[PGT] New York Islanders at Vancouver Canucks | Mar. 10, 2020
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
A poster brought up that it wasn't Patrick White that they were targetting. They intentionally didn't want to sign him as at the time, you get compensated if you do not sign a 1st round pick. The compensation was a 2nd round pick which ended up as Chris Tierney who was a decent player for them and who would then be part of the Karlsson acquisition (while not panning out, but was part of a major trade). -

He was acquired like a week before the TDL, so is it technically a trade deadline deal? With that said, an excellent acquisition indeed, not just for the scoring though. It was nice to see him jump in when Petey got knocked down. Standing up for his teammates will always be endearing to his teammates and fans. -
[Waivers] Troy Brouwer, Aaron Ness

We don't have the d group that allows Stecher to play only 12 minutes a game. Those usually require a top pair that plays 25+ mins or a solid top 4 taking the brunt of the minutes like Nashville. We have a balanced group and Stecher's minutes are the lowest of the defense group (even less then Benn/Fantenberg), which equates to our #6/bottom pairing dman. No one is over-hyping Stecher, he's a good bottom pair (low minute if you prefer) guy. All I'm saying is Ness isn't better than Stecher and he isn't going to make a difference to our defense group. Brouwer is not the player he once was. He's taken a few faceoffs, but he's no centermen. We have too many wingers as it is. We are not sitting out Sutter for a guy that has played 13 games this season, so we are more likely to see MacEwen lose his spot if we did for whatever reason claim him. He can't be sent to Utica as he's not papered down to be eligible for their playoff run either. We have acquired Toffoli if we need a cup winning voice. Good on you for sticking to your guns, but these are two players we absolutely do not need as they aren't improvements and have no use for us even if we make the playoffs (say they do make an impact, we have to sit them out and have guys come in cold for the playoffs). It's interesting that you downplay Stecher being a hometown guy and being overhyped for it and yet it's a selling point for Brouwer. -
Calm down? I'm not the one worrying about Rathbone leaving elsewhere.

Neither Ness nor Brouwer would be playoff eligible for us. No one is treating Stecher like Doughty. The reality is he's a #6 dman with us right now. He gets paired with Edler on occasion, but not regularly. He's averaged 15+ minutes a night, nowhere near the 20 minutes that you suggest (although he got that last year due to injuries). He's a fine bottom pairing (or #6 if you prefer) dman. He is better than Ness. You seem to be over-exagerrating and blowing things out of proportion. The defense could use some work, no one is questioning that, it's just Ness isn't the answer. -
We couldn't convince Cagguila to sign here despite Boeser and Stecher here. We couldn't convince Aston-Reese to sign despite Gaudette here. I doubt Rathbone is suddenly that close to Fox after one season together. Rathbone technically is eligible for two more years of college hockey I believe. However he could hit UFA after next season. We committed to him when many teams glossed over him for not going to college right away. We have made an effort to draft players with good character. Guys like Gaudette and Lockwood have always said they would sign with the team that believed in them and drafted them. I suspect Rathbone would be of the same mold. We also drafted Aidan McDonagh who apparently was a childhood friend of Rathbone too.

Not sure what you have against Stecher, he's been excellent as a bottom pairing guy. He's had some unlucky bounces of late, but that doesn't take away from him as a player. Ness' player description is almost exactly what Stecher is. It's a lateral move at best and a change for the sake of change. There's a reason he has only 71 NHL games and he's turning 30 in May. He's not going to make a difference. Clearly not enough for Arizona who are also making a playoff push. I believe the TDL is more of a date where your eligible players for the playoffs are set. Any moves after is not eligible for the playoffs unless you are on their reserve list. It is unlikely a team would have another NHL player on their reserve list with the hopes they hit waivers. There would have to be some very fishy behind the scenes talks if it did play out this way. -

