  1. Yes I am okay letting Toffoli walk. Madden is good, but massively overrated here. His rental value was lower than what was given up during the TDL and he was probably the best one on the market. We will get the play-in still and hopefully a bit of a playoff run and he will be worth the value we gave up already. Being able to re-sign him is gravy and a luxury. Toffoli is in a position of strength for us (lots of depth and youth). I think goaltending (which saved us many times this year) and defense are priorities to stabilize.
  2. Stecher won best dman that year because we had colossal injury issues and he stepped up that year. The fact that he's being "pushed out" means the quality of defense has gotten better. However I agree that popular players here are generally overvalued, so their expected return will always be disappointing compared to real world values.
  3. Miller had a career high 56 points prior to joining us. He had 72 points playing with EP. Toffoli had 10 points in 10 games. Food for thought. To be clear, I'm not advocating trading Boeser. I think we can manage our cap (although potentially losing Toffoli) and I am fine with that too. However, if we consider going down this route and we upgrade on RD, I am fine with that option as well.
  4. They aren't looking to move him, there are discussing options and pretty much everyone but EP, QH and Bo are fair game for discussion at this point. The so called rumour doesn't even suggest we are considering trading him for cap reasons, that's all on the Benning hate crew spewing that garbage. Toffoli just turned 28 recently. He isn't a dinosaur yet. We have Podkolzin who's likely a top 6er sooner than later. We give Jake a shot in the meantime. MacEwen and Lind can try and earn more time seeing an opening. Plus in my suggested trade idea, we would be getting younger and IMO upgrading on defense. Both Boeser and Tanev have their injury concerns while Toffoli (and Risto) do not. Not sure how this is seen as poor asset management. At some point we will have to dip into our prospect pool and tough decisions will have to be made to improve the team. These are the signs of a good team building depth where you can trade from a position of strength to fill a weakness.
  5. Just an FYI in case you missed it, the January start is old news now. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/29431331/nhl-targeting-dec-1-start-2020-21-season
  6. So if we sign Toffoli to fill that top 6 role (and promote from within for the other top 6 spot, say Virtanen moves up and MacEwen enters the lineup full time with Podkolzin bumping out someone when he joins) for say 5 million and trade Boeser for RD help, we could potentially save about a million and improve the roster. Laughable to consider indeed.
  7. The far less important players are also the lesser valued players. If we trade Boeser, it wouldn't be a cap dump (but we would get a nice return if so), it would be to improve a position of weakness with a position of strength.
  8. Predicted this would be said a couple pages back, maybe I could be a TSN insider as well!
  9. Alex Edler (who has been our de facto #1 dman for the majority of his career here) was -39 for a season too. I hope this isn't the only thing you're looking at when assessing him.
  10. Back in February, we didn't have Toffoli which has caused a ripple (or a tidal wave) in all of this. With Toffoli, it changes the dynamic of the conversation where he's an option as a replacement and some who are hell bent on us needing to save face from the trade supposedly. But yes, when we the conversation shifts to us being able to trade good players, that means the team has shifted to a better place.
  11. But you also have to add the return of trading Brock in the trade too. Toffoli has looked good with Petey as well and could be signed for say 5 million and you're saving in cap for a winger that has won a Cup before. Say we trade Boeser for Risto, then we save another 400k-ish and we would be bolstering the roster plus saving over a million in cap (which is worth gold right now). The only thing piss-poor has been the thought process of all of this.
  12. Oh I'm well aware. I'm not trying to convince him/her. I'm trying to give some reasoning to all this so when others read, they don't fall into that trap.
  13. If stagnant cap is an issue and we are supposedly trying to dump Boeser's cap, who's going to be able to afford him? The reality is that in a stagnant cap world, it'll most likely be more of a hockey trade either offsetting the cap while helping the needs of both sides or it'll be minor cap fluctuations. Either that or we will be getting some high picks/prospects for Boeser like we did when we acquired Miller (except Boeser is younger and has had better numbers at a younger age). So we are getting a good return either way, but yet I feel like people are thinking we are going to dump him for a 7th round pick or something. I find it funny that Benning is criticised endlessly for his contracts and now when it comes to Boeser, it's a "friendly" contract. No credit to Benning for actually signing him to this "friendly" deal in the first place.
  14. So based on the other tweet in which you haven't highlighted, this is no more than us discussing trading Boeser like we have over this entire past year even before he signed his contract. Trading Boeser is always an option in talks, that's not news, and especially not blown out of proportion once again like it has. In discussions, all of those said players are also likely being discussed as trade options, but there's no headline for that.
  15. Fair enough, it's close though. Close enough that it isn't going to bother me either way the +/- in likely lesser picks/prospects go.
