that case, I think three Tampa players were too busy trying to deal with Burrows aggravation to notice Corrado sneaking in. No question the guy is getting older, but he's shown clearly this season that he's not finished by a longshot. If a fraction of the drive Burrows has could rub off on Kassian, we'd see a real turnaround in that guy's career.
  13. Nice to see Burr have a complete game... Gets a goal, does a killer job on the PK, and keeps the opposition line off the scoresheet.
  14. Yeah, but that was a late hit, and it happened as the puck was already in transition and back towards the Russian zone. Wrong time to get physical. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is stupid, if you listen to his interviews, he has the brains to understand what is needed, I think he is just a little too used to Junior and the way you can be sloppy there. A professional level coach who knows how to handle a kid of his age should be able to get him to understand what is needed. He definitely does need either a puck moving defenseman or a center who can pass to complement him. The absolute worst he can be is a 215 lb version of Mason Raymond with a mean streak and a willingness to hit. (pre back injury Raymond) I think he has room to grow and will get bigger. The absolute best he can be is Jonathan Toews 2 on the wing.
  15. Virtanen's whole attitude is one of waiting for an offensive opportunity... he doesn't think defense. He's always ready to take off down the ice.... circling at the defensive blue line. He doesn't use his physical abilities or his scating ability in the defensive zone. Considering his amazing speed and tremendous strength he could be all over opposing players in the backcheck, but I don't think I saw him do that once... as soon as he passes center ice heading towards his own zone, he is gliding. He only seems to come alive in the offensive zone. I like the way he stands up for his team mates... not at all afraid to challenge a larger player, and has a good hands in a fight... he seems to be quite willing to mix it. He will definitely be a coaching challenge, but if someone can get him to wrap his head around the idea of the backcheck, he has all the speed and strength to become a Selke trophy winner, he only has to take a few steps and he catches up with anyone on the ice and then can force them off the puck... just needs to want to do that.
  16. First time to have a chance to see Virtanen playing against opposition which comes close to what he'll face in the NHL. Gotta say I am really impressed with this kid's offensive skills. He hits like a freight train. He scates like the wind. He's got a mean streak. He's got a wicked shot and release, but he's not one dimensional, he also knows how to dish the puck and he's not selfish. Defensively he needs a LOT of work. He was lazy on one of the Russian goals, he didn't pick up his check. I watched him do that a couple times... And of course he was sitting in the penalty box when they scored another. In the closing 5 minutes of the 3rd period he sat on the bench, the coach was not going to take a chance on putting him out there. The good news is defense can be taught, you can't teach someone the skills he has offensively. Of all the guys I watched in the tournament, have to say Sam Reinhart was the guy who impressed me the most... great leadership, amazing ability to see the ice, very mature for his age... have to wonder if someday he will Captain a Stanley Cup team... To me he is more of a complete player than McDavid... would love to see Vancouver find a way to pry him loose from Buffalo. Probably never happen...
  17. Still has a heart bigger than most... a guy who can inspire the team.
  18. First of all, I am a huge fan of Burr... I think the organization owes him a debt for his past play and low salary... they should be patient with him this year. Burr is still snake-bit with the injuries, but he is trying hard and doing what he can. Probably he needs to be a little more restrained with the agitation... it is getting him too many penalties and those are costing the team. He also needs to focus on playing his position, not getting caught by a speedy forward... leave starting an offensive rush for his line more to Bonino and Higgins. I'd like to see him more on the penalty kill... but maybe the coach is trying to rest him for his regular shift.
  19. Correct... but may need to wait till next year.
  20. How many times does it have to be said? "His shoulder is healing well." And Virtanen was not picked for his playmaking skills... he was picked for his scoring and speed. The playmaker is the piece of the puzzle we will need to find next year... if Shinkaruk one of our other prospects isn't that player.
  21. Don't quote me as a support for Nylander or Ehlers... I don't think either is going to be a superstar. There were only two franchise forwards in this draft in my opinion... Bennett or Reinhart.
  22. I think Virtanen will be a solid 2nd liner.... But he isn't the franchise player the Canucks need to win a Cup. The Canucks should start dumping more of the existing team for more draft choices next year. They still need that elite playmaker to center the team around... Benning wanted the #1 so he could have that player... ie. Reinhart, he didn't get it, so he is going to have to look for a way to get that next year.
  23. Trevor Linden shows that not only is he a nice guy... he is a smart manager. Benning is going to be a great addition to the team... has a good reputation in the league, lots of knowledge and will be a great team player. I see him as the nuts and bolts of Trevor's vision. He will be the detail guy, Trevor will set broad policy. I think the Canucks are on their way back.
  24. AV is a much better coach than Tortorella. Yet he still needed to be fired... he was running out of ideas with the Canucks. The problem was the Canucks management then hired Tortorella, easily the worst choice. In my opinion we should have picked Lindy Ruff, one of the most underrated coaches in the league, and one who gets the best out of his team, even when that team is lacking in talent.
