  1. Benning wants someone that wants to collaborate. He is perfectly fine with what Brackett brings and thus is trying to retain him. Sounds like Brackett is the one that doesn't want to collaborate. Not like Benning doesn't have any experience there or anything. If Brackett isn't interested in having Benning involved (in which he was and thus part of the success in our drafting rather than solely on Brackett), then he is in his right to try a new team willing to give him that. This doesn't take away from our drafting necessarily and seems to be unreasonable to jump to that conclusion. The next person will simply want to be a team player and respect higher management and will get the same respect back. Much like how things are run through this organization under Benning. Building character amongst this organization has actually been a strong point.
  2. I 100% agree that no picks are pinned (success or failure) to one single person. However if you follow this thread, you clearly see many people do not share this view. I believe that it is also a collaborative effort. Many are of the belief that if it ain't broke, don't fix it and that's why they feel it's a mistake to let Brackett walk. As it stands, Benning wants to keep Brackett and has extended him an offer, so he clearly values what he brings to the table. So sure Benning (and Weisbrod) want to be more involved in the scouting process (which is their background and thus likely their strengths), but it is Brackett that wants to walk away unless he gets more reign. It is not like Benning and crew weren't involved before, but they feel they have something to contribute here as well. This group has boosted our prospect pool together, but if Brackett wants out, I don't think it'll cripple us especially when considering that the general notion is that Brackett has a good record of college prospects and both Benning and Weisbrod have their connections in that area as well. Benning promoted Gear to help with those GM duties. A lot of critics have complained about our cap issues and he has brought in help in this area. This isn't to say that Benning is taking over the scouting department though and he certainly does trust his scouts and such and thus why he always references the picks as "we" got them. He knows it's a team effort as he was a scout himself, but he doesn't want to take himself out of that equation either.
  3. Let's break this down a bit if this is all said and true. Now this is just me trying to connect the dots, but who knows if it's true or not. Brackett is named director of amateur scouting in August 2015. The 2015 draft, we did pick up Boeser and Gaudette (who were potentially influenced by Brackett to select them and thus earned the promotion after the scouting staff was called out for missing Pastrnak in 2014). The 2016 nhl draft was one of our weaker drafts which includes the infamous Olli pick. So supposedly he had more autonomy during this time (yet Benning is the only one called out here). The 2017 draft, we nab Petey (in which DeLorme is praised for being adamant about, but of course our Swede scout Inge Hammarstrom initially brought him to our attention). Benning was beaming over him on the draft floor, so he completely bought into this pick. "Why hasn't anyone taken Kole Lind?" is infamous and thus quite clear to be someone that Benning liked. Not much info on Gadjovich. It can be noted for DiPietro that I believe Brackett mentioned in a later video that he likes picking goalies late as they have more time to develop and especially through the college system (when we took Thiessen in the following draft and his now amusing GAA from last season), so hard to say if Brackett was on board with taking DiPietro in the 3rd round (where Benning has been noted to comment on whether they should take a goalie in earlier rounds). We did get Rathbone and because of Brackett's collegiate background, he gets credited for this pick. However, I did mention in an earlier post that Weisbrod also has connections in the collegiate circles and he had drafted a player from Dexter High School when he was in Calgary, which is conveniently where Rathbone was from as well, food for thought. In 2018, Linden leaves after the draft, but have to imagine that things were in flux prior to that point already. We nabbed Hughes and Woo, who the draft floor team were all excited about. Tyler Madden looked to be a surefire Brackett pick and was pushing hard for him while Benning looked to trade down from that pick to add more picks. We of course trade Madden and that could be the breaking point for Brackett. Don't know who's involved with the Utunen pick. Brackett is shown to push for taking on the overaged mighty mouse Manyukan because he saw him in world junior (very similar to the Palmu pick, where also Gadjovich played, connection here?). And of course the aforementioned Thiessen pick. So by 2019, Brackett must've felt his duties have been diluted already over this time. The rumour about us changing our draft board prior to the Hoglander pick suggests that maybe he was more of a Benning pick. Most admit that our drafting has gotten better over time. Is it a coincidence that it has gotten better with Benning supposedly "diluting" Brackett's role? Brackett may have a decent track record in college at least if it's true that Boeser and Gaudette were brought up by him and Madden was a good pick, good enough to bring in one of the top TDL players. But how is his track record as a whole beyond that considering he was the director of amateur scouting and not simply a collegiate scout? We will never know who pushed for who (most picks likely came to a consensus rather than one guy stiff arming another although Benning got the final call), so this is all speculation. Where Brackett is strong in, we do have that experience from Weisbrod in that same area (IMO he played a part in getting Gaudreau to Calgary, even though he was hired like two or three days after the draft as an AGM). So we won't know how things will play out in the future, but I don't think we will be crippled losing Brackett.
