I don't see it. I have trading Roussel simply to fit in a 23 man roster. I don't see any way of fitting Toffoli unless we rid of Eriksson's contract or don't opt to sign Tanev/add a top 4 RD (most of which will cost around Tanev dollars anyway) or don't sign Marky. It'll take a lot of favourable things to happen to retain Toffoli IMO.

There is still the bonus overage of 1.7 million to be subtracted from next year's cap. You haven't taken into account if we re-sign Motte, Gaudette or MacEwen. I think between Motte, Gaudette and MacEwen, we are looking at about 4-4.5 million. I think Jake will get around 2.5. Add in the "rookie" to replace Stecher, it would be cheapest 700k in Rafferty and need an extra dman, Brisebois is cheapest at 700k. So for math sake, say 10 million including the bonus overage. That leaves 7 million. Buying out Sutter saves us 2.3 million in cap space (it adds 1.2 million for the following season, so ideally we trade him with 50% retention, but I'm going on the assumption that trades will be difficult and doing what we can in our control). Now we are at 9.3 in cap space. Say Marky gets 5.5 and Tanev does 4.5, that's 10 million. So we need to still save another 700k on a 22 man roster that I have right now. Depends if Ferland (or another player) is an LTIR candidate when the season starts). We could paper down a player that doesn't require waivers and put the player on LTIR to start the year and call someone up. Now we don't know if this is a possibility, so can't bank on it. If we could get Motte, Gaudette, MacEwen down to the 4 million mark and Jake closer to the 2 million mark, then we could squeeze in this roster. So we probably still need to trade Roussel (or in worst case, buy him out) or move Benn if we want to hit a 23 man roster adding a couple of prospects to the lineup. I can't see us fitting in Toffoli either way unless LE retires or his full cap comes off the books. I don't see us keeping Toffoli over Tanev as the defense would take a massive downgrade. Of course there are scenarios that we trade Virtanen and tag him with a cap dump, but this is where I currently see things without drastic moves. Miller - EP - Boeser Pearson - Bo - Virtanen Ferland - Gaudette - MacEwen Roussel (Lind/Hoglander/Jasek/Michaelis) - Beagle - Motte Eriksson Edler - Myers Hughes - Tanev Benn - Rafferty Brisebois - (Sautner/Rathbone/Juolevi/Chatfield) Markstrom Demko

(Proposal) Assets to Kraken for Expansion Consideration

Reading this thread title again, I feel like there's an ASSets to KRAKen joke somewhere here. -
Or is that too far the other way?

It seemed all expansion consideration deals backfired. I imagine Tryamkin becoming a #1 dman for them if this occurred -
Hart Trophy finalists unveiled

Conn Smythe is pretty much awarded to the highest scoring forward that gets to the finals, unless there's a unreal goaltending performance. There's an equal number of GMs in the west and east, so who knows. I don't know what the representation is from the media in the voting. Like I've said before, it's probably not as obvious in the awards where's it's generally amongst the best in the league who are highlighted more. I think I was just saying I didn't want more awards because it would give more reason for agents to ask for more. But if there were to be more awards, I'd prefer to win the ones votes by my peers who have played against me and have a better understanding of what I've done on the ice. -

The sports media job is to watch these games. We are not comparing working joes like us. Surely their work schedules revolve more around game times where in the East, the last game would end at 1am. Like you said, they might watch a period and catch the highlights for the rest of the game whereas out West, there's more opportunity to watch all of the action. There's local media for sure, but the national media is TSN and SN and we know where their loyalties lie. I respect your view and I agree to disagree. -

