The season has gone pretty much exactly as expected. Couldn't predict the ups and downs of the season, but we are right in that wildcard bubble which is a continuation of our upward trend over the last couple of years.

I don't get why some think Benning is hanging onto LE to save face. It's like they truly believe Benning isn't trying to make this team the best it possibly can. These people clearly play too much EA sports and think it's so simple. I agree that his play has dropped off and he's not simply floating. His defensive work and his ability on that stretch with Pearson and Horvat that was one of our more effective lines was true to that effort. He isn't worth his contract for sure and no teams are chomping at the bit to take him and we don't want to use assets to unload him as long as we are able to manage the cap with him and we had done so this past season. People think it's so easy to just waive him and believe he will retire. He might, but what if he does report? You're only saving just over a million in cap in which you have to replace him with a player which basically negates that savings anyway (unless you go with a minimum wager and save 300k or so). Then you have the drama which the media will create or fan the flames on continuously, is that worth it? He could walk away from his contract after his bonus, but he isn't going to making that kind of money on another team given his age and play and the current market, so I don't think it's going to be that simple to remove him unless there's a compliance buyout (which sounds like it won't happen).

[Report] Lias Andersson requests trade from Rangers
theo5789 replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Stecher's money next season for us is currently $0. Not sure how much of that we could spend on re-signing Tanev. Andersson doesn't seem to fit the bill of the type of player/character we have been looking for (he seems like he has a bit of a Dahlen type mentality), so not sure if there's even any interest from us at this point. If he isn't in their plans anymore, then perhaps they could be interested in a vet that help now with their young group like Sutter along with a prospect like Gadjovich maybe. -
Hopefully his mates bought him a few beers after getting lit up in the NHL in that one game
-
I think the key word is "mutual" here. If the Canucks could trade him, surely they would. If we could simply terminate the contract, then we probably would if he isn't in our plans any longer (we would've done it with other players as well surely if it were that easy) because why pay them for nothing? I think Palmu's side knows that he likely isn't cracking any NHL rosters, so is he willing to toil in the AHL for another team for a couple more years assuming he even gets a look? He likely isn't going to get a better contract with any European team, so he's likely just collecting his paycheque at this point. A 6th round overager pick that is 5'6 playing in Finland and not even the best player on his team isn't likely to be getting a lot of attention where he's comfortable passing up on the guaranteed money. Just sounds like another type of post that assumes that Canuck management is always in the wrong.

You're right that his PPG play has exceeded all of our expectations. However, everything else that he has brought was exactly as advertised. He was surely a top 6 player for us (despite many criticisms of him was that he as a bottom 6 player). Many of us believed he would be a 60 point guy (over a full season) in this top 6 role with us with some optimism that he could be a 70 point guy playing alongside someone like EP and Boeser. Let's remember that we didn't have many 60 point guys prior to his arrival so it was always going to a welcomed offensive boost (however many same his previous 47 point season, in 3rd line minutes no less, and considered him to be "regressing" already. So with that expectation, we also looked at his contract and with 4 years and 5.25 million for a top 6 player is a pretty darn good contract, another added value here. Yes this is expensive for a 3rd liner in which he was for Tampa, but it was more an abundance of riches for them rather than them trying to "dump" him. This is where I think the idea of a cap dump is debated, where some think they should've paid us to take him like in other cap dump type deals. I think we found out he was available and jumped on it. We could've played games to try and lower the price, but it also could've opened up to other teams and potentially driven his price up. Another example here is when we traded Toffoli pre-trade deadline. Many still think we overpaid here as well, but had we waited until the TDL, we can see the prices were much higher than what we gave up. As you've mentioned, we scouted him as a player that fit into the system we wanted. Miller was good a retrieving pucks and finding open players. This is something he had done in Tampa on their PP mainly, but we used him similarly in 5v5 play as well. He could play all forward positions, most importantly center, and he has proven that being our 2nd most used player on faceoff duties and is tops in FO win%. Because of this, many of us had pegged him even prior to the start of the year with Pettersson (who is weak on faceoffs currently) and would support him while others had pegged Ferland in the same spot instead. Which also adds that Miller could play that physical game and also stand up for EP and others, which was also something that we lacked in our top 6. On top of all of this, Miller could PK as well, so he was known to be defensively responsible as well and was an added asset there when needed. So yes a 1st is always a high price to pay, but it was also somewhat protected. The ones who thought we had a fighting chance at the playoffs this season felt confident we were going to at least hit the playoffs no later than next season, where many of the ones that were disparaging the trade kept mentioning how we would lose a top 10 pick (which there was potential, but would've taken a pretty colossal collapse in the direction we were headed in especially with the addition of Miller). So we were almost always looking a bottom half of the 1st round pick where the odds of a potential HHOF player would get picked up and likely a player of Miller's calibre would be on the high end of the spectrum at that range anyway. So we got the player now to help our young core get to the next level instead waiting a couple more years down the road on a hope for a player like Miller. I think value-wise at the time of the trade, it was fine (it wasn't a steal, but nowadays GMs mostly make hockey trades and it's very rare to have majorly lopsided trades where one side swindles another). The fact that he has far exceeded our expectations (points-wise and in his leadership in which I didn't expect) is only gravy on the top.

