We still have a deep prospect pool (and we continue to sign players like Rafferty, MacEwen, Michaelis, etc). At some point there is no more room for young players and you have to build a team to make a push. We could also just as easily draft a dud (or get a player that has unforseen injury issues setting them back) and it would be the same as if we had moved those picks for nothing. However, with those picks, we have acquired two top 6 forwards, something we could only dream for those picks to become.

I guess we will see what happens with Sutter, Roussel and Ferland as well then.

I think Motte might have something to say about that.

[Signing] Canucks sign William Lockwood

We have a Loui Eriksson fan folks! -
My bad, just itching for more hockey talk.

Michaelis is certainly primed for that role. There certainly will have to be some rule exceptions with these unforseen circumstances, so we will see how it plays out. I'm not sure is Michaelis can step right into an NHL PK coming out of college, so we will see how he fares in camp. Benning does say he hopes he develops into a PK guy, so I imagine it'll take some time. Could be a replacement for Sutter in another year.
-
What makes you say that? Points? He was up to 1.4 PPG in his final season and during that time, he may have elevated his defensive side of the game. He had 10 shorthanded goals. Probably one of the reasons Benning wants him on the PK as he's responsible, but also an offensive threat on the PK which we don't really have right now. Although as of now, I agree that he's likely a good call up option and potentially 1C (although he will have to battle some AHL vets for that spot).
-
He never said a PK specialist. He thinks he could develop into a guy that can play on the PK. He praised his skill and playmaking and how he makes players around him better, so they clearly value his offensive upside as well. Aside from the character as you mentioned, I think he values his ability to play a two way game.
-
In most cases, you would give him a game at the end of a season to end the ELC contract and generally offer a one way deal (similarly to Rafferty/Teves). They are simply bypassing this because the contract is for next season and going straight to a one way deal. There has been a lot of Utica talk that we don't have enough centers, this adds for next season. Unlikely to earn a spot of camp, but he could earn an early call up option like Graovac did. If he can PK at the NHL level as Benning hopes he does, then he could very well get looks should Sutter (if he's still here next season) and Beagle get injured as they seem to do so every season. Hopefully this is also some fuel for Gaudette to step up in this role as well.
-
Our top 6 is starting to get full. Bottom 6 is easier to crack. He's basically being given a goal to achieve to make the team. If he can be a PK guy (not all offense translates to the NHL), then he can take over one of the PK spots currently held by Loui Eriksson and if he can play center at the NHL level, then also a Sutter or Beagle spot in the future (especially a call up considering those guys get hurt often). With that said, he wants him to be a PK guy, but that doesn't limit his ability to play offense if he can bring it. A sound two way game always gets you in the good books with the coaches and management.

[Signing] Canucks sign Marc Michaelis

We needed to continue our traditional of our annual hobey Baker finalist. -
How about a dance off?

As the first major splash as the GM of the Flyers, we as an organization wanted to show that our team is committed to being competitive. Mika has been having a great season and we wanted to ensure that he remains a core piece to our team. We are glad to keep Mika and his family part of our family. Of course there is none happier than his current teammate JT Miller who couldn't hold back his excitement.

[Waivers] Troy Brouwer, Aaron Ness

Possibly as OJ straight up for Simmonds could not have been remotely close to being possible. Although it was suggested that we didn't have the cap space to make it work, but wouldn't dumping Loui have created that space (unless it had to do with something complicated with the LTIR)? Have to believe we would've offered a much lesser prospect than OJ (or Woo). Maybe Utunen or something if they were looking at dmen. -

And that's all speculation and not evidence that Benning is "growing impatient" with OJ. Yes the team likely wanted OJ to be further ahead, but it's not from his own development, there were unfortunate injuries. Friedman was also speculating what could have been dealt for Simmonds, not basing on any credible rumour. An aging bottom 6 rental, there was no way we were trading that kind of value unless there was more to the deal. Look at the eventual trade for Simmonds, not even close to the value of a Juolevi (or Woo that Friedman also speculated). Just because Benning is willing to move a prospect (no one knows which ones Benning is suggesting and would depend on the return) instead of a pick does not mean he's done with those prospects. I don't think you can speak on behalf of Benning and suggest what he's thinking based on speculation on your part. The only evidence we are seeing is that the team is being patient and working with OJ to get him to become the player that they are hoping for. He's not untradable for the right return, but I doubt we are looking to move him for a minimal return like a Simmonds. -
Assuming we are talking development camp because I don't think Rathbone (and college players) are eligible for training camp, the year MacMaster was there, Juolevi wasn't (injury I believe). Juolevi was listed for training camp and so was MacMaster, but the competition is far different, so not sure how he is assessing the two in comparison. Keeping in mind that OJ wasn't 100% either and not long into the season was shut down. Doesn't seem like a fair comparison. If it's true that there was some dislike towards Finns, I would suggest that there is also bias in the assessment. Palmu was good buddies with Gadjovich, so is Gadjovich's character also in question? Doesn't seem to fit the way we have been drafting. I mean everything you are saying could be true, but it just doesn't all seem to add up.