Pretty sure any players claimed now would not be eligible for the playoffs. Just like how we can still make trades after the TDL, but they won't be eligible. So this is likely all moot, but for conversation sake, I'll continue. With that said, Stecher is a +8 this year despite his "gaffes". He does everything that Ness can do. Perhaps a spark is needed, but Ness isn't going to make a difference. If we wanted to try something like this, then we may as well call up Rafferty. There's a reason why Ness hasn't been given more than 13 minutes a night and yet finds himself going back to the AHL. You have Brouwer as a center when he's a winger and scratched our current 4th line center. Gaudette and EP are already not strong on faceoffs, so we would be depending strictly on Horvat and Miller to take the majority of the draws. Doesn't make sense and will burn out those guys. -

He's probably still more accurate than Eklund though.
-
33 is indeed a dman, Bodrov, but he's only listed at 6'1 200lbs.
-
Alf also said that LE has a handshake agreement that he will retire after his bonus. If he's right about Brackett leaving, then hopefully he's also right about the handshake agreement.
-
Don't think they have an 83 on their roster, but maybe you're seeing 93 Vasilevsky who is 6'4 201 lbs.
-
We have recently signed Rafferty, Teves and Kielly all from East coast colleges. We have signed plenty more prior (eg MacEwen, Stecher, etc). We have been adding these said free prospect for years while people have been complaining about us not adding picks and thus making up for said lost opportunities. There is literally no concern about college/free prospect signings. With that said, these college signings are rarely going to make up for the high picks. They are generally long shots that developed later in their careers. We may add Rathbone and Tryamkin before the season is done and I can almost guarantee that they will be better than any college FA available and thus maximizing our later round picks. Making later round picks count is just as effective at making up for lacking high picks.

Would Pittsburgh have preferred Crosby or more lesser players? Would Colorado have more lesser players rather than MacKinnon? Not saying Lafreniere will get to these levels (although I see a lot of MacKinnon in Lafreniere's game), but there's a reason why 1st overalls are considered that and he's at top of this deep group. If it was a different draft where the top guy wasn't quite as stand out (eg the Yakupov year, etc), then I see the value of going for quantity over quality, but I believe Lafreniere is at that top level (barring injuries).
-
And what about Podkolzin? Plus several quality prospects that have yet to join the team. If we are lucky enough to win a top 3 pick, then it'll make a difference. I doubt if we pick between 10-15 that it's going to be the difference between a Cup or not. We have a brand new young core (that isn't even fully complete yet as Benning suggest at least 7 more young players he expects to join within the next 2 years) that is untested in the playoffs. Seems a bit early to be writing them off as incapable of winning the Cup. I think we are lacking a top RD, but I'm not sure Drysdale is necessarily that guy that will be make or break for us and he's really the only option.

His hockey career is done, last I heard he was applying to be a manager at Mcds, but an injury stopped him from getting to the interview. He will be heading back home to Finland to take some coding classes.

[Article] Panthers set to retire Luongo's No. 1
theo5789 replied to Rubik's topic in General Hockey Discussion
We ended up sending him there, but there were other teams that he would've accepted being traded to, but the teams weren't offering anything of value (eg Toronto and their 2nd round pick). It wasn't like it was only Florida that he was willing to go to and he wanted to go East. Had we not played games with Luongo, he would've finished his career as a Canuck. Kesler gave us two teams (Anaheim and Chicago), both were Western rivals and Chicago didn't have the cap room for him anyway. It was made public those were the only two teams on his list and it spiraled downhill from there in terms of trade value. Keep in mind Kesler also signed an offer sheet to try to get out of town sooner in his career. Kesler never really seemed to want to be here, but saw his chance at success and stuck it out, then got out as soon as he could while giving us the middle finger. Now I get being frustrated with the Luongo retirement thing, but the silver lining is that he chose the year that punishes us the least to retire as opposed the next couple of years where it would've been more detrimental. He "helped" us this way while helping his own current team. I certainly don't hold much against Luongo and certainly above someone like Kesler. -

It was a contract designed to win now as it lowered the cap for the competitive team that we had in the cap era. Much like all the NTCs given out. There was never any plan to think long term, the goal was to win the Cup. So as crappy as the contract was in the end, it's arguable what we could've have (or have not) done if the contract wasn't done this way.
