[Signing] Sharks re-sign Radim Simek
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'd do 2 million a year for 4 years, no clauses. See if that pushes the limit for Seattle to not look at him for expansion purposes. -
We heard this rumour in the off-season. Apparently the potential trade went back as far as last TDL. Very likely the Lucic rumour. We didn't want to pay an asset to move LE, so unlikely we were looking at that option as we were able to manage his contract as demonstrated this season. The cap floor going up could entice floor teams as after his bonus, his cap hit is well above what he would be getting paid. The cost to move him might have dropped making it more enticing for us. He has a modified NTC (15 team no trade list) now, so unless he puts all the floor teams on it, he can't really prevent us from moving him if we find the right fit (of course we could also still play the Utica card if he holds back a deal again).

Source? I must've missed it.

Cap Hell for Canucks!!! (GREAT NEWS from Daly re: CAP for next year!!)
theo5789 replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Yay we get to keep LE longer without worry! -
But wait, I thought his development was being ruined in the KHL.

JB never said the rebuild is over. He did say he is hoping to see at least 7 young players make the roster over the next couple of years. How is that construed to suggest Benning thinks the rebuild is over when he thinks nearly a third of the roster will be changed with youth? He wants to make the playoffs to assess the team in that environment to see how to proceed. We didn't sell the farm, there's plenty of talent still coming up. We moved Madden because he felt he might be a winger in the NHL and we have Podkolzin, Hoglander, Lind, etc to fill that role (nevermind that Madden may have gotten a season ending hand injury and we all know how we love to get on players for injury issues). Focht is looking like a decent center and Gaudette is getting a vote of confidence. Draft picks to fill up our top 6 (and currently our top line) is hardly something worth crying about. There have been plenty of (championship) teams that have missed on their 1st round picks anyway, so those are no better than throwing picks away for nothing. At least we got players of value where we expect those high draft picks should hopefully land anyway.

Hopefully we make something work. LE would be the dream.

I think the most we can take from this rumour is that it's good that we are talking with Ottawa. They should have some cap room and could possibly be a destination for us to unload some cap. Maybe Baertschi would be of interest to them with only one year left on his contract. If Goldy could be the sweetener, then even better.

Okay let's look into this. LA Kings 2006-2009. 38 picks. IMO, 6 impactful players part of this group. Lewis, Simmonds, Martinez, Doughty (2nd overall pick), Voynov (relatively short term because we know what happened here), and Brayden Schenn (more impactful elsewhere). Some in the depth group in Bernier, King, Clifford, Nolan, Dowd. 13 top 100 pick duds which including Vey (personal distractions), Hickey (4th overall pick, made a bit of a career elsewhere), and Teubert (13th overall). 2010 and 2011, they started selling picks and became Cup champions eventually. Chicago Blackhawks 2004-2006. 38 picks. IMO, 5 impactful players. Bolland, Bickell, Brouwer, Hjalmarsson and Toews (3rd overall). Can't even say they got much depth from the rest and this included a dud 3rd overall pick in Barker and 7th overall Skille. Eventually they would nab Kane (1st overall). Blackhawks 2010-2012. 29 picks. IMO, 4 impactful players. Hayes (successful elsewhere), Saad, Shaw, Teravainen (successful elsewhere). 3 depth options in Nordstrom, Danault, and Hinostroza all of which has found their success elsewhere. A couple of 1st round duds. Pittsburgh had a nice run of top 2 picks and have made them count. Without those picks, their draft aside from Letang and Goligoski hasn't amounted to much from 2003-2007. Now the Canucks take on all of this. From the examples above, it didn't seem to be about the volume of picks, but having the right picks to put the team over the top. They've all had lotto winning picks, something we never got the luxury of exasperated by the draft lotto changes in the midst of our poorest rebuild seasons. They had a volume of prospects, but not necessarily quality prospects. Their cup winning teams were also built from acquired/signed players with their core being the drafted high end picks. It is demonstrated that even missing on some 1st rounders didn't phase them so if OJ does bust (as some seem to want to happen so badly for whatever reason), then it's not the end of the world. They've all demonstrated that they could trade away prospects to improve their rosters. So IMO, there isn't much to indicate that the volume of picks is the difference towards them becoming Cup champions. I would say these teams have acquired elite talent through the draft by having at least 2 top 3 picks. And even with that said, it's not even a surefire way to turn a team into a champion as we have seen teams like Edmonton, Buffalo, Toronto, NJ collect top picks and still have struggled for years. So it's also important to surround your quality picks with veteran support. Boston, Washington and St Louis have not accumulated a ton of picks and have won championships as well. I think what we can take from all this is that there is not one way to rebuild and not one way to become a championship team. Hoarding picks doesn't necessarily net you more quality prospects, it just gives you more lottery tickets. At the end of the day, we have not skipped a rebuild and we are still rebuilding as we are still expecting a surge of youth to change the face of our team. Just because we are pushing for the playoffs does not mean we are done and "all in". We are continuing to develop our prospects and playoff hockey is another step in letting the young guys get a taste and to gauge the team. Our team is trending up and the prospect pool is still rich as we are making the picks that we do have count. We will see over time which prospects make the grade, but I have a feeling that our batting average of impactful/depth prospects will be as good or even better than that of the ones brought up.

