[Proposal] Gaudette for Ristolainen
theo5789 replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
No brainer for me. Love Gaudette, but keeping in mind that we have Madden and Focht who are looking decent coming up while someone like Jasek could potentially fill a spot, adding a top pair RD is way more important. However there's no way Gaudette and Stecher get the deal done. -
[Proposal] Gaudette for Ristolainen
theo5789 replied to Kanukfanatic's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Cap space unlikely available if we acquire Risto and between him and Myers, the brunt of the minutes will be absorbed. Add Tryamkin as the "bottom pairing" guy for cheaper. I imagine teams will focus their offensive entries mostly against our left side D if this is the case. -
Jay Bouwmeester collapses on bench

If it is indeed the end, it would be nice to see him dressed for the last home game for them and not necessarily play except maybe the final shift of the evening so he could get a proper send off rather than ending it the way it would end now. Great hockey career that should be celebrated and not remembered for this incident. I think it would be good for Jay mentality and allow him to accept the retirement a bit easier. -

Don't drag me back into this. -
They can have Palmu or a 6th/7th rounder. Cap space isn't a concern for them. Baertschi could get back into the NHL for them as soon as he's traded. The retention (probably only 1.5 million or so) is only so that we can fit him in and once again isn't a concern for them. They're not getting much back for Bogosian, but they get a slight gamble towards a potential middle 6 guy that basically replaces Sheary (in whom they could try to sell for picks/prospects). If this were to happen, then I'd be looking to trade Stecher for a pick which gives us more insurance at RD while we hopefully wait for Tryamkin and if he doesn't return this season, then we have some size that we could bring up for the playoffs.

[PGT] Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 12, 2020

That's interesting because I remember Benning seemingly over-excited about drafting Petey that he pointed him out in the crowd and blew our cover to not be able to trade down a spot and gain an asset while passing up on Glass in which they were seemingly trying to bluff Vegas into thinking we would pick. -
Baertschi for Bogosian (retained to balance out the cap and after he has cleared waivers). They might be hard pressed to add players next year given their play, so having Baertschi signed for next year might be beneficial and could replace Sheary who has been underwhelming for them.

I think there will be moves, but like I said, it'll be more peripheral players like Schaller and Leivo. Roussel is about the highest that we "sell" and maybe Stecher as well (with the assumption that Tryamkin is returning and Rafferty could get a look for the time being between TDL and if Tryamkin comes over). These moves will have coverage in depth already and hopefully doesn't have too much effect on team chemistry. I'm confident that Benning has a plan in place for different scenarios and what strings to pull leading up to the TDL. -

The broken record comment is in regards to whether a player is valuable because they aren't "make or break" players. I've heard this several times especially with the Tanev trade talks as well. I can only speak for myself, but I get that we can dump cap by moving Sutter, however it hurts our playoffs aspirations. He alone may not be "make or break", but losing him currently would create a ripple effect on the minutes of the team. We may have had some success without him, but over a longer duration, we start to see the effects. We start to see Miller/Horvat taking on PK minutes which take away from their offensive energy. Horvat gets more faceoff shifts again adding more minutes to himself. It wears down the centers. God forbid we go down another center after we have supposedly dealt Sutter. The value of Sutter is underrated and underappreciated. So while we could use the cap space, we also need his depth for any playoff aspirations. Now just like the "make or break" record, generally the next record we hear is how we won't be winning this year anyway. The goal this year is to give our young roster a positive playoff experience and no matter how far we get, it's best to put the best team going forward and not downgrade to allow them to develop and to assess the team to determine what missing pieces are needed. Roussel is a defensive forward (amongst other things) and would also help us with cap relief and would be less detrimental to our team moving forward with our abundance of depth at wing. He has enough value that we most likely do not need to add to move him and could potentially unload his entire cap hit. It's arguable that Roussel has a reputation that isn't favourable to allow him to play the game he wants and especially so for those that believe the league already has it in against us. There's other options though like maybe trading Schaller (another defensive forward) who could be acquired for cheaper if NYI doesn't want to splurge. Whatever the case, I can't see us moving Sutter at the TDL unless some team really wants to buy him from us. I could see us exploring moving him in the offseason after hopefully he finishes out the year and has a decent playoff showing which only ups his value. -
You must've missed their chirps at Bieksa and Hansen last night.

