Like I said, Jake hasn't lived up to his 6th overall billing, but he's far from a bust and is starting to come into his own which is common for a lot of "power forwards". His speed, physicality and his newfound defensive work are attributes that are very welcome in building an actual team. If he finds his offense, then watch out. We still got an NHL player. There are plenty of teams that have been piss poor and couldn't draft to save their lives. Just we were in a situation that should boost our prospect pool doesn't mean it's an easy job in doing so. You still have to make it count. Haven't played a single NHL game stance is the most common debate over OJ. I have no doubt he will get a game, so I'm not worried about that. When you understand the context of the situation, it's not that OJ is a bad player choice, he was hit with unfortunate injuries that no one could've projected. This is the one thing he needs to overcome and he has shown all the signs of a top 4 dman. You call them B level prospects, but that's simply what all prospects drafted outside the 1st round are considered. The fact that we have "B level" prospects coming out of the 4th and 5th rounds is a good sign. Surely when TB drafted players like Point, Palat, and Kucherov, they would considered B level prospects until they made the show. During that Gillis era, no analysts had our prospect pool rated highly and considering that 3 of the names you mentioned were 1st round picks, you can see why. I get what you're saying about prospects getting hyped up, but even so called experts have seen an uptick in quality. This isn't just fan notion. You can nitpick every move made or you can widen your view and look at the progress of the team. A rebuild was inevitable (and arguably didn't start until the Sedins retired) and that comes with some poor seasons, no surprise. Many UFA signings were made as placeholders for young players to beat out so we wouldn't rush our prospects and were used to take on the hard minutes during known bad years to come so their confidence wouldn't get crushed (Horvat was getting destroyed in his 2nd year in the NHL). During our last 4 year stretch, the team has trended up in the standings to the point where we are on the brink of the playoffs this year. We are much closer in trajectory to teams like Colorado or Tampa than we are to teams like Edmonton or Buffalo (which you think we were considering the criticism of the team). The salary needs work, but it's far from a mess. Those that are patient (which ownership has mentioned to be as part of the rebuild process) understand the context of what's happening. You can't expect the team to be a full flight playoff team while gathering the next core given the starting point of Benning's tenure as you can't expect instant results. The best is yet to come with this team and that's when we will start to reap the rewards of Benning's work.

Virtanen may not be of the expectation of a 6th overall pick, but he's far from a "whiff". He's still a 1st round pick in a redraft, but probably around the mid-1st. He has been improving his offensive numbers over the years and perhaps the best is yet to come. You also cannot ignore Jake's vastly improved defensive game and speed in the equation of assessment. Offensive stats aren't everything. OJ is trying to overcome his injuries and if he can, then he has looked good in his playing stints. I think he will still make a career. If we are talking historically for the Canucks, this has been some of the best drafting for our franchise. Of course it's still going to take time to see how things play out, but many analysts have put our prospect pool in the top 5 in the league (and that's with all the graduates already on the roster). I believe Podkolzin will be a surefire player, so out of 5 top 10 picks (none higher than 5), he has two grand slams, one likely very good player, a decent one, and one "miss" that shouldn't be written off quite yet. The rest of our 1st round picks have been very good ones. We have several prospects that while they haven't cracked the NHL yet, they are looking very good in their respective leagues which is hopeful at the very least (when comparing to previous regimes). I predict Hoglander, Focht, Rathbone, Lind, Woo and DiPietro having significant impacts to our team and could be potential "stars". Players like Lockwood, Brisebois, and Gadjovich will get games, but may not have illustrious careers. Also cannot completely ignore overage prospect finds like Stecher and MacEwen, along with potentials in Rafferty and Michaelis. So while I get that a lot remains to be seen, there is certainly reason for optimism. I believe most teams find 1 or 2 players that reach 300 games or so and we are looking like we could very well be above that average. I imagine Benning getting 3 consecutive Calder nominees (potentially 2 winners) is a feather in Benning's cap towards his drafting status though (and need I remind without a pick above #5).

All makes sense except the masks when you're in your own group. Limited food and drinks will still have to be indulged somehow and the safest place would seem to be in your own bubble with your group, which would give some leeway of mask wearing once you're in your zone.

[Signing] Canucks sign Jack Rathbone
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There's certainly a spot if we don't re-sign Fantenberg. Assuming all goes well, Rathbone gets a spot. If not, Brisebois gets promoted and split duties with Benn. Juolevi and Sautner will battle for first call up duties. On the right side, assuming Tanev is re-signed and Tryamkin is indeed signed, then I can't see us keeping Stecher at his price tag. I just can't see us also having Hughes, Rathbone and Stecher in one lineup. So Tryamkin gets the bottom pairing spot with Rafferty and Brisebois battling for the extra spot (unless we have 2 extra dmen). I'm also comfortable with Rathbone getting time in the AHL while Brisebois gets promoted internally. I think Brisebois may have to go through waivers next year, so he might get a look or will have to sneak him down. Edler-Myers Hughes-Tanev Benn-Tryamkin Brisebois/Rathbone-Rafferty Brisebois/Rathbone-Chatfield Juolevi-Woo Teves/Sautner-Eliot From this breakdown, we need some RD depth. We even have Utunen as an LD prospect as well. There is Josh Maniscalco available from NCAA still who is RD or maybe there's some CHL overager available if we want to add more depth. -
If people are socially distanced in the stands, I don't see why masks would be mandatory in the seats. I imagine the concourse and the like would be where it would be mandatory. I mean they've gotta be expecting you to buy food and beer and how else would you be able to indulge without taking your mask off. Less people spilling beer on you too. It's definitely going to take an adjustment period to see what works and what doesn't. Perhaps less yelling and utilize other noisemakers of some sort. For the BC Lions (and Whitecaps) at least, I think they could get the same amount of fans they normally get by opening the upper deck at BC Place.