Hart Trophy finalists unveiled
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I'm all for awards and I think there could be many awards given out (eg best defensive dman, award for most assists/best passer, etc). I think the Hart and Lindsey is a minor difference, so if they're going to have these two, then there might as well be more. I was just saying though that more awards leads to agents having reasons to inflate contracts (when in reality they've gained monetary rewards for winning the trophies). So while I would like for more awards, I don't like what it would do for contract talks. In a cap world, agents take every angle they can to bump up contracts which is a hindrence to the teams and the league. As for the eastern bias part, it may be less obvious on the upper levels of the league as there is more coverage on them overall. But when you dip down further into the lineups, there is lesser known. It's quite simple in that it's easier for the East to watch their games at 7ish their time and may not be bothered to stay up past midnight on a regular basis and will just catch the highlights which misses out on a lot of what's happening. I think that's why a lot of awards are simplified to most points generally winning because it's an easy way to not have to deep dive into thinking who really deserves the awards. Just because there are articles written about Western teams (because some writers were assigned to dig into it), doesn't mean there isn't a bias in the grand scheme. Look at TSN and SN when a Toronto news story comes out. 19 of the past 30 Hart trophy winners came from Eastern teams. So 11 from the West with 4 of those coming from more central teams (games that start at like 8pm in the East). In the next grouping of 30 Hart trophy winners, 18 of 30 came from out East. Of the remaining 12, 8 won by the greatest player in the history of the game. Calder trophy isn't too different 18 of the last 30 out East with 12 in West (4 from central teams, so 8 truly Western teams). Selke tells a different story with the East winning 13 of 30. However, 11 central leaving 6 west. And like I said, this is just in the upper echelon of the league, get down further in the lineup and it's much more of a gap. That SN article of the top UFAs that you mentioned before has Tanev as an honourable mention despite being a top 4 RD and has players aging out (35+) and 3rd line forwards ahead of him. Go figure. -
In the pool website, can anyone explain to me what the symbols means after the point totals? Like why is there an "!" or "x" beside it? Also is there a way to see the players full point totals for the season since some of the point breakdowns seem to be split?

Hart Trophy finalists unveiled

I get this, but I just look at the argument in both threads and they're generally the same argument. Even the nominees are the same. Personally I rather win the award voted by my peers as the media has too much bias and watches the East more than the West. Anyway, I understand why there are two awards, but just think that with two different voters for it, they could both be voting for the same thing for both awards. They should have one group of voters and distinguish the difference between the two on what to vote for. But if they want to do a media/player award, then I think it could branch out further to more recognition. However at the same time, these awards are just props to give players more money on their contracts and we need less reasons for agents to inflate contracts. -

I get that due to the quality of the team around them making them invaluable for their team. However, then the players who are supposedly better with better support, wouldn't their talent be watered down and thus naming them league wide MVP seems a bit wrong when there was is a player that put up great numbers despite the lack of team support? I just think it's odd that there's two awards for something quite similar, where for example dmen could get the same recognition (especially more defensive minded dmen) and have that voted by their peers as they know who they have a tough time facing. -
Can the Canucks afford to let Chris Tanev walk away?
theo5789 replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
The only issue I have with moving Pearson is his chemistry with Bo. I had thought about moving Pearson last offseason, but to have someone that costs under 4 million producing 2nd line numbers isn't too shabby in a cap world. Bo was starting to be one of those guys that had rotating wingers, which he managed, but I bet he was glad to have a regular. The silver lining though is that Roussel also had put up good numbers with Bo as well. If we move out Pearson, we have him, Jake can go on LW, Ferland, and even Hoglander would get looks there, so there are still options. Not my top trade option, but could be a viable one given that he has value. But in your suggestion we also trade Roussel, which eliminates another option there. Benn, I find it difficult to find a trade partner given the season he had. And even with all this, I think it'd be very tight to try and fit Toffoli in still. We could buyout Sutter which would save 2.3 million next season (and add a million the next). We could buyout Baertschi, but that only saves about 500k (and adds 800k the next season) as opposed to sending him down, so trading him even at 50% retention is ideal, but don't see many takers. Whatever the case, I think our UFAs are in a good bargaining position if they want to use that in negotiations. I would said Dadonov is a low level 1st liner to top 2nd liner (I believe he was a 2nd liner in Florida), where Toffoli is more of an established 2nd liner that can compliment the 1st line. -
Speaking of this, I wonder where @Alflives has been. Hope he's doing alright.