He does get connected on the head though (although not principle point of contact), but I agree that he may have sold any injury he had. That doesn't take away that Hoglander should've been smarter and not taken himself out of an important game like that.
-
If Hoglander bodies him rather gets his elbows up, then it's a clean play that still likely knocks him over. It doesn't look like Denisenko was engaging to hit him and his attempt at avoidance is what would shift his balance to be easy to knock down. I disagree that it was a dive, but he may have sold the severity of the hit.

Panic first, hope to be wrong later (or hope they are right to prove a point even if it's detrimental to the team).

Great NHL players don't always make great coaches, just ask Gretzky. With that said, I think Mitchell might make a decent coach, but he doesn't seem to have any resume here on any sort of professional level, so tough to assume he could jump to the top level suddenly.
-
When did he get hurt in juniors? Unless you're talking about the games he missed during the season because he was off playing at the highest junior level in the World Junior Championships. He wasn't "injury prone" prior to us drafting him. There was no way of knowing this was the way it would play out prior to drafting him, so yes hindsight is definitely required. And as have been pointed out, he could still make a career still. What he has also proven since he was drafted is that some of this fanbase is very impatient.

[Report] Chris Tanev, Canucks want new contract
theo5789 replied to peaches5's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Edler is 34 and is still leading the team on defense. He's only just starting to have his PP time reduced, but still heavily relied upon on the PK and 5v5. No reason to believe Tanev cannot continue to play at his level especially when it's his smarts that is praised for which doesn't deteriorate as fast and can be used to adjust his game when the physical attributes start wearing down. Not to say I would give him a huge contract, but he would contribute towards our development on a 3 year contract and sign on for cheaper on 1 year deals and then subsequently have his minutes reduced over this time. -
[Report] Chris Tanev, Canucks want new contract
theo5789 replied to peaches5's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
How many games did we hit 7 goals last season without Toffoli? The offense is there but needs consistency for sure. The major reason we added Toffoli in the first place was to replace an injured Boeser at the time and Benning didn't want the team to lose morale from that injury announcement. Benning wanted to give the team the hope they could still make it (of course it didn't help when Marky got hurt). I'm not suggesting that Lind and Virtanen are equivalent replacements, but they are depth that could get looks and if we had to prioritize our cap, then I see Toffoli being the "luxury" piece that would be nice to have if we could afford it. Now I'm not expecting we go in with the same defense overall. I am hoping we add Tryamkin to the group. Love Stecher, but Tryamkin is an upgrade here (and on Benn as well). Losing a top 4 dman (a tough to replace RD as well) isn't going to help the situation especially when we specifically added Myers with the idea that we needed to add a top 4 RD. I'm curious who did you have in mind as the stop gap option that would cost significantly cheaper considering we wouldn't be able to afford Tanev and putting our money elsewhere. Brisebois is a LD, so he wouldn't even be a longer term solution here despite his game being similar to Tanev's style. -
[Report] Chris Tanev, Canucks want new contract

I think many underestimate Tanev's ability. Yes he's a defensive dman, but he makes the smart plays as well despite not putting up the points, just ask Hughes. Look at guys like Erik Karlsson without Methot. Karlsson gets all the accolades, but his partnership with Methot made them a good pairing. Tanev may not be this guy long term for Hughes, but it has worked. Tanev is far from a "stay at home" guy. I see Toffoli actually as a luxury. We have Boeser and Jake is progressing (not sure if he's ready for full time top 6 though). We have guys like Kole Lind coming up and Podkolzin could here as early as the end of next season looking for minutes too. Toffoli was a nice add, but I don't see it being imperative that we do need to re-sign him (I assume most that feel we must are mainly the only that feel that we have to re-sign him to justify the trade). If Tanev walks, who replaces him? There no one on the UFA market that's going to come in at a lower price tag of the same quality or better. Who's going to take on his hard minutes and partnership with Hughes? Is Tryamkin ready to jump into that role if he even signs? Rafferty's question mark is his actual defense. Jett Woo is a couple years away. Marky seems like a no brainer to sign and is likely the #1 priority. If we for some reason can come to terms with him, it is even more important that we bring back Tanev. We can't simply only focus on the offensive side of things and hopefully the goaltending bails us out every night. This is the problem that Toronto has and I bet they would love to have a guy like Tanev on their roster. They can't afford him either, but that's cause they put too much emphasis on the offense. -