  4. Fair enough and Van Gundy has said his biggest regret was trying to change Francis too much. He was hard on him and Francis didn't take it well I guess. At the end of the day, who else was offering a NBA all star (even with his baggage) for a player that was known that wanted out? It's a tough situation to be in, but it's not like Weisbrod decided to trade Mcgrady for no reason, he had to and he did what he could to try and bring an all star back. And as I mentioned, he could've went with a safer pick in Okafor to worry about his team now, but he went with higher potential in Howard for long term vision (which goes in line with some picks that we have made that took some riskier moves for the long term gain). Plus despite this supposed poor trade, he was able to get the Magic 15 games better than the basement season prior to his arrival (even with TMac) before he left basketball to follow his dream of hockey because he "would trade 3 NBA championships for one Stanley Cup". The Magic felt he did a good job there and Weisbrod left on his own terms, not let go from being a poor GM. Mcgrady may have had more individual achievements, but he didn't push that team any further.
  5. Like I said, Mcgrady wanted out. He had to do what he had to do and got an NBA all star at the time back who also wasn't in his prime yet (as they were around the same age). Mcgrady didn't accomplish much after he left and became injury riddled (something that is considered a nightmare on CDC). Neither team really won that trade, so can't see why it's such a big mar to his name when he actually improved the team by a significant amount that season even with the trade. I get that Francis is not well liked around here, but doesn't take away from the realities of the trade itself.
  6. Weisbrod was hired days after the draft. Is it a coincidence that Boston wanted him and yet Calgary snagged him and hired the guy in charge of collegiate scouting? We will never know, but it's interesting timing. Jankowski was also from college, so it's probably correct that he was likely a pick from Weisbrod, but it's not like they missed out on a gem around that 21st overall pick. That was a relatively weak 1st round that year and he's been a regular for them the last few seasons. It's made to seem as if he's far more atrocious of a player than he really is.
  7. Here's the ironic part. Jankowski was picked by the Flames, all Weisbrod's fault even though Jay Feaster was the GM (Tod Button was their director of amateur scouting). Canucks pick Pettersson, no credit to Benning, credit goes to everyone else supposedly that is leaving or has left. Weisbrod was a scout for Dallas for the New England region and he became a scout for Boston specializing in the collegiate area. He was named AGM of the Flames in 2011 (after winning the Cup with Boston as we all know) in which they drafted a player named Johnny Gaudreau out of college in the 4th round, but no credit here right? Perhaps he has connections in the area in which many believe Brackett was strong in as well. Calgary had drafted Tim Harrison, who may seem insignificant, but he was drafted out of Dexter High School and Jack Rathbone (buddies with Aidan McDonagh) came from that same high school, so is it a coincidence that there is some connected scouting in that region? Jay Feaster was also the GM of the O'Reilly situation and I guarantee that if it happened here, the GM (Benning) would never hear the end of it, not the assistants. That's not to take blame away from Weisbrod, but seems ridiculous that this is pinned on him directly without context. It was some confusion of the rules that even O'Reilly's agent didn't think it was an issue either. Not sure what the big deal is about the Mcgrady trade. Mcgrady asked to be traded. Francis was an NBA all star at the time and while he didn't do much after being traded, Mcgrady didn't accomplish a whole lot either (even though they made the playoffs, they were a playoff team already with Yao Ming, and still didn't get out of the first round with TMac). Weisbrod took over a bottom of the barrel Magic team and had improved them next season by 15 games despite this trade. He also took a high schooler in Dwight Howard when there was talk of Okafor being the safer pick. So a little context and research changes things I would say.
  8. So what I'm reading here is that Benning and crew have been very involved with our successful drafting since Brackett doesn't feel like he has enough autonomy.
  9. DeLorme is credited from being adamant about EP. His track record as head scout is atrocious though.
  10. Tanev on the PP? First unit too? Give me what you're smoking! First guy over the boards on the PK you mean right?
  11. I don't know if it's better hands, but I think his vision/hockey IQ is better and thus reads plays better. This, IMO, is what makes him good defensively already plus be able to feed nice passes into soft areas where players fly into.
  12. https://thecanuckway.com/2018/04/16/vancouver-canucks-scouts-ripped-for-missing-out-on-david-pastrnak/ Seemed more like the scouts then didn't do their job to identify Pastrnak. Benning ripped into them for missing him.
