  1. Hit this nail right on the head Canucks need a D who is a powerplay specialist to work with the Sedins... is that person Boyle?... He has the skills, but is getting old and will likely see his production drop off this year, his speed and defense skills are also going to degrade, he was a -8 this year despite being on a good team... Erhoff would be a nice fit, but is too costly. I'd prefer to see someone younger, but young puck moving defensemen are hard to come by. I suggested a trade with Nashville for Roman Josi... but that would cost us. But Kesler for Josi + a good prospect and a low pick would work in my opinion. Nashville hasn't forgotten what Kesler did to them... he's gonna give us high value.
  2. Refereeing is fixed. They call Detroit for a ultra soft tripping penalty... Bruins player lost his edge by himself, but they don't call Thornton when he hits the Detroit player right in the numbers and slams him facefirst into the boards. This league stinks.
  3. Of all the players in the top five, who are forwards, Bennett impresses me the most. He is definitely a pivotal offensive player who a team could be built around. He's a Tavares type. However he is small, and small could mean injury... either that or concern about the NHL hitting could render him ineffective. Still if there is a chance the Canucks could draft him, they should. I think that Sam Reinhart is more likely to be available, if the Canucks can throw in a sweetner to the team holding the higher draft. Looking lower than the top 5, I am not impressed with Ritchie... seems too slow and although he has better passing skills than Virtanen, they aren't that good. Virtanen is a straight ahead type of scorer the team needs... he looks like he could play on the 2nd line with Kassian given a year in the AHL. Ehlers is another smurf.
  4. Virtanen's pluses: 1) Great wrister, loves to shoot, quick release, this is his best attribute, his accuracy is quite impressive. 2) Good speed and stability on his scates at speed 3) Good size and physicality, barely 18 and already 208, gonna likely end up at 215-220 Virtanen's negatives: 1) Bit of a puck hog, needs to learn how to pass more and use his team mates Plus like all young kids, he doesn't play defense well, but that's not uncommon and can be corrected. Overall a decent pick, and one I'd take over some of the smurfs out there. I also think we should stay away from some of the concussion prone choices.
  5. No I don't want Tortorella to stay for another year. He has already done enough damage to this team with his hysterical emotional outbursts and poor coaching decisions. The guy can barely control himself let alone a professional Hockey Team.
  6. Slater and Kesler have an exchange... they are physically challenging each other. A minute later, Slater holds his knee in position, he can see the collision, he definitely braces himself to put his strength behind holding his knee solid. Kesler does not even see him coming. Both players spin on contact, Slater looks at the Ref immediately... He knows. But no 5 minute penalty... Ho Hum.... just another day at the office for another NHL Ref. Daniel Sedin gets boarded behind the net, serious injury... no problem... Kesler gets knee taken out... serious injury... no problem... Oh wait... the Canucks are running out of Star players... ok then you can take a run at Hamhuis... no problem. We've been going through this for the last 4 seasons, ever since the Canucks became contenders... It's been very obvious, the NHL might as well have put up a sign which says: "OPEN SEASON ON CANUCKS"
  7. #1 This is on Gillis for putting the weight on a rookie goalie. #2 This is on Tortorella for not pulling Lack after the 4-3 goal. Both these guys are bozos. Gillis has made a horrendous series of trades this year, the worst in history. Tortorella has completely lost the room, he has turned this team into a complete set of headcases.
  8. Mattias is a rental.... He is a UFA. This trade is Lu for Markstrom... plus we pay 1 million of Lu's salary... We trade the #2 Canadian Goaltender, one who went to the Olympics, and get a second rate Swede in return. This is clear proof every GM in the league has a hate on for Gillis and that we will NEVER get any good deals while he is in charge. I am seriously concerned about what we will get for Kesler.
  9. So we trade a proven #1 goalie who was responsible for keeping us in the playoff hunt, for another goalie who will never be better than a backup, who is worth nothing, plus we get a 4th, MAYBE 3rd liner. And we still have to pay 15% of Lu's salary????? This is a good deal?????
  10. Kesler has nothing to be ashamed of... he was blocking shots and trying hard all Olympics... But it is a team game... and if the rest of your team is mailing it in, one guy is not going to do it on his own.
  11. I think Kesler played better than a lot of the US team... At the end he was still grinding in the corners and trying to set up a goal. It's guys like Kane who should be ashamed...
  12. No Pride... Sorry but I can't see a Canadian team lying down and dying like this American team. They are taking stupid penalties... they don't care. A Bronze medal is not something to laugh at... there are plenty of nations who would consider it a great accomplishment... to treat this game as a throwaway is #1 disrespectful to the Olympic movement... and most important, #2 disrespectful to your own country.
  13. The good news folks, is that Burrows is gonna have that stupid mask off by the end of the month. And then things are going to inevitably improve. Here are the facts: 1) Burrows is getting into positions that give him scoring chances. The fact that he is not scoring is more related to him having to wear the mask and his frame of mind than his skills. 2) When someone gets the number of scoring chances he is getting it is only a matter of time before the puck goes in the net. If he gets the mask off and he still can't score, then we have a problem. But lets hope the coach understands what is happening and gives him the opportunity after the Olympic break.
