  1. Sorry Dhaliwal, but this is idiotic. What's the delay? Oh I don't know, a pandemic maybe? It was quite clear both sides are waiting to see what the cap situation will be first. What is Tryamkin's other option really? Go back to the KHL where they are financially flourishing more so than the NHL? Give me a break.
  2. As mentioned already, not a chance Marky signs a 1 year deal, but technically yes you're right.
  3. Not the greatest, but I imagine Anson Carter fits this criteria.
  4. Just goes to show how good the Sedins were to be able to give a highlight reel goal to a guy with 23 NHL goals to his name (the last of his career).
  5. I don't think any of these guys will be as popular as Gino and thus I considered that as legendary. Tiger had a legendary moment riding the stick. Of course this is only of the opinion which started more around the 90s Canucks.
  6. 4.5 would be an amazing dollar amount. He may require a full NMC if that's the case.
  7. I don't think that's how it works, you can protect one goalie only, all others eligible will be exposed. So Demko will still be exposed (assuming we are keeping Markstrom). Unless you mean to acquire another goalie to expose in hopes we can trade Demko prior to the draft.
  8. He had a full NTC. He could reject any trade. He was only going to waive it for Anaheim or Chicago (on top of demanding a trade). https://www.nhl.com/news/ducks-get-kesler-in-trade-from-canucks/c-724128
  9. Thanks for looking into this. Goalie market is always slim simply because of the amount of spots available. Of those teams you mentioned, if he was chasing the money, then he could go to one of those bottom feeders. I imagine he want to continue with his progress here. I fully expect to sign a reasonable deal that makes sense for both sides and if he's being unfair, Benning has already stated that they are comfortable running with Demko if they must. Just have to find a respectable backup and we may simply re-sign Domingue or someone with more experience like Griess if that were the case. I'm hoping we could lock in Marky for around 5.5 or less.
  10. I'd like to see Stech as the 7 as well, but he would have to take a massive pay cut to do so. I'm thinking it'll more likely be someone like Brisebois/Teves/Rafferty/Chatfield as the 7 (and maybe 8 if we go with 13 forwards) because they are cheap options and are seasoned in the AHL. I think Rathbone would start in the AHL if he signs this year (closer to family being a benefit as well). Otherwise he may stay in college for another year and might be able to walk onto the team when Benn's contract expires.
  11. I know this is the Tryamkin thread, so I don't blame you for your interpretation of this post. I had replied to a post suggesting that we are at least 3 years from serious contention and should use these next few years to inject prospects to give them experience. So I was simply suggesting that prospects should earn their spots rather than be handed them if they want NHL time. I fully believe that Tryamkin is an NHLer at this point (read my other posts if you don't believe me), but I do think he should start as a bottom pairing guy (although he may not be there long) and work his way up. As for Gudbranson, just some clarification, he was traded for McCann (former 1st rounder), a 2nd and a 4th. He also was played with Edler a brief time, he mostly was paired with Hutton and Pouliot in "2nd and 3rd pairing" roles, not top pairing. If we didn't re-sign him, he would've signed elsewhere, so at least we still got Pearson from him because he was still a valued commodity worthy of a trade even at that price tag.
  12. Probably A as I must've misread what you were saying. My bad.
  13. Pretty tough for a Dane to crack the Russian national teams. He's played for Denmark internationally though.
  14. Which is why prospects have to earn their spots rather than be handed spots for "development". That's where the hard work comes in. The tough decisions is when those prospects prove they are worthy of a spot, then you have to decide who to cut or make trades from depth positions to bolster weaker areas. I'm confident that JB is doing his job planning. That still doesn't mean you toss away seasons thinking you won't win. He's planning year by year on what tweaks are needed to hopefully get us to the holy grail and that could happen in any given year if everything comes together that season.
  15. LE is no doubt the most obvious poor signing. I take the other hit or misses with a grain of salt because they were never long term solutions for us anyway. This past year's UFA was probably more indicative of targets that we had hoped would be players that took us to another level. Myers has been debated on, but I feel is a good addition in a position of need. Ferland was a gamble, but he potentially was top 6 material for a "bargain" price at that risk. Unfortunately the concussions caught up to him, but hopefully he can bounce back from it. Fantenberg and Benn were still a couple of stop gaps signings IMO. I agree that I think that even Benning may have been surprised at how quickly things were turning around. However I think the signings were by designed to come off the books at strategic times. I think where he's been underrated though and doesn't get a lot of credit is his RFA signings where he's been getting players to sign for less than what most think they would've gotten because I think he's got the young guys buying into the system. This stems back to drafting for character, so these guys have a common goal on doing moreso what's best for the team rather than simply for themselves.