I feel like Ohlund could be a hitman these days.

This is starting to sound like a broken record. Is our team better with Sutter in the lineup? Is he currently in our lineup? Are we winning with him in the lineup? He contributes to the team as a center, PKer and lately being put into offensive roles. He's an assistant captain of the team, so he is amongst the leadership group. With this said, look at what you're saying and look from the perspective of the other team. If Sutter isn't a "make or break" player, why would a team want him this year and next? They are well aware of the injuries as well. Now look at Roussel, clearly you see value there. Look at the players you have projected to return and they are both wingers. Something that Roussel is as well, so he has replacements in place. Schaller could be traded or could be waived to save some cap space as well, but again another winger. I could also see us waiving Leivo or extending his conditioning time as long as possible. We have an abundance of wingers, but center depth (that can take faceoffs) is thin. Sutter has more value to us heading into a playoff position compared to Roussel. Especially when considering that our main call up has also been a winger in MacEwen and now Bailey is getting a look. Who are we calling up should a center go down with an injury (Graovac has been out since near the beginning of the year and was our best center call-up option)? Sutter may not be a bonafide top player for our team, but the ripple effect of "dumping" him is much greater. Now with that said, I'm not wanting to move Roussel either. But as you're eluding to, we are looking at who is most likely to be moved if we indeed need to move a contract. I think in terms of team balance/chemistry that we could part with, it makes Roussel expendable if need be. I have no doubt that Benning has something up his sleeve to make this all work out. I'm not all that concerned, so long as the team isn't downgrading heading into the playoffs. -

If we were out of playoff contention, then I understand that mentality. When the playoffs are on the horizon and with a young team and wanting to see what this team can do, we don't sell a center that takes on the hard minutes and is an assistant captain on our team. We may move a contract, but it'll be more of a peripheral player. Potentially someone like Schaller. Although if we keep having this carousel of a player getting hurt just as one is returning, then we may not have to worry about that. It almost seems unlikely that we will see everyone healthy all at one shot. Roster limits go out the window after the trade deadline, and I'm sure Benning has a plan for the cap that doesn't involve moving a player that is currently important to us. -

Well that's why I would consider the offer, depending on what it is, but we aren't selling Sutter is the point. Someone has to buy him. -

We aren't cap dumping Sutter at this point. We are playing for the playoffs, so we don't downgrade (and to boot give up assets). If Sutter stays healthy and has a decent showing in the playoffs, his value would be even greater in the offseason when I think we would consider moving him. This trade deadline we would be moving peripheral players if anyone at all. I think it's unlikely that we add either and just go with this team and see what happens. If someone wants Sutter though, then they have to pay for him and depending on the offer, I may consider it. -

Well if he's content toiling in the minors and hates Vancouver that much to not care for a fresh start, then good luck to him. -

Not that I want Ladd, but to answer this question. Perhaps it's more of an opportunity to see if he can get back to the NHL. We brought Schenn back from the minors for a spell and earned him another contract. We have actually utilized LE. If Ladd can put in the work, maybe he can try to win a 4th line/extra forward spot. Maple Ridge guy, so he might put in the extra effort to stay in Vancouver or at least be a call up option. Utica is in New York, so not that shabby either and as Shorty said, he's heard Utica is nice this time of the year! -

Perhaps some hostility from Gillis and maybe Nonis as well, but they were willing to put their differences aside for the Sedins.

Remember all those people that wanted Edler gone? Or at least willing to risk/question the relationship between him and the team to hope for a trade and re-sign? Asset management includes taking care of your own. -

Cap dump him like JT Miller. -
What a great ceremony. It was so thoroughly enjoyable that an hour went by and it felt so short. Well done by the Canucks organization organizing this and well done on the speeches by everyone. A great night for a pair of the greatest Canucks of all time. I suppose if I could've changed something, it's that I wished the people on stage could hear the speeches. Would've been nice to see the reactions from the players getting acknowledged and ribbed. I'm sure the players would've just laughed at the jokes, but unfortunate to see them sitting there a bit dumbfounded not knowing what's going on. But man, you could tell it was a close group when they could dish it out on each other like that and I'm sure this was just the jokes for the public to hear.
