  1. All the more reason they should trade from their strength (defense) to bolster their offense. Not sure we have what it takes to get it done, but they need to do something. If Risto is involved in a trade, I can only imagine it'll be an offseason move rather than a TDL move unless some team is willing to go nuts and pay out the wazoo.
  2. They didn't take away his C. Dawes came back from injury. Tryamkin was simply keeping it warm. I believe he is amongst their leadership group and in camp, he was leading warmups. Whatever ice time they cut, they have given back in spades. He actually leads the defense for TOI per game (albeit by about 3 seconds), but earlier in the year when I had checked he was 2nd, so they must've been giving him some top minutes of late to bump him up. He's been too good for them lately to play games with him, they need to play him. They may have put pressure on him earlier on, so the fact that he still hasn't signed is promising for us. If they chose to hold him back, then that's only more incentive to stay here rather than have a fall back faithful team. It's best for Atvo to keep on his good side. This would bode well for him to sign back with them even if he is a "UFA" if they show respect for his wishes.
  3. Toronto had Reilly and Barrie as two offensive minded guys. Didn't seem to fare well. Shattenkirk has 6 PP points this year. Edler hasn't been on PP1 in quite some time and isn't even a regular on PP2. So not sure why you're concerned about bumping him down. I'm not sure if having two PP QBs would make a difference. We don't see a lot, if any, teams that do this. Considering how poor Barrie has looked, there is no way I'm giving him a NMC. He hasn't earned this right. I would sign Barrie on a cheap deal for one year, so he can prove himself again for his big contract, otherwise I'll pass. As a rental, unless he is sold for cheap, I'm not all that interested either. We keep hearing how we need big bodies for the playoffs. Barrie doesn't provide this.
  4. We hear this time and time again (eg Raymond, etc), seems rare the hands can ever really suddenly match the speed.
  5. I bet we were in on Simmonds as a backup plan until the Toffoli trade and now it's just a continued rumour from that. Only way I see us adding Simmonds at this point especially for the suggested return is that we are dumping Eriksson or something as well. It just doesn't make sense otherwise.
  6. Have to think that if Juolevi is being dangled, then Rathbone is signing at the end of this year and has a legitimate shot at making the team within the next couple of years. With Edler and Hughes in front on LD, there really is only one spot left for the two (Brisebois could be a stop gap bottom pairing guy until Edler retires). So I could see Juolevi being shopped, but I would expect a better return than just Simmonds or Wood. I imagine if this were in the talks that we must have a serious cap dump going back the other way involved. Which would make sense if we are shipping out a bottom 6 cap dump and replacing with a short term bottom 6 player. Woo in the rumours kinda surprises me. RD isn't a strong area for us.
  7. Changing the way he plays doesn't have to be a negative connotation. He's always seemed like a hard working driven player, so he will find a new way to be effective while playing less recklessly and avoid injuries. He's doing alright health wise lately (knock on wood) and he's continuing to contribute towards his team's success of late as a leader. His speed and tenacity doesn't go away, he just needs to learn to control it near the boards. It's not an overhaul to his game.
  8. Tryamkin. I find it hard to believe that Benning doesn't already know if he's coming back or not. I think he's just keeping things quiet. He learned early in his GM career when he got fined for tampering and a recent example is how he kept quiet about the extent of Boeser's injury until after the Toffoli trade. Considering that Tryamkin's agent has previously said that it won't take long to get a deal done and the fact that he hasn't extending in the KHL already are pretty telling to me. In the meantime before he arrives, give some depth a look. If Tryamkin does return, Stecher might be the odd man out anyway.
  9. Initially yes. See what we've got in him. Not ready? Give Chatfield a look. Not ready? Benn and/or Fantenberg hold the fort until Tryamkin hopefully returns. Worst case scenario is Tryamkin doesn't return this season (or at all), Rafferty/Chatfield are duds, and Benn/Fantenberg look out of place on the right side (despite hearing all summer that they can play the right side). Lots would have to go wrong to make us wish we still had Stecher's 15 mins of ice time back. With all this said, I'm perfectly fine with keeping Stecher for this playoff drive as well. But he's as good as gone next season unless he takes a pay-cut to stay.