  16. Hence why people continue to play. If you think you're going to lose anyway and you don't buy lottery tickets, then you'll surely not win. Yes the best team wins, but who knows what that best team may be at any given year or time? Tampa was outright dominant last year, so they were the best team right? Swept in the first round I believe. St Louis were dead last at around the halfway mark, should they have given up already? When LA won their cup, they were an 8th seed. You make the playoffs, you never know. Teams aren't writing themselves off (aside from obvious bottom feeders in which we are no longer). You don't write off years in hopes that you'll be a contender 3 years down the line, that's just as much dreaming as you don't know if players will progress the way you expect them to. You can't predict injuries and such that could derail this "plan" and have years simply gone to waste. We simply continue to progress, aim for the playoffs, and then see where that takes you. You lose, it's still experience. Let the prospects decide their fate by earning their spots. This ideology hasn't changed during Benning's tenue where if young players are good enough, they will make room for them. The difference now is the competition is getting stiffer, but that's how you continue to push your prospects to be even better and the cream will rise to the top. You are judging a Tryamkin from 4 years ago that despite his shortcomings then was still an impactful player and made his presence known. He has come out and said he wasn't mentally prepared during his time here. He has stated himself that he wasn't mature enough and that in itself shows a sign a maturity. He has been in good shape in the KHL and has been a leader there. He has grown and those who have been following him during his time in the KHL know this rather than continue to live in the past and think he's the same player as then and simply has twiddled his thumbs in the KHL. All signs suggest that he wants to return, just waiting on the cap picture to clear up.
  17. Kesler had a full NTC when he was traded, so yeah there's that.
  18. I'd also argue that the UFA signings were mostly meant to be stop gap signings until prospects took over. So he probably didn't have the intention of looking for the best player, but rather simply build competition that is surpassable (stealth tank if you will). So harder to say if he's poor with UFA signings or more calculated.
  19. Honestly not sure what you mean about him not relating to the skill level in the NHL. He's not "toiling" in the KHL, he's matured and improved in the area that is his calling card which is defensive play (and Benning suggests he's a shutdown specialist). Benning says he expects 6-7 prospects in the next 2 years. That could include MacEwen, Brisebois/Rafferty and maybe Juolevi for next season while Hoglander, Podz, Lind and Rathbone vying for spots the following season. Benning has faith in them, but they still need to earn their spots. The prospects control their own destiny if they put in the work and push someone out, no one is being handed a spot. I disagree suggesting already that we have no chance at the Cup next year. If we make the playoffs, anything can happen. Not to say we go "all in", but I doubt management or the players have that mentality to write off the season already.
  20. Have to see how Demko progresses. Goaltenders aren't really an easy position to trade as there's only so many spots for them. If he was good enough to be starter, we likely could trade him before the expansion or simply have him be the draft shield and move on. If LA wants veteran prescence for their youth, they have Kopitar, Brown, and Doughty (amongst a couple of others). They were near dead last this year, so it'll be curious to see how they are considered closer to a playoff spot than us. I believe Toffoli has mentioned that he wants to play for a competitive team. If he wants to stay, he knows he likely can't take on full value and who knows what his full value will be now with the cap uncertainty. He needs to be certain that a team will pay him what he thinks he's worth, otherwise he might price himself out and as teams fill out, he loses his leverage. What people criticize him for now is not going to suddenly be news for the other GMs who have pro scouts. We have about 7 players with clauses (including an expiring Tanev). Most teams have around this number. We are tight in cap space, but I don't think we are in major trouble. Worst case is we can't sign one of these 3 "bigger priced" players. I believe we are closer to 6 million in bonuses, recapture, and buyouts (capfriendly has a potential bonus overage number that I don't think we will max out on). I don't think we need to outbid LA. I think if LA wants him, they will want him at a discount rather than for his raise price tag as I doubt they want ti soend that much for uncompetitive years (even if they are re-tooling, they aren't bouncing back from where they are now by next season). More likely is that LA will hope he will sign with them for 4-4.5 million if they even want him back and I expect we could lock him down for around 5-5.5 million. The UFA market is going to be hit this offseason and players aren't going to have the leverage that they would've had if the cap was going up. Who's in the market for Markstrom really? Markstrom wants to be here, so we will see how they make it work. As mentioned above, the market isn't going to be like previous years. Plus Tanev seems to want to be here. If he indeed wants 6, then he's priced himself out here and I wish him the best in finding a team that would take him on at that price tag. I think he will sign for 4.5-5 personally. If Toronto can make being 10 million over the cap work, I'm sure we can figure something out. Make the playoffs or not this year, we would be fighting until the end of the season. This is experience for the young core in feeling this heat and hopefully they learn from it and up their game that much more next season. We continue to trend back up and now we may not know if we would gone over that hump, but if not this year, I'm confident that we will get there next year and who knows once you get into the playoffs.