Read the first sentence of that post. Panarin is doing wonders for them (as he did for CBJ as well), this is something that people here would be questioning why we would go all in on a high priced UFA at this stage of the rebuild. This has worked out nicely for them. We in turn made a trade for JT Miller who has also panned out for us. Both players are amongst the best acquisition of the year and both have pushed us into the playoff conversation. We paid a 1st, but we aren't spending nearly 13 million of cap on one player either. Pro and cons for each direction. They did it their way, we did it ours, we are both in similar situations in terms of standings. Just a clear example that there is more than one way to rebuild. There are several other examples of teams that sold off assets and are still struggling to get out of their funks.

How many teams that have hoarded picks that have been more successful? Fortunately there isn't only one way to rebuild. Our team has been improving and we still continue to have one of the deepest prospects pools in the league (arguably one of the reasons we aren't at the top is because our top young guys have already cracked the roster and aren't even considered prospects anymore). It's showing that we are making our picks count rather than simply having high picks. If your stance is that we haven't had a lot of high picks then it's even more remarkable that our prospect pool is as good as it is without as many of them. I'd argue that the rebuild didn't start immediately when Benning came and there seemed to be a change in mentality during his time (possibly around when Linden left). This is why I say 3-5 years of rebuild because it's hard to gauge when it really started. So with that said, the signings of Gagner and LE were done prior to our rebuild status (which I would suggest truly began when the Sedins retired to start the new generation). Beagle and Sutter have taken the hard minutes that young players would have their confidence destroyed in (see Edmonton). I'd throw in Schaller in there as well, and he was dealt in the Toffoli deal, so not much harm there. Even Gagner was beat out for his spot and didn't hold back any young player coming up.

Sellable assets. We will see how they fare when they decide to transition from a tank team to a competitive one. We have made 5 2nd round picks over Benning's tenure. That would be hard to do had we sold them all. Spending to the cap every year has no bearing to the team and us. It only affects Aquilini's pockets. We aren't rushing the process. This is the process. Trust it. The Kool aid sure tastes better than the piss in your cereal.
-
We are still transitioning to a new regime of players. What is your definition of a rebuild?
-
This is the problem. Team tank was still strong in the offseason. Now that we've had some success, it's either we are at the top of the league or we are duds. They're ignoring the bigger picture.
-
So you're suggesting we go with the Ottawa model? You talk about top 10 picks and then include McCann and Boeser. Virtanen is meh? Sure if you say so. OJ is the only stumbling block, but not because he was a poor pick, but he's gone through injury issues after the pick was made. Our prospect pool is one of the best since even dating further back than 5 years. The past 5 years has shown the growth and is a demonstration of us putting more towards that as part of the rebuild. Hence not bypassing any rebuild as you've suggested. If you read my post, I specifically said that the rebuild isn't done yet. That's what you're suggesting (or that we haven't even bothered to rebuild at all supposedly despite having a brand new young core). I said the fact that we are where we are within 3-5 years is remarkable and we aren't even done yet (Benning agrees as he sees at least 7 young players joining the team over the next couple of years which I've said earlier). We haven't sold the farm and the pieces that we have moved are on the top line. We don't make the playoffs this year, we still have our 1st round pick. We make the playoffs, we don't draft until the 3rd round, but then we have accomplished making the playoffs and thus got the value that we "sold".
-
The assets we sold were for two players on our top line with EP right now. Miller is having the best year of his career and Toffoli has 6 points in 6 games so far. The Markstrom news came after all this, which has hurt, but we will see the resiliency of this team getting through this. We have many players still in our pipeline and there are only so many spots in the roster and for development before it gets watered down. Benning and crew have been doing a fine job finding depth in the latter part of the draft outside the sexy picks. With key roles filling up on the roster, depth is what we will need anyway in the future. It's a tight race right now, but I'd say we are in a better position to make the playoffs with Toffoli than without him at this point. We are not the team that invented "selling assets" for a playoff drive. Whatever criticism is made for doing this could be made towards the rest of the league at some point or another.
-
Rebuild teams suck, go figure. Did you expect us to be at the top of the league while rebuilding? We have made our top 10 picks count which can't be said by all teams. We have made several picks beyond the 1st round count. Again something not all teams can say. We have the deepest prospect pool in ages over the past 3-5 years. The team has been trending up over this time and that we are even in the discussion of playoffs. Just because we have made moves directed for the playoffs does not mean the rebuild is done. Benning himself has said he sees 7 young players cracking the roster of the next couple of years. We are making a playoff push to see who steps up and who steps out to make further assessments. All this in 3-5 years is remarkable. Look at other rebuilds, some that are still going despite starting years prior to when we did.
