I was referring more to his reaction after he was selected. Most players are quite excited to hear their name called, he looked expressionless. Public interviews after PR prompts them, they know to put on a smile and push through it. I was referring to the draft interviews that GM and scouts have with the players prior to the draft and they get a taste of their character and they even go as far as interviewing their families sometimes to dig into their upbringing as well as looking at potential physical growth. The comments from Beth and Pedan aren't deciding factors on players, but they likely corroborate the feelings from management. I don't know what is said in Pittsburgh as I don't follow all the minor happenings here, but Sid and Geno aren't Beth and Pedan and likely wouldn't put comments like that to the public. Much like the Sedins never said anything about him either if that's the standard. Plus keep in mind that he's been traded twice now, so perhaps that's a wake up call for him as well to get his act together or maybe he's finally on a team he wants to be on.

Meanwhile our team continues pressing forward and improving. Perhaps he will step right end after we have stacked our team and give us that additional boost. Bigger picture is not depressing at all (aside from there being no hockey right now).

[Signing] Canucks sign Nils Hoglander
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He's not getting more than an ELC. There's not a whole lot to negotiate. Our intention was to always sign him this offseason and get a longer look for him here in training camp (whereas he would be obligated to head back to Sweden for his camp there if not signed with us). We could still loan him back to Sweden if he prefers to not play in Utica (although I hope he sticks around). -

I get a lot of Brendan Gallagher vibes from Hoglander. Great to see him onboard! -
While I agree with you that Tryamkin has gotten better. He hasn't proven that at the NHL level yet. I doubt he gets a raise on that merit. He doesn't have much leverage back in the KHL either. I think we hold firm on a 2-2.5 million contract offer and he can choose to have a 1 or 2 year term to prove himself for a better next deal. The other option is if he wants 3 million, then I would ask for more term (4-5 years) to try and lock him down at a "lower" value with no trade clauses (if he doesn't pan out for whatever reason, some team will take a risk on him with his size and skating). Someone like Zadorov just got a 3.2 million dollar deal for 1 year and he's proven a lot more at the NHL level and I think they are comparable players.

[Signing] Red Wings sign Mathias Brome
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'll be satisfied if we simply bring Tryamkin back (and sign Hoglander). We already added Michaelis who is one of the top college FAs. There wouldn't be much room for Suter or Brome really either, which is probably why he didn't sign here anyway. -
I think there's a difference between a player that is driven to be the best versus a player with "attitude". When McCann got drafted, he didn't look happy at all (not quite Steve Francis level though). This "attitude" is generally what is seen from their draft interviews and behind the scenes happenings that we don't always see. Things like what is alluded to later from other reports that show further of the poor attitude is what you don't hear from players that are instead simply driven players. There's a reason why scouts also look into the parents who show their upbringing for their character beyond potential physical growth as well. An example of a player that I believe to have a poor attitude is someone like Duchene as demonstrated from the Ottawa incident. Every team he's been on hasn't been very good (not solely on him, but based on what happened in Ottawa, we don't know what type of effect he would have). He's a skilled player, but he's not a guy that you generally see as taking your team to another level. So yes a poor attitude can be a massive difference maker.

Something is better than nothing I suppose, but this does certainly feel more like something that is more than just for charity. They could've at least put the food banks logo on it as well if nothing else to give it some advertising to support them.

Canucks can only sign two of Toffoli, Tanev or Markstrom
theo5789 replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
I guess it depends on if the exceptional status be a one time use like a compliance buyout would be. I think the concept is simply hiding your star player from the cap or removing dead cap (and therefore more room for the quality players rather than simply hanging onto players that can't play in the league anymore but are hanging around due to their contracts being unmoveable). It makes sense for an agent to want to open up for more spending as Jimmy was alluding to than to try and correct the cap issue by removing mistakes. -
The NHL follows the NBA (once again) in selling team branded masks. Proceeds go towards Food Banks Canada (and Feeding America). https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/nhl-face-masks-coronavirus

This would pretty much eliminate the purpose of the cap. The rich teams (eg Toronto) would benefit most from this while there would be less incentive for low level teams to bother as they would receive a luxury tax. We'd simply be getting closer back to the days where a couple of teams would blow their wad to win a cup as they could offer say McDavid 20 million a season (and why would he turn that down?) and not have it count towards their cap. -
I believe his progress made us feel a little more comfortable moving Madden.

We would only save just over a million in cap space by sending LE down. We would still be on the hook for almost 5 million in dead cap space. Whatever player you send down will need to be replaced with some depth and even if it's cheap depth, you're only saving a few hundred thousand. -
Benning was so excited about EP that he blew his cover pointing at him and couldn't make a trade. Whatever excitement he had for Glass was for show to try and trade down. I could see Benning not wanting McCann for his attitude (doesn't seem to fit the model of our drafting) and McCann seemed to show it right away. But I guess in the end, he went for BPA and was able to trade him as soon after. Whether he "desperately" wanted Bleackley will be unknown, but I can see why he probably didn't care for McCann.