  16. Let's say hypothetically we re-sign Toffoli for 5 million a season. Trade Boeser for Risto (try to sneak in a small cap dump like Benn or Sutter for a pick). Don't re-sign Tanev or Stecher. Add Tryamkin. Toffoli comes in slightly cheaper than Boeser in the top 6 for minor cap savings and we have an RD group of Risto, Myers and Tryamkin. I personally think that's an upgrade on the team while shifting the cap spent of the supposed big 3 UFAs (of course I'm assuming we re-sign Marky in this case).
  17. I think we need to not overvalue Boeser here. A top 4 young-ish RD is generally worth more than a top 6 winger simply due to the position. I see us actually needing to add a bit more for someone like Risto. Dumba would be straight up and Parayko, we would have to add something of significant value back IMO. Possibly straight up for Pesce or they add a bit, but Slavin would be pricey possibly above Parayko value. So in terms of valuation Pesce<Boeser/Dumba<Risto<Parayko<Slavin is how I personally see it.
  18. This doesn't even make sense. He's already facing criticism for this rumour. So clearly he isn't avoiding any criticism either way. If Benning is wanting to move Boeser, it's because he feels it'll improve the team. What's next? We want to trade Boeser because he is supposedly a Brackett pick and Benning hates everything to do with Brackett?
  19. Dhaliwal is reporting what Sekeres is saying, but I guess that how they corroborate each other? Perhaps this isn't to save face, but maybe Toffoli has shown to be a good fit in the top 6 and they could actually get value from Boeser in a trade to bolster an area of weakness (have to trade something good to get something good back)? What a terrible thought.
  20. First, Dahlen was considered Petey's best friend. Now the rumour is BB may be traded. Perhaps the moral of the story is don't be Petey's best friend!
  21. First of all, it's a rumour from Sekeres of all people. Secondly, not all rumours are even true (not much news to talk about in Canuck land right now). And thirdly, if we are exploring trading Brock, it's not because we are dumping his cap (but if we were JT Miller got a golden 1st round pick back, so there's that), it's because we are trading from a position of strength (potentially re-signing Toffoli, Virtanen is on the bubble of a top 6 spot, we have Podkolzin coming as soon as next season, want to give MacEwen a full time spot, etc) to likely a position of weakness (most likely RD). I don't want to trade Brock, but there is reasoning to it.
  22. Or perhaps JB knew there would be some tough years to stock the cupboards and loaded up on some placeholder vets for insulation and competition. And with grand slams in EP and QH, it has allowed us to turn that corner to make more aggressive moves in pursuit of the playoffs and get over that hump. Our core players are mostly here, but are not yet the veterans of the group, but they will be conveniently when those "long in the tooth" players' contracts start expiring and can be replaced with the youth that we have in the system. I'm not concerned about us being in the "longest playoff drought in franchise history" because 1) it isn't exactly a long drought and 2) we have been trending in the right direction over this period and do not look like we will be turning back any time soon.
  23. The comparisons to those teams is not due to their similarities, but rather how bad things could be otherwise. All I'm reading here is sheer impatience. What the vets are doing now is allowing the youth to simmer long. The effects are to be seen when the young core emerges as the vets of the group. The oldest of the "young" group is Horvat who just turned 25 and he didn't have the sheltering that others have gotten at the start of his career. To note, JT Miller just have a break out year at age 26. We have missed the playoffs for 4 years with our team trending up in the standings in each of those years. The team wants to win and management is supporting them. We are on track to pass the previous season and thus we continue "heading in the right direction". The entire season has been full of ups and downs, so who knows how we would've ended the season. We are technically a playoff team in points percentage when the season came to a halt. If making the playoffs is the standard, then we are almost there and still have the opportunity to get there. If you want to compare to Colorado, they were out of the playoffs for 6 of 7 years before making it back to the playoffs (we have missed 5 of 6 so far with this year unknown so far). They've had the luxury of getting a 1st overall in MacKinnon, something we as a franchise have never had. Chicago missed the playoff 9 out of 10 years before locking in a couple of top 3 picks. Tampa missed the playoffs 5 out of 6 years before their turnaround and they've netted a 1st overall pick as well, plus the luxury of their taxes. Pittsburgh missed the playoffs for 4 years, like basement level and almost losing their franchise, before netting a couple of top 3 picks. Right now we are much closer to these teams than we are to Edmonton (missed playoffs 12 of 13 times with several top picks), Buffalo (missed the last 9 years including this one already), and Arizona (missed 7 years before a chance this year). We haven't gotten any draft lottery luck and in fact when we started our downward fall was when the league change the lottery rules to make it harder for us to get the top 3 picks. We have had to earn our "luck" in getting EP and QH. Philly isn't exactly a beacon of success to compare to and even then they "won" the draft lottery one year and tanked their pick. Things are way more positive than how you are seeing things it seems.