  14. Gillis should have hired Lindy Ruff. Ruff is tough, but he is not a nutcase, and he respects his players.
  15. Yeah, they lost. But they played well enough to win. LA took advantage of a single error, and put away their chance, Canucks had a number of good chances and couldn't finish. But they had the chances. More importantly, the Canucks came out and revealed the Kings to be imposters. The so-called "Big Bad Kings" turn out to be a group of cowards who wouldn't stand up and fight like men, but instead turned turtle or attempted to duck out of confrontations. They totally lost the intimidation factor. Last game they physically chased the Canucks out of the arena because the Canucks were afraid to challenge. This time, the Canucks team bit the bullet, stood up and found the guys they were facing were gutless punks. Nolan tries to deliberately injure Henrik, and then shows his absolute lack of grit by refusing to fight Sestito. Then he tries to do the same to Weise and gets showed up again. Brown ducks out of multiple fights, then thinks he can take on Kesler as an easy win since Kes doesn't fight, but instead gets pummelled. Matt Greene at 230 lbs to Bieksa's 198 shows his FEAR of getting beat like Boyle by resorting to a cheap wrestling takedown, but still gets a punch in the face from Bieksa as he goes down. Much as I admire Doughty for his skills, he showed himself to be a little whining puke when after he tries to pick Weise, gets slew footed for his trouble... and then has a temper tantrum after the Refs fail to notice. And the Kings were also put on notice that their goalie is fair game if Luongo is. I think the game is going to define the rest of the matchups between the Canucks and Kings. No more Fear. I think post game interviews said it all. None of the Canucks seemed dispirited at the loss, in fact they all seemed elated in a quiet way. They had dared to stand up to the schoolyard bully and found out he wasn't so tough at all. I think the fear is actually now on LA's side. The goals will come. Only negative is that Kassian really needs to understand when to pick his moments.... too many unnecessary penalties. Sestito understands exactly what he needs to do... I don't regret his penalties at all.
  16. It would be stupid to make a trade now... Better to wait for the deadline, or if we are in the playoffs, in the summer. I personally think its time to consider unloading Kesler. He still has a lot of value, could put a contender over the top into Stanley Cup territory if picked up at the deadline. Price is a 1st rounder and a player, or a 1st and 2nd. Edler goes in the summer, so does Bieksa... both are past their prime and on the way downhill. Canucks need to stock up on draft picks, get a big body to the play with the Sedins and look to the future.
  17. Canucks can play a lot better than this. Only guy hitting was Sestito, and there are a lot of Canucks who can hit. Where was the rest of the team? They basically laid down and died. This was a situation where one team, (the Canucks) decided the game was lost, BEFORE they played it. Mental failure.
  18. Bottom line: Kassian needs to grow up and take responsibility. There are plenty of players his age who are taking charge of their own careers and playing consistent hockey. #1 he needs to work on his defensive play and his decision making in the Vancouver end of the rink. Last night's tying goal by Philly was started by Kassian making a stupid play and letting them get control in the Canucks zone. Every game he makes similar mistakes, those are purely mental and are something he can fix by focusing. #2 he needs to consistently finish his checks, not just when he's in the mood or when he thinks the guy he's gonna hit isn't going come back at him. #3 he needs to take the puck to the net ALL THE TIME. This does two things, a) draws opposition defense to him, opens up space for his linemates. Right now he is starting to get lazy and let Booth do the driving to the net. This kid does have potential. Whether that potential is more than Hodgeson is a question which now irrelevant. The trade is done, and he's a member of the Canucks until he either proves himself or gets traded or waived. But its up to him to prove he was worth the value sent to Buffalo. Right now he is not doing that.
  19. It's great to celebrate, it was a complete win, and don't believe all that cr*p about Boston being injured and sick, the Canucks are missing an all-star defenseman and the key to the 1st line. But let's not forget last years final game versus Chicago where the Canucks put a beating on the Hawks. Everyone was saying we'd do the same in the Western Finals. But we first had to get by San Jose, and they were not such a good matchup... This team has to get by Anaheim, San Jose, L.A. or St Louis before it even gets to the Western Conference and long before it meets up with Boston (?) in the Final. Nose to the grindstone and lots more work to be done.
  20. Here are the facts: The Bruins are a team with a lot of skill, they pass well, they can shoot the puck and they know how to play defense. But they are also the dirtiest team in the league, something which they got away with for years and which won them the Stanley Cup thanks to the Refs looking the other way. And now they are getting old, and other stronger younger goons are starting to line up to administer beatings. What goes around comes around. All that aside, the Canucks should avoid starting fights, avoid goonery, it will just backfire on us and turn us into another Pittsburgh.
  21. I was watching the video of the Bruins bench after Thorton gooned Orpik... and they showed a shot of Iginla, and the expression on his face was: "What am I doing on this team...?"
  22. Boston thugs are getting old... now they are starting to get beat down by other thugs in the league. They can no longer get away with their intimidation and threats to injure. Canucks should play clean and hopefully Boston is too beat up to do otherwise.
  23. Kassian has had a huge opportunity in Vancouver. He was the golden boy, with Gillis invested in seeing him succeed. This gave him far more time and patience from the coaches than any ordinary rookie. If he really had the smarts he would have been working his tail off to improve the skills he has... first one to the rink in the morning, last one to leave. Practising his shot, practising his skating, working, working, working. But that wasn't the case. 1st full year he plays he comes to camp overweight. 2nd year he does work a little harder in the summer to lose weight, but no significant improvement in his skills. No difference in his shot, no difference in his skating. His game understanding has improved, his overall ability to position himself offensively has improved, and he does take the puck to the net a little better. But offensive is his only improvement, his defensive skills are still rock bottom, he is continually giving the puck away or passing to a team mate and putting them in a worse position than himself, thus guaranteeing a turnover. This kid really needs to understand that his future as a big time NHL player is now on the line. If he wants to spend the rest of his 3-4 year career on the 4th line, then keep up what he's doing. If he wants to score 25 goals a year and be physical presence, (that's the most we can hope for) then he needs to buckle down.
  24. Lots of morons posting who don't understand hockey or Burrow's contributions to the team. Whether or not he was scoring, he was helping win games. Torts understood that, its why Burrows was still on the 1st line. Hopefully he will be back early in the New Year.