Edler isn't getting any younger. Not saying that Juolevi would replace him directly, but we will need to fill that gap eventually. Juolevi has been groomed to take on PK duties though and has decent offensive instincts.

The name that pops into my mind when you're describing him is Keith Ballard. The pre-Canuck version (in which is what I hope we are getting). Similar build, willing to step up and be physical, good offensive instincts with a decent shot. Ballard needed to improve his defensive game which Rathbone hopes to do as well, so hopefully we get the complete version.

Injury Prone NHL Draft Picks With Successful Careers
theo5789 replied to Pbhatti00's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Off the top of my head, I believe Thomas Hickey is an example. Started off rough and had a respectable 450 game career. -
Maybe he didn't swing that way....wait what are we talking about?

[Signing] Canucks sign Jack Rathbone
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Let's not get into this again in this thread. Got to keep the positive vibes in this thread and not let the unnecessary drama creep in. Apparently the whole process of getting Jack signed was positive. Very fitting to Jack's character and what this team has been building. -
So anyone that disagrees with you is a Benning fanatic?

So it wasn't fulfilled when we acquired JT Miller? I believe JB's press conference specially mentioned that this move allows us to continue moving forward with the playoff drive and to not be discouraged from the loss of Boeser from the lineup (who was expected to be out until the playoffs and even into the playoffs).

This right here is what is important about the Toffoli trade. We made a deal to replace a top 6 forward who we thought was going to be out for the season and possibly some of the playoffs. We made this move to try and keep the playoff dream alive after the good run this team had up to that point and didn't want the team to be discouraged losing an important player. That was the value of the trade. Hopefully we make the playoffs and thus paying off the trade in full. Re-signing him was always going to be a bonus (like most rentals) and with Boeser, he's simply a luxury add to the team if we can unload the unwanted cap or if he signs a very reasonable team deal with us (which requires him to buy into what we are building which is what we have heard from Tanev and Marky so far and I've yet to really hear from Toffoli). IMO we have bigger fish to fry that holding up more cap at wing where we are rich with prospects and players fighting for spots. We don't need to "save face" on the trade by re-signing him. It seems like many would suggest that the 10 games he played here isn't enough to assess him, but many seem stuck on these 10 games thinking he's the answer to our problems (which lay elsewhere IMO).

A couple of things that bother me regardless if this rumour is true or not. Stop going on the cap dump tangent. There was nothing in the rumour in regards to cap reasons. That was stemmed from a (anti-Benning) poster stirring the pot who threw out tweets from non-sources. There is absolutely no reason to be upset with management over this issue even if the initial rumour is true. We are not potentially trading Boeser to resolve cap issues. The other thing is the trade deadline/freeze thing. Again, nothing of the initial rumour stated that we are looking to potentially trade him at this moment. Even Sekeres himself has added to his original rumour that he isn't being actively shopped or anything and it was simply being discussed. Stop trying to make management look incompetent as if they don't know that they couldn't trade him now. Exploring trade possibilities could be part of a 5 year plan or something where they are considering his next contract and whether we could keep the whole gang together and what would be best moving forward. That is simply management doing it's job. All this could possibly mean (if it's true) is that Boeser may not be in the long term core and that's part of managing the team and identifying who are the real key pieces to the team to build around. At some point, you have to make hard decisions on when to cycle through your players if you want to sustain success. The ones that are going on about these things are either anti-management or simply ignorant of the situation going on. Management isn't a shortsighted as some of the posters on here.

[Signing] NYI sign Sorokin to ELC & 1 year 2M extension
theo5789 replied to mll's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Another thing to consider is that because of the different style, they would have to face different traffic in front of the goal. But that's also why I brought up the back-ups' numbers which are very similar to the starter. Being in a good system (which NYI has) or being on a better team than most of the competition generally leads to inflation of stats. I still think Sorokin will be a good goalie, but I'm not as wowed by the stats when looking more than just at the surface of it. -
[Signing] NYI sign Sorokin to ELC & 1 year 2M extension
theo5789 replied to mll's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's probably a good goaltender, but I suspect his stats are a bit inflated. I think he's simply on a very stacked team in a league that doesn't have the same parity that it does in the NHL. This past season, he's only averaging about 20 saves again and the year before was about 18 saves a game. Doesn't seem like he faces a whole lot of action if there are any games that he saves say 30 shots, it averages out that he faces some games with like 10 saves then. Now what's beneficial is that NYI has a system that is quite suffocating, but even Varlamov was making 25 saves a game average facing some of the best in the world. I'd be curious to see how Sorokin is facing better competition and more action. Another thing of note is to look at the back-ups' stats. https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=96821 Pretty comparable to Sorokin for a 33 year old goalie. You'd think if he was that good that an NHL team would give him a shot. He did get a shot in the AHL though and looked far more human. -
Considering that the NHL is pushing a return mainly for monetary purposes likely to cover the TV contracts, it's no wonder that they have to appease to them. This was probably the "snag" in the Vancouver bid as we weren't going to declare them "essential service" during the conference finals and finals.