Can the Canucks afford to let Chris Tanev walk away?
theo5789 replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
Well I did mention Hoffman and Hall in the top tier. Dadonov has good career numbers so far, but as you mentioned, he's older and Toffoli has a better two way game IMO as he's been on the PK with LA. So it depends if you want more of an all out offensive player or a two way guy, so all things being equal, I put them around the same secondary tier. Smart defensive players are always underrated. They have Dustin Byfuglien on the list for his name despite him missing an entire season out of shape and battling an injury. There are a few forwards on the list that I wouldn't put above Tanev. Barrie, I just find very overrated. I'd say Tanev is very similar to Hamonic (Hamonic is more physical, but I think Tanev has better IQ) in their defensive roles and both have injury issues, yet SN has Hamonic at 12. I think the point is they are indeed near the top of their UFA class, so they do have leverage. The only thing bringing them down is the market. -
If that's the top 5 list, then yes he's at least in the top 3 amongst that group. He was actually utilized often on the PK last season in Utica. I think he's being groomed to be Edler's replacement at some point hopefully. An LD of Hughes-Juolevi-Rathbone looks pretty darn good (assuming they all pan out).

Can the Canucks afford to let Chris Tanev walk away?
theo5789 replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
Current RD UFAs (in order IMO) are Pietrangelo (we'll see if he even makes it to UFA), then Barrie (although his season has been underwhelming, but no other offensive options available bumps his value up), then it comes down to Tanev, Ceci and Hamonic. Ceci and Hamonic are going to be about the same price range as Tanev. So I'd argue that he's within the top 3 available in his position. Aside from Hall and Hoffman, Toffoli is certainly within the upper regions of best available forward UFAs with Dadonov and maybe Namestikov. It drops off to Mikael Granlund, Craig Smith, Jesper Fast and maybe Simmonds and Galchenyuk. I might be missing a name or two, but it just shows that Toffoli is also a relatively highly ranked UFA. Luckily we have the team factor of Marky and Tanev that may give us discounts. Not sure about Toffoli yet, but I imagine he's limiting himself to want to stay out West. -
Hart Trophy finalists unveiled

I get what you're saying, but an argument that a player that has been most valuable to their team could also be the best player given that they had their incredible season while likely being a standout player on that team with less support. Also, if there is a distinguishable difference, then the voters should be the same with that in mind. One is voted by the media and the other is voted by the players and both could be interpreted to be voted for the same thing. -

theo5789 replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
Unlike others, I'm for acquiring Risto. I don't think that package gets it done though. Stecher has little value as an RFA that we can't afford to re-sign. I believe they have an abundance of RD so Stecher doesn't hold much value to them in that sense either. So it's really Virtanen and a 1st for their top minute all situations dman. With that said, I don't think we can afford him, JM and TT. Moving Sven isn't enough. The amount we save on sending Benn and LE down would be mostly negated to the fact that we have to bring up players to replace them. We only save just over a million by sending them down and at best replace them with a minimum wager (or don't go with a 23 man roster) which only really saves us a total of 500k between them. -

theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Considering it's the same nominees, why is there two awards for pretty much the same thing? I know one is voted by the media and the other is voted by the players, but it doesn't seem like any other award with this circumstance. Why not have the best dman go to a media and players vote as well? I imagine the players would have a better idea on which dman they have a harder time going up against. Perhaps defensive dmen would get more respresentation than the usual media picking out the top offensive dmen. -
I definitely agree that the cap situation isn't that bad, but I still don't think we can fit in Toffoli barring significant moves to unload cap. Mutually terminating is just that, it has to be mutual. Does Baertschi give up millions to sign likely a million dollar or less contract elsewhere? Are there even teams looking for his services? I don't think it'll be that simple. A buyout is more likely and that only saves us about 500k from last season. Teams with cap space will be hot commodities. The price for cap relief will have gone way up. There aren't many, if any at all, cap floor teams, so they can play hard ball. Players with trade restrictions likely block those teams also. With that said, Virtanen will cost 2.5, Gaudette 1.5-2, Motte 1, MacEwen 1, Stecher replacement 1, Fantenberg or replacement around 1. We are looking at roughly 8 million here. Add to Marky and Tanev's 10-11 and the overage of 1.7, so for math sake 12 million. That's 20 million without Toffoli and we have 17 million in space right now. So I see us needing to make those other moves you suggest along with a Baertschi buyout, but still not being able to afford Toffoli. We would have to lose Eriksson to do so and that's a damn near impossibility at this point. Upon further look, we could also buyout Sutter and save about 2.3 million in cap space for next year (while adding just over a million the following season). That is an option if we can't find a trade partner and assuming we need to retain anyway, it's about the same savings. Just trading him saves the million the following season.
