  1. This signing period really only affects ELCs I believe in that they can burn that first year of ELC. We could sign Tryamkin at any time basically, he just won't be available to play for this play-in/playoffs.
  2. It's certainly a good time to showcase himself. I still wouldn't go north of 5.5 as it's too short of a window. Many players play harder on UFA years. I like Toffoli and I'm comfortable with him being the top line RW, but it only makes sense if he's giving us a better deal than Boeser to make him more enticing to keep as it would be beneficial cap-wise. Career numbers (at least the past 3 seasons) will come into play when it comes contract talks IMO. I like to hear more on if Toffoli actually wants to be here. If he plays lights out for us to get a UFA contract offer elsewhere, then the traded value is paid off IMO so I'm not concerned if he walks. If he wants to be here, then hopefully he works with the team and gives us something reasonable to work with to build the best team possible.
  3. Unfortunately it was only a 10 game stint. Just not enough to command a big paycheque based on historical numbers. Perhaps you're right that he could hit that number, but you don't pay in advance for that. 5.5 is the absolute max I would consider for him though. If he's going to get the same dollars as Brock, I'd easily keep Brock (if it had to be a choice of one or the other).
  4. Yes moving his cap was beneficial in getting their team in compliance to start the season, but he was not a player that they wanted to lose. They later used our pick (on top of adding a highly touted prospect in Nolan Foote) to try and get a supposed cheaper version of Miller in Coleman. They paid a higher price than we did to replace a player they wished they could've kept. Could we have played hardball to try and take advantage of their situation? Possibly, but that runs the risk of losing out on the player altogether. We made a deal that benefitted both sides and thus a hockey trade, which is more common now (there is an article about it somewhere). We clearly paid less to acquire the better player, so clearly we actually got the upper hand in value (the season Miller had is simply gravy at this point). This was also demonstrated in the Toffoli trade. Toffoli cost cheaper than Coleman (and was the best player traded at the deadline), but Coleman has an extra year on a good contract. Miller had 4 years on a good contract when we traded for him as well, which is further added value to us. So yes Miller was expendable to them (aren't all trades of players that were deemed expendable?), but he was far from a useless dump.
  5. Well I disagree with the statement that it's all luck anyway. I give them more credit than that and they will sort it out. Worst case scenario for me is they simply lose out on say a Toffoli. The situation does not seem as dire. Could it be better? Of course, every team will have contracts they rather not have, but you simply make do with what you have and we have yet to lose anyone due to cap, so we will see when that happens, if it does. This is why Gear was promoted. If his job was easy, he wouldn't be needed. If we lose a "core player" like Brock, it's because we are adding a core piece elsewhere in the lineup, we aren't dumping him. If management isn't always trying to improve the team, then they aren't doing their jobs and planning out different scenarios is where the skill comes in and that's simply them doing their jobs. To bring it back to Brackett/Benning and the draft, that's why the scout team creates a draft list of their own and try to predict others rather than picking out a singular player they must have, so they are ready for whatever comes their way no matter how it plays out. Luck plays a part, but skill is done in the preparation.
  6. Why would the Cup win be an asterisk? I can see them giving an asterisk if the playoffs could not be played at all and decided to hand the cup to the best regular season team or something. If it's because the season got shortened, then would that mean all awards will be asterisked as well? I doubt any awards will get that and the playoffs will still generally be played in full. The playoff seedings have had changes throughout the span of the NHL and all were awarded Stanley Cups without any asterisks. Whatever the case, I agree that it doesn't matter how we win the Cup, just win it.
  7. They saying goes, you need to be good to be lucky. So you must admit JB has been good despite being "lucky". With that said, calling someone lucky means nothing, but it's obvious you meant it as a slight. But I have to say this, any successful GM needs to be lucky. Teams that win the Stanley Cup need everything to align right at the same time and hope the moves made work out that season. So if JB has simply been lucky, I just hope it continues as things have been working out regardless of how things got that way.
  8. While Patrick White was the general return people remember, SJ had no intention on signing him and at the time were compensated with a 2nd round pick in 2012 which ended up being Chris Tierney. So while we may have gotten him for "cheap", this is more similar to us acquiring Miller. Now with that said, I don't think we need to concern ourselves with leverage. Worst case scenario is we don't sign Toffoli. We are getting value for Boeser if we are indeed trading him. We are not trading Boeser for cap relief. We are simply discussing options, it's far from a conclusion that we are looking to trade him and certainly not putting him on the block.