  21. Not gonna bother with the Tanev part, but Tryamkin has played 79 NHL games (didn't look out of place) and in his last KHL season (one of his best defensive years and Benning sees him as a shutdown specialist), they reduced their ice size that far closer to a NHL sized rink. Did you also suggest someone like Panarin should start in the AHL first because he came from the KHL? Technically Tryamkin had more experience on small ice than him. I can understand starting Tryamkin in a lesser bottom pairing role to see where he's at against NHL competition, but he's proven that he can play on smaller ice so there's nothing to prove for him in Utica IMO.
  22. McCann did get traded twice by age 22 though unlike those players. However, that's not to say that being traded is a clear indication of poor character, it simply adds to the fact that he's had some questionable remarks about him. I just believe character is very important to this organization and there was a change in emphasis towards this for our drafting which could be attributed to our newfound success in that department. It is hard to distinguish confidence and arrogance sometimes, but that's why the scouting department does their due diligence through their interviews and such. It could be argued that our players are "too nice" without some of that attitude, but they seem to be guys that want to play for each other and want to play for the Canucks because most feel loyal to the team that drafted them. It's much easier to root for the success of these players even if we have to move on from them to improve the team (but it also makes it harder to lose these types of players). Pearson was a solid player in LA. He was someone at that time that I never thought we could acquire. His stock dropped after being traded for whatever reason and it was nice to see him bounce back with us for a player that was heading in the wrong direction for us (although I was rooting for Gudbranson to succeed here and think maybe things would've been different with some better partners other than his usual Pouliot/Hutton partnership).
  23. I'm not concerned about his ability to play in the NHL, but we offered him 2 million before he left. I replied to a suggestion that he would get 3-3.5 million and I don't think he would he get a raise because he improved in the KHL. I think he needs to prove that here before he gets a raise on the original offer.
  24. Most players as soon as they're called are beaming for the fact that they got drafted. It wasn't just a split second. His dad didn't even looked pleased about it. Why they didn't look pleased? Who knows but it wasn't a good look. Perhaps he was hoping to fall one more pick below to Boston as he talked about Bergeron being one of the players he wanted to emulate (along with Kesler who was dealt for his pick). Perhaps he wanted to be in Pittsburgh all along who drafted two spots before us. We traded McCann because he had value. He had some skill, but he was expendable for some reason. Depth could be one thing, but he wasn't viewed as an important piece to build the team with. We could have kept him as a winger if there wasn't center space. We needed defense for sure, but unlike someone like Gaudette (who was a rumoured target for Subban), Benning had no problem moving him out. I have nothing personally against McCann. I responded to some rumour that suggested that Benning didn't want McCann and I was simply trying to piece together what may have transpired and based on how we have been drafting. We see brief snippets of their real selves in the public eye, which is why stories that come from people like Beth and Andrey may seem small, but they can corroborate notions that are debated on. Benning and management know far more on what goes on behind the scenes and likely their true character (as mentioned from player and possibly family interviews that we don't see or hear about often). Things may play out differently for them as they have more knowledge of the situation. This isn't about winning the trade but trying to determine why McCann was sent packing so quickly after he had been drafted. McCann is an okay player, but nothing really special about him. He isn't better than any of our current top 6 forwards and his production is around our current 3rd line. He had more minutes when Sid and Geno went down, but started getting his minutes cut when they returned and Pittsburgh added Zucker and Marleau. He went from a hot start of 12 points in 18 games back to under 0.5 PPG for the rest of the season. I like what we have coming up in the system, so I don't have great interest in bringing him back especially if what I believe is to be true.