  13. Is it any surprise that someone that puts more weight into what someone in the media (JD Burke especially) has to say is so negative towards this team? What a shocker.
  14. I suppose the difference between our team and other teams is that Benning makes the wrong picks every time and every pick that pans out with 20/20 hindsight is credited to Brackett and his amazing single-handed scouting and stiff arming Benning into making his picks.
  15. So for sure, Quinn wasn't specifically a "Judd pick", we all know that. "We got our guy" is in reference to Jett Woo. Just prior to this comment, they mention how there are 3 players they want (assuming decided during their scout meetings) and are deciding if they should trade the pick if they are gone. Two of those options must've been gone which left Jett being the guy that if he got picked, then they would make the trade. Benning might've not remembered which school Madden was attending, but they likely discussed his name in the draft meetings. Judd's specific job is to bethe head scout and have this information on hand. Benning has more duties as a general manager, so the expectation for him to remember hundred's of players' information seems rather unfair as a judgement towards him. Whether it's Brackett or someone else, likely whoever the head scout will be is still going to in charge of gathering this information and retaining for the GM and thus why he is needed still on the draft floor. "It's up to Judd" is in reference to whether they should make a trade of much later picks (I believe 6th rounders). Nothing to do with the Madden selection. Details indeed.
  16. What a load of bull. Benning told the Hughes family that Quinn wasn't getting past their pick. That doesn't sound like someone that might've not been on board with the pick. Benning is constantly fist pumping after picks, so clearly even if they were "scout" picks that he was fully on board with them. And honestly that's the point of having a scouting department so that they can do their job and give input on several players to pick and have a draft board. Things are fluid especially after the 1st round and that why there are instances like "why has no one taken Lind yet?" Sometimes players you don't expect there are there and you may go against what the scouting meetings had planned.
  17. Lol JD Burke, does he still believe that the Miller trade was a bad trade? Isn't he the one that constantly criticizes our picks, specifically their skating only to have video clips shown of said players blowing past opponents with their speed? Has he once said anything positive about this organization? If so, I haven't read it, but I don't really bother to follow what he has to say anyway. But hey everything he says must be truth right? He names a bunch of people supposedly responsible for the Petey pick, but conveniently omits Delorme who also has been credited for the pick, but I guess he doesn't fit the negative rant. And surprise, draft boards change as picks go off the board, who would've thought? Yet Benning still making the final call goes for the supposed "scouts picks" as if they don't have meetings to discuss who they want and like which could be several players because who knows who will far to where in the latter rounds?
  18. How many thought this franchise was going downhill when Linden left and "Dim Jim" had more power? We have only gone up since (but of course this isn't because of Benning, it's on Brackett singlehandedly apparently). Brackett may have done a decent job, but if he isn't on board with us, then good luck to him elsewhere. We are drafting players for character that want to be a Canuck, this runs through the organization. We will be fine. It's not like our prospect pool is going to collapse and suddenly our drafting will diminish. Why is the assumption that if Brackett goes that it's all doom and gloom? Perhaps Benning will identify the next Brackett (considering he promoted him there in the first place). Let's not forget that as we continue to progress, we will have "lower" picks and thus the talent quality drops. So it's not going to be a surprise that we have higher end talent over the last few years comparatively to the next few years (but making the later round picks count where it's more of a crapshoot will be more telling). Context matters.
  19. He's likely a cheaper poor man's version of Barrie, so I think he sticks on the big club due to his ELC and their cap constraints.
  20. So this guy is the same stature as Larsen, led his team in points as a dman similarly to Larsen, and even plays on the same team when Larsen accomplished what he did. Larsen is a joke here apparently, but this guy is some game changer? He's likely a Barrie replacement for them and even then a poor man's version of the Barrie we saw last season. But hey the Leafs signed him, so here comes the hype train.
  21. Waiting for the moment @DeNiro gets it.
  22. I'm sure some teams considered the risk of him potentially using the out of heading back to the KHL at any point if things don't go his way as a negative. Also some teams perhaps feel they prefer to develop their players in their own system. But I think the big factor is that he wasn't putting up massive point totals, so some probably felt he's more like a 3rd line type player rather than a top 6 guy. Also based on the picks made, I think teams emphasized on centers and defense being the more valuable position. Thankfully they're mostly fools and letting Pod drop to us.
  23. Who is saying Fantenberg is better than Juolevi and based on what merit?
  24. It's funny how some people are so adamant about their opinion of Tryamkin while doing so very little research on him. Also funny that because so little research was done that they stick with what negatives they have heard 3 or 4 years ago and continue to run with it. I guess no one can mature or develop anywhere unless it's done in front of their eyes under their microscope.