Missed playoffs in 5 of 6 years (technically we haven't missed this year yet too, so possibly only 4 of 6). I'd argue we were hoping to retool for the first 2-3 years until they settled for a rebuild (I have my reasons for believing this, but don't think this is where I need to get into it unless you want to). A couple of home runs and now flirting with the playoffs is relatively short order in comparison to several teams in the league. This while we still have our "anchors" and the expectation of 7-8 more young players cracking the roster in the next couple of years (likely more in the future as well if we continue to find a decent player a draft). The "anchors" will go away in these next couple of years as well. I don't think we are over the top yet, but we are heading in the right direction and while I don't expect a Cup this year, I believe the experience (for development and assessment purposes) will be beneficial continuing the trend of our progress. I'm glad we are developing a winning culture and supporting those players that want to win regardless of whatever timeline anyone expects. -

The biggest move that the Coyotes made IMO was acquiring Kuemper. His play has allowed them to hone their new age trap system. But yes eventually teams may figure things out at some point and can make that turnaround. But while these teams have taken a decade to get back up, in comparison, we have bounced back in relative short order. I think the suggestion of waiting for us to be "ready for a serious run" before we even bother trying puts us closer to have this lingering stink when instead we have players on the team that want to win now and these types of players deserve to have the management backing them up. I can't say for sure our direction will lead to a Cup, but we don't want a losing culture built here as that will be very hard to overcome as shown with the many examples we have seen. -

All the more reason why Benning is trying to push us out of this funk rather than be concerned about adding more "prominent pieces" through the draft and waiting until we are "ready". Management is not gifting prospects spots even on poor teams and forcing them to earn it by beating out even mediocre UFA vet signings. I disagree that we are that similar to the Oilers and Buffalo though. Many disagree with our expensive veteran signings to shelter our, something that those teams had not done. We have not won a single 1st overall pick to expedite any rebuild and yet those teams have have been bottom of the barrel for nearly a decade. The Oilers are starting to bounce back now while the Canucks aren't far behind despite not being at the bottom for as long. I'm not going to be concerned about a pattern that may or may not exist yet. The evidence is in front of us where our team's drafting has been a stark contrast to pre-Benning times and the struggles to right the ship comes from rebuilding. IMO, we have turned this around relatively quickly especially when we are comparing to teams like Edmonton and Buffalo. -
[Report] Chris Tanev, Canucks want new contract
theo5789 replied to peaches5's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If it means staying in Vancouver where he wants to be and potentially retiring as a Canuck, then it would go a long way for accomplishing that. It would also potentially give him the opportunity to hit back to the UFA market that is less affected by Covid while playing alongside Hughes. I disagree that it does him no good. He certainly may want to cash in now, which is fair, but that may be elsewhere if his loyalties are to the money and not the team. I'd be curious at what teams are interested in him because teams weren't willing to pay up to acquire him previously, so would they pay the premium to acquire his services during these times? -

Definitely an agent trying to protect their interests over the team and player. Tanev said what he did and while he would like a long term deal, if they can't make something work, he will likely step in and tell his agent to shove it much like Edler did. If we can't afford Tanev, it's even less likely Toronto can. If Tanev really wants to stay in Vancouver, a one year deal doesn't force him to be exposed as we are unlikely to protect him if signed longer. -
He can still be picked as an RFA and then they would hold his rights. The reason why it works for UFAs is because they can simply deny signing with them during the UFA early window.

Fair enough that they have a fresh start with Holland. With that said, a team like Buffalo has gone through a couple of regimes now and it's much of the same. For some teams, it's hard to wash off that stink, but I guess we will see if Holland can turn it around. Getting rid of Lucic was a great first step for them. Development of their prospects will be an important next step. -

Their losing culture may have potentially disappeared when McDavid joined their team. I don't think Draisaitl gets to the next level without him IMO and would've fallen into the fate of Eberle, Hall and Yakupov. Will never know now. I have my doubts about McDavid taking them to the promised land (at least in Edmonton), but that's for another conversation. Aside from that one playoff drive, they've been back to top 10 pick in the draft level again. They were better this year, but not convincing enough to say their losing culture is done. Crosby and Malkin made two lines dominant. McDavid and Draisaitl require each other to form a dominant line. McDavid isn't strong on faceoffs and is kept away from the PK whereas both Malkin and Crosby are at the very least trusted there to take some shifts. So while proportionally of the cap, they are a smidge less, they aren't IMO as dominant of a top 2 center duo. Goaltending for the Oilers continues to be a weakness, whereas we have a steady Marky with Demko and DiPietro with potential to take over. I don't see a whole lot of promise there for the Oilers. They may have a couple good pieces coming up (Bouchard and Benson), but if Benning is correct, we may have 7 or 8 ready to go in the next couple of years alone. And as I mentioned, it's the drafting in the later rounds that will add the cheaper depth for us to build a deeper team. If they expect to compete, they won't be able to rely on Bouchard level players to fill their roster anymore.