  9. It's been stated several times by Sekeres himself that Boeser isn't being shopped. If the rumour is even true, it's simply management discussing potential options for the team. That has nothing to do with wanting to trade him this instant, but planning the future. It's called managing a hockey team.
  10. Talk about missing the point, wow. When did I say we are trading Boeser with the reason being to "accomodate/promote" these players? I'm saying that it could potentially help in an area of weakness for us and we have the depth that could potentially step up (in which we don't have on RD). It's not an unreasonable option to consider even if there's a minor chance of it even happening at all. The Toffoli trade was an attempt to keep the playoff push alive. Boeser was thought to be out for the rest of the season. He was literally acquired to replace him with the potential of him walking at the end of this in hopes that we could get to the playoffs. There was likely no intention for both Boeser and Toffoli to be in the lineup at the same time except if they made a deep playoff run, but Boeser recovered quicker than expected and we had the cap space to fit them in and made it work. For the cost to acquire the best "rental" on the market at below the average value of players getting dealt at the deadline, it was a minor price to pay. We still have a chance for the playoffs and if we do make it, then it is worth the price we paid, re-signing him is simply gravy if we can afford that luxury. Getting to the playoffs after the year that they had so far would give our young core that experience (not short sighted). Assessing every scenario, even the tough ones, is simply preparing for all scenarios (not bad management). The rest of the season hasn't been played out yet and no trades has happened yet, no need to overdramatize everything over rumours that management has been having discussions.
  11. Yes and no. Timing the drafting and development of players to fit this group perfectly is the challenge. So while what you're saying may be true, it's difficult and not the only route. Say hypothetically, we trade Boeser and upgrade the defense. You have a hole in the top 6, but someone like Virtanen could break out in a bigger role. Someone like Podkolzin could come in later in the year and fit right in and take off after a couple of pro years in the 2nd best men's league. Maybe Lind continues his profession in development and finds a groove. So in a sense, we have already drafted and potentially developed a "replacement" in the top 6 while it's very tough to say we have that solution at RD (I'm hopeful for Tryamkin though). Either way, there's no one route to make the playoffs and that's why I have no problem with the discussion that management may have to consider a Boeser trade. It's simply management covering their bases. In the end, we could still go with this group, but I still believe that defense and goaltending will need to be addressed before Toffoli as he's a luxury piece considering the same argument above in regards of a top 6 potential replacement in the system already.
  12. Hockey will likely never be the same as that era again. Good entertainment-wise, but not great health-wise for the players. Seeing more skill is pretty entertaining as well though. I'm fine with the uppers policing if they did it fairly and consistently, but that is a big ask. So with that said I agree that the players should probably be protecting each other and to an extent that also keeps players safer. The ads don't bother me as long it doesn't become like the Euro leagues.
  13. Oh the list can certainly go on. I only mentioned those teams as those were in the discussion. Playoffs are hard to achieve now where half the league doesn't make it every year. You could be a decent team, as brought up even just above .500 hockey still doesn't get you there (thanks loser point). Missing 4 straight years isn't pleasant, but isn't horrible when considering our progress over that time. Many are simply too spoiled or too impatient and ignore what's in front of them. They prefer to blow things up, fire the GM/coach and what to start the process over again. This is exactly how those poor teams are managed (constant management change and and change in philosophies) and are ridiculed for and yet that's how they want things done here (it does make me question if they are truly fans of ours or are they really that ignorant of what's going around in the league).
  14. We only need to dump enough cap to sign Tanev, Marky and hopefully Toffoli. Don't see a need to dump that much cap. That is too much of a rebuilding move which just doesn't seem like it's the direction we are heading in. I'd almost rather sell a 1st for a team to take LE as it would resolve pretty much all of our issues, plus maximize our team. This is something Ottawa may be interested in as well though.
  15. And what if we win a Cup the next season with a better balanced lineup? Oh wait, who am I kidding, you're right, some fans would still continue to never let it go.