Suggesting he rather move a young piece rather than more picks hardly suggests he's grown inpatient with Juolevi. If Juolevi is that much of a risk, then surely that knocks his value down in a trade. Baertschi 50% retained won't save us much cap compared to just buying him out and we wouldn't have to give up any asset to do so. So it would have to be a small retention or none at all to make it worth it, but the. The value of the asset we would have to trade along with him goes up. Roussel has value where we could potentially unload his entire cap if need be. I don't want to do it, but if it locks in the main pieces, then so be it. Sutter has one year left, so hopefully it'll be easier to move him now if need be. -

Doesn't sound like a credible source and more speculation than actual news. Sure doesn't sound like it's actually Benning suggesting it. If Stecher wants Tanev's current money, then he's gone. He's not worth it. As I've said, he's a good bottom pairing guy and they don't get paid 4.5 million. Everyone speculated that Edler would get 7-8 million with term. Edler wanted to be here and signed for well under what people expected. If Tanev feels the same way, then I bet the max he goes is 5.5, still not sure if we can fit that in. However unless you think Stecher can slot into a top 4 role (funny after what you've been saying about him), you're leaving a big hole in keeping Stecher over Tanev. I think we might not be able to afford Tanev, but Stecher will become to pricey for his position as well and potentially both go for cheaper options. We have 20.5 million in cap space next season (uncertain if the cap will rise now). Let's say 6 + 6 for Toffoli and Markstrom. Jake gets 3, Gaudette 1.5 (bridge), Motte 1.5, MacEwen 1, Leivo walks. That's 19 million. Of course there is two gaping holes to fill with 1.5 million (plus bonus overages of about 1.7 million). I see us likely buying out Baertschi if there are no takers. We will see what happens with LE (ideally he retires, but he might be an interesting option for a cap floor team after his bonus as well), but at worse we could waive him and save a million. We could explore trading Roussel and Sutter. Unless we are trading Demko, we are unlikely re-signing Domingue (assuming we re-sign Marky). A combination of these things will give us the room needed to make it all work. -

Cheap and free and usually not going to be significant impactful hence why they are cheap and free. If we were to get out of that defensive funk now (moot again), it would take a team approach rather than a personnel approach. With that said, defensive break downs also can be attributed to the forwards as well for coverage. Unlucky bounces happen, so hard to fault players on that. It happens to other players on the team, but yet they don't get dumped on. As for the future of the defense, Tryamkin may return which would be a boost. Tanev has looked good with Hughes, so I'd take Tanev at a discounted rate before Stecher. Stecher is more easily replaced IMO with budget players. Of course signing Tanev might not be feasible with the cap, but we will see how the offseason plays out. Where's the source that Benning is impatient with OJ's development? Haven't heard anything. -

theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Have always been saying that the defense needs work. I've only said that Ness wasn't the answer now or ever. I've been bringing up that the idea is moot because of the post TDL rule. I wasn't aware they couldn't even play the rest of the regular season as well which makes it even more moot. Brouwer was not made available before the TDL. No one wanted to trade for him. He was available in the off season, could only get a PTO. Made available again and could only find a PTO and eventually a contract, but now waived again. He's not the player he once was and there are plenty of budget options if we were looking for that (aside from internal depth). I prefer that we are giving someone like MacEwen a look instead. Brouwer was never replacing Sutter. You have your beef with some players and I get it. We could improve our team for sure. I just can't see why Ness and Brouwer would be the players that you are advocating that would make any significant impact to our team. We have moved on from waiver plugs filling out lineup thank goodness. -
Not saying that NYR doesn't attract them for other reasons, but I think the allure of making the big club as soon as possible adds to it.

Stecher has hit a rough patch, but he's been pretty steady otherwise. Everything else is moot as explained by @mll -
I wonder if also that they are a rebuilding team and have a lot of room for college players to make the jump right away or at least have a good crack at it. Plus being a high profile team helps.

What I take most from this is that if those are direct quotes through text, then it's good to his English is coming along nicely. Unless of course he simply used Google translate, but I think it would be noticable.