You say minimum 16 million, but your total there is 15 million Tanev at 4.5 million is not as much of a discount and much more feasible for both sides. I think Stecher is as good as gone at his price tag (love the guy, just can't afford him). Only way I see us moving on from Benn is by waiving him to save about a million and replacing him with Utica depth as you say, but that might save only around 300k which is better than nothing. I'd be surprised if a team was willing to trade for him given the season he had. This might be attractive if say we re-sign Fantenberg for roughly the same amount or a similar player and have someone like Brisebois/Teves (or maybe even a surprise like Juolevi or Rathbone ready to rotate in and out with that bottom pairing spot). Hard to see us keeping Benn in the NHL without freeing up cap elsewhere. -

I think teams are going to be weary risking overpaying this offseason to bolster their lineup. Many teams are going to be trying to shed cap or otherwise they are teams that are bottom feeders that aren't looking to add (and Toffoli has said he doesn't want to play for a bottom feeder). I don't think he will take a discount either, but I don't think he has a lot of leverage to ask for an overpay. I'm expecting somewhere between 5.5-6.5 for him, but we are more likely to be able to afford to keep him he can be signed for under 6. I was expecting Markstrom to get 6 million a season, but might go down to 5.5 or so if we protect him in expansion (but still could have a limited trade clause). Tanev at best might take 4.5 (which is the same pay he's getting now), but I'm thinking he might take 5 to lock in. -

The reason Tanev has taken a beating is cause he's the first guy over the boards on every PK (unless he took the penalty, which is rare for him) and he faces the toughest assignments night in and night out. Stecher may be healthier in games played, but generally Tanev gets more minutes per game (including the harder ones). This season, Tanev has played 300 more minutes than Stecher while both have been healthy. Hughes has alleviated the pressure for Tanev and Myers has taken some of the hard minutes. If we add Tryamkin, opponents may shift some of their attack away from the right side (something that Stecher would not do) which could also alleviate more of the challenges Tanev faces letting him play at the top level of his game while maintaining his health. Tanev has always been complimented for his intelligence and despite not having great offensive numbers, he contributes to the success which is why he's almost always on the plus side of things despite being a defensive dman facing the top opposition. Love Stech's heart and drive, but he's simply a very good bottom pairing guy that would compliment a solid top 4. However at 3+ million, he would be pricing himself out of that spot on most good teams. His best bet if he wants that type of money is to play for a bottom feeder (like Hutton), but take the best offer you can get as soon as you can (unlike Hutton). Otherwise take a paycut and join a team like Nashville who loves their BC boys and I think he would flourish in their bottom pairing, much like Yannick Weber did. He would have to take quite a significant paycut to stay here (unless we can unload some pieces easily) and accept a lesser role (see Biega). -
It'll certainly depend on the price point for the walk ups. I think this is enough of a die hard hockey fanbase that we won't see empty buildings. There will be precautions, with sanitizing stations and maybe mandatory masks to start. Of course also depending if/when a vaccine comes out. I just think that if we get to a point where they would even allow fans to a game that drastic improvements will have been made. Businesses will be back running well before this. The people buying tickets aren't generally the paycheque to paycheque types to start with. While tickets won't be a priority, I think if the Canucks come out with an exciting product, people will find their way back. I'm not sure if we would sell out on a nightly basis, but I was saying I expect opening night likely to sell out and that hypes up for the rest of the season if so.
-
It'll be interesting to see what unfolds. I predict first game back that allows fans will be sold out. This because of the hype around the return, potential incentives to get fans back and maybe even a dip in prices. I get people will be afraid of the situation, but there won't be games at this time. The next time we see games with fans in attendance will be when things are eased off and thus allowing the restriction on these events to be lifted. Just like as soon as restrictions are lifted, we will likely see droves of people hit the malls, beaches, etc.

What video is this? I predict that we will re-sign all of them (as long as we get a compliance buyout and the cap at the very least stays the same and does not drop). -
This is a good thread to show that you shouldn't rush your prospects and don't expect young 20-22 years to be top flight NHLers or bust.

[Signing] Kings sign Tyler Madden
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
8th place teams can get to the finals and even possibly win a Cup. On the other hand, a record breaking Tampa team was swept last year when everyone thought they should just be handed the Cup. You never know once you're in the playoffs. You want to peak when the playoffs roll around and it doesn't matter if you look like a contender the rest of the year. You draft (make picks in any rounds) and develop (which IMO is just as important as where you're picking which is why finding the right players that will push themselves is valuable) all the time whether you're a contender or not. You don't give up thinking you won't win, you'll never win anything with that attitude and mentality. The GM tries to keep the team from having the giving up mentality, and Benning knew this was possible with the Boeser injury news that he must've known and struck a trade before announcing the bad news. The Markstrom injury was another hit that happened after the fact, but we quickly made a deal for Domingue for some veteran experience behind Demko. -
[SIGNING] Goldobin signs with CSKA Moskow
theo5789 replied to Beefcake's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He comes off as a guy you really want to support and hope he gets to the next level. However at the same time, I think he still doesn't truly get "it". He still believes that if he scored more that it would've changed things and of course it could've kept him around longer. However, the team was always preaching about the play away from the puck and the effort to play a two way game and that is honestly what would've bought him more time if his offense wasn't there yet. There was definitely some improvement from when he first arrived, but he wasn't at a point where he needed minor improvements to round out his game as he needed almost an overhaul. Still wish him the best, but it's going to take far more than scoring more (unless we are talking Panarin type numbers) to get him back in the NHL regularly.