  16. 22+ minute dman that plays in all situations and is a 35-40 point dman on a team with a pretty anemic offense (and is signed for 4 more years at only 4.1 million which is a great contract for any top 4 RD). He's not a #1 dman, but he's been their de facto #1, sort of like Edler has been for us for the majority of his career. His +/- doesn't look great, but that could be a reflection of the team he's on and the reliance on him facing top opposition nightly (Edler's +/- dipped during our poor years). Very similar to Ristolainen (for those who think he's a "pylon" or "sucks'). Podkolzin may also never reach his potential, so I take it you would make the trade and add to it as well to get a more proven player?
  17. So would you trade Podkolzin+ for say Severson? You realize that Dobson just turned 20 in January, was a recent #12 overall pick, and he is getting minutes on a pretty deep NYI defense which is a position that much more easily exposed, right? There are plenty of Calder nominees (and winners) that also do not amount to much. Not saying that Boeser is that, but that title doesn't mean much beyond the rookie season. Plenty of incredible players never come close to a Calder. I'll give you that he is indeed a top 20 RW offensively, but defense (and centers) always have relatively higher values than wingers. You are comparing the players as of today ignoring potential. If that is true, then I would assume you would make that trade at the top of this post.
  18. If we can keep the entire gang together, great. But there is a reality that we may not be able to. IMO, Toffoli is the luxury piece to the team and our remaining cap should be focused more on areas of need like defense and goaltending that saved our behinds several times. We may have other wingers that could step up given the opportunity and would be cheaper. Him being a rental doesn't matter to me because rentals happen every year, so as long as Toffoli gets us to the playoffs, then that's the value paid. Other teams paid more value for their rentals, it's just the way it goes.
  19. Yeah I wasn't suggesting that the Devil's make that trade, just saying in terms of value. I don't think we can afford Barrie (nor am I too interested in acquiring him), but yes that is another route that could be taken.
  20. Seth Jones is a #1 dman, not a chance Boeser is even close to that conversation. Severson on the other hand is probably pretty close in valuation.
  21. And what makes you think Noah Dobson is even available? Would you trade Quinn Hughes for say Ehlers? I get that you don't rate Risto highly (and that's fine as that's your opinion), but you're not being realistic in your valuation of Brock. If you want Dobson, you're adding a significant amount with Brock to attain him if NYI wants to part with an ELC dman that is younger and helps with their own cap issues.
  22. You're massively oversimplifying it. First of all, who could've predicting a pandemic would halt everything? Were you able to predict that we would only get 10 games? Likely not, so we were acquiring him to finish the year and hopefully some playoffs games (in which we may still get this year). So what if we were struggling just before the pandemic? Toffoli had 10 points in 10 games, so he was contributing and we would've been far worse off without him and without Boeser at that time. We weren't giving up and management backed the team up and the players will appreciate that. Just see how the players feel in Buffalo with their management. The hype for prospects is always high. Just like how our players are so overvalued in potential trade proposals. Madden was a decent prospect in which why he has value in a trade, but he certainly has his flaws too. This hasn't changed from before the trade or after.
  23. Yeah and it's unfortunate that when reasoning and explanation is brought out, they simply respond with "wow some fans are crazy" or "yeah that player sucks" without anything to back up their claims. And it's too often that I hear complaints about a player and they respond with "yeah I don't follow them (or the team) at all", but they have a firm opinions made already. I believe the term for fans that flip based on how the team is performing are called bandwagoners. When this team starts peaking, they will surely flip to saying how they were right about everything because of course that will be when the vet contracts are off the books and prospects start filing in. This is what many of us are suggesting is the plan all along, but they will claim that JB is finally listening to what they've been saying supposedly and that's why the team has changed direction. They don't understand the groundwork and are impatient (yet the same likely want us to tank more years to get more "key" pieces).
  24. They complain about JB's work and yet when he's doing the job of GM which includes planning all scenarios, then it's also a problem. They automatically assume Boeser is a cap dump when even the original rumour didn't state so, but rather some anti-Benning crowd started this and it has carried on. Some are already setting the value of Boeser extremely high, so if it does come down to a trade happening, they're already going to be disappointed and ready to dump on Benning no matter what happens.