  10. He's averaged 15 mins a night this season (some games in top 4 min territory, but balanced with some 12 min or less nights this year) slightly below Benn and Fantenberg. On a cap crunched team, Stecher is too expensive for his role.
  11. You're not getting anyone better (or even close) if Stecher is the principal trade piece.
  12. Haven't you heard? The players are putting up the points in spite of Green. They are going against Green's coaching and doing the opposite.
  13. I believe the dogs of the Canuck players are racing. Weiner dog races happen in Arizona to get Kessel hungry for the game.
  14. He said he expects him to be an everyday NHLer next season I believe.
  15. Hard to say if it's a drop off as we need to see them play first. Stecher is basically playing the #6 role right now and if someone can't step into that role coming from the AHL, then we need to consider their future with our team as well. With that said, we have insurance in that Benn and Fantenberg are capable of playing the right (Hughes can as well if needed). This could all be temporary for if/when Tryamkin returns and suddenly IMO we will have an upgrade in that position. The reason I'm less concern is consider guys like Fabbro and Makar who joined their teams straight from college and jumping into a playoff run. Now of course Rafferty/Chatfield/Tryamkin are not that level of potential, they are also stepping into a lesser role than those guys did. Stecher's minutes are very manageable to shelter someone if needed. If we can get a 2nd for Stecher, then go bananas, but I doubt it. DeMelo was playing nearly 19 minutes a night and was a main PKer, albeit on a weaker team, but Stecher is not getting a ton of minutes with us. DeMelo is a good bottom pairing guy on a good team much like what I think Stecher is and Troy may even be a smidge below.
  16. More reason to test out Rafferty and/or Chatfield. The insurance is to have Benn and/or Fantenberg play if they can fill in the 15 min average a night with no special teams that Stecher provides. Those guy have been talked about all summer as being capable of playing the right side if need be. If/when Tryamkin returns, he's a leftie that has almost exclusively played on the right side. I imagine that won't change if/when he returns and thus fills back the compliment of "RD" for depth while upgrading in size for the playoffs and for "free". We traded a 3rd round pick last draft as part of a trade that helped us add a top 6 player. Tryamkin was drafted with a 3rd round pick. Madden was a 3rd round pick that was utilized in acquiring Toffoli. The 3rd round pick might not help us in the playoffs this year, but has potential to help us in the future. And I think Stecher's 15 mins will be replaceable. This is coming from someone that has been completely against trading Tanev this year for picks because Tanev is not easily replaceable and will be more key for any playoff success. A 3rd for Stecher is very good value especially since we signed him for free and he's an undersized guy in the role that he plays. If it's available I'll take it. Of course I'd explore other options as well, but I'm comfortable with a 3rd.
  17. I wouldn't say rag dolled. Charged at Myers and got him off balance early. If they squared off properly, I doubt Manson rag dolls Myers. However, yes he was the one that took on Myers.
  18. As much as I love Stecher, he plays a replaceable role on the team. The only thing we lose is depth, but even then, we can give Rafferty a look, maybe even Chatfield and worst case is Benn and Fantenberg could fill his spot for the time being and we can still have Sautner and Brisebois up in the pressbox as well. Bide some time until hopefully Tryamkin returns and we have a full compliment of depth back while giving some of the guys a look and give them some experience should we need to call upon them in the playoffs. We may even see Rathbone sign with us. If we are down so many dmen that our depth is that tested, most teams aren't going to able to manage that. I'm fine with getting some value back for Stecher. The difference between him and Tanev is that Tanev plays a much bigger role that is harder to replace in such a short time. Stecher is averaging the least amount of TOI per game even less than Benn and Fantenberg (mostly because Stecher isn't used much on any special teams). He's dependable and a good guy, but from a playing standpoint, he's replaceable.
  19. Ristolainen is an even this year after managing his minutes better instead of throwing him out every 2nd shift. Yet still leads his team for ice time per game by over 3 minutes a night still likely facing the tough competition. If Stecher is holding you back from wanting Ristolainen, then you're never going to be building a winning squad.
  20. Probably just some of the guys quietly praying to the hockey Gaud for a Cup this year.
