I think they have some promise but something isn't working there. Not sure what direction they will head in and what they would be looking for. Not sold on Ullmark. Luukkonen has been in the ECHL mostly this year, but as a 20 year old. I didn't know about Johanson until just looking up now, so maybe he changes things for their goaltending outlook. I would love to keep Demko as the succession plan, but the expansion might make that unlikely.

Certainly an option. Whatever the case, I don't think he's untouchable. Not sure what the market is for him though around the league.

Yes and if Green says something about it, it's blasted. If he says nothing, he's blasted. There have been a select few games where we have been pushed around. A response is good and all, but sometimes a response is what the opposition is trying to get from you especially if they're more built to play that way. Some nights, staying focused works, some nights it doesn't. I believe we have drawn one of the most, if not the most, penalties in the league. Bo is likely being vocal but probably trying to show respect for the refs (even if they don't deserve it). We simply don't see/hear everything that is going on on the ice. -
I'm open to moving Gaudette for the right deal. Madden is playing well, but we also have Focht who has size and is looking good. Karlsson and Costmar are having decent years for the prospect pipeline. Of course all these players need development time to mature physically and mentally, but they make me feel comfortable with moving Gaudette if he is the piece a team wants that bolsters a weakness for us. Bo and EP are pretty much locks for the top 2 center spots. So if we need to find a stop gap 3C (currently playing in a sheltered role now anyway) until those other prospects (and potentially any other future draftees), I'm comfortable with that.

I think Kapanen is a good player, but I wouldn't trade them Demko for him. Last thing we need is more wingers. If I'm trading Demko, I'd be targetting Ristolainen. Buffalo is putting faith in Lukkonen but that's a lot of eggs in that basket IMO for them.

I'd like to see Tanev do what he has done for Hughes with OJ. I'd probably switch up Tryamkin and Tanev and balance out the minutes more. 21-20-19. I think Tryamkin eats up some of the PK time which lowers the minutes of Myers while I'd like to see OJ take some 2nd unit PP time and likely some PK time (as he's being groomed to do now) to lower Edler and even Myers' minutes also. If that happens, it could even get to more of 20-20-20 split with Edler and Myers focusing mostly on even strength time. Don't sleep on Rathbone too. I could see Brisebois being the 7th dman when it gets to this point.

Haven't really followed the conversations here, but the take I get is that if Green says something, he's doing something wrong. If he doesn't say something, then he's a lame duck coach that shows no care for his team. Oh and Bo Horvat is now not a good enough captain apparently (despite having one of his best seasons to date). Why do these conversations always appear after every loss (even in the midst of quite an incredible run)? Hmm. -
Maybe we work on that with him rather than unloading him. He turns 23 soon and is arguable if he's even in his prime yet and still is producing points despite "struggling". What happens when he works on his game further, develops and gets out of this funk? We likely would've sold him "low" at this point. Of course if there is an amazing deal on the table, I'd consider it, but he's also a very good friend of Petey and team chemistry is a big factor. Also no thanks to Byfuglien. He's nearly at the 35+ contract region, hasn't skated all year due to recovering whatever ailment he has (and his last playing season was only 42 games), known to come to camp out of shape, and just doesn't strike me as to having the character that our team has been looking for.
-
I'm yes and no on this. As above, once we have secured a spot I think we can focus in on managing minutes. Rather than sit out players (although maintenance days aren't out of the question), I think we could lower/balance some minutes out throughout the lineup. Where I'm opposed to this is being concerned about last night's game as it seems to be where this is being triggered from. We aren't going to win out the games for the rest of the season. We will have some dud games as even the best teams do. When a team is hot, it's unlikely there will be roster changes no matter how tired the players may be because it's not going to be easy to single out which player to pull out. We will see if there are any against Minnesota. Fantenberg got the fewest minutes last night, so it wouldn't surprise me if Benn draws back in for him. I could see Bailey drawing in, but for who, I'm not certain yet.
-
Not right handed, but Tryamkin plays almost exclusively on the right side and Hughes can play on the right side as well. Options in case we have too many promising LD.

I disagree that it's parking the rebuild and especially development. Our prospect pool is deep and there's only so many developmental spots. We don't want to water it down. At some point we won't be replacing players with young players as rapidly as spots get taken. Tanev is not holding anyone back, he is contributing towards our success. LE is a different scenario, he is currently contributing now. Those young players had the opportunity in camp to knock him out. Baertschi was knocked out by Gaudette (and yet people were upset about this as well), so it's not like it wasn't possible. OJ has just returned this year from a major injury. It bodes well for him to be getting the ice time in the AHL. Brisebois is being held back by Fantenberg and Benn, not Tanev. Same with Rathbone and he's still a ways away from being able to sign with us anyway. The difference is I think having Tanev actually does contribute to next season even if he isn't here after season's end. I find that to be value as much as a lottery ticket that may or may not work and could be years away anyway. Some GMs need to draft by volume, but Benning seems to target his players and has a plan to develop them (drafting for character because he knows those players are likely to put in the work). The team has been on a nice run of late and once again has improved year after year. I find it hard to argue against our overall direction right now (as opposed to microscoping every negative detail that can exist with any team if looked at closely enough).
-
And that's simply a difference in opinion on the value of Tanev heading into the playoffs. I feel he will help our group development no matter how we finish. Adding Tryamkin while still having Tanev only improves our team/chances. Tanev is currently a top 4 dman, something that we made an effort to add to when we added Myers because we knew it was a weakness. I have mentioned I am comfortable letting him walk and have the mentality that if he does that I will see him as a rental (that most teams make going into the playoffs) but instead he doesn't cost us assets to acquire. I haven't decided yet or made an opinion on how I feel towards re-signing him. I have a feeling we won't be able to afford to keep him and I am hoping Tryamkin could take over Tanev's duties, but I also don't expect him to walk late into a season/playoff drive and have him take over immediately. I want us to have the best playoff experience as possible regardless of where we finish and Tanev contributes towards that. I agree with your sentiment in giving some players some opportunities, but I'd move Stecher in this case. But Stecher has also been a fine contributor this year, I think he deserves a chance to showcase himself in a playoff setting.
-
Which is odd, because he seems to be on the same boat of adding Tryamkin and he's seems as excited as I am for his potential return, but because I differ in opinion about whether I feel Tanev should be moved or not and suddenly it's become personal. All of a sudden I'm some "rose coloured" fan because I don't share the same opinion. I think adding Tryamkin to this present group would be an improvement to a team already rolling and would help our chances down the road, but he has written this team off and thinks we might as well not even try. Everyone thought Tampa would walk their way to a Cup last year and were swept. There's a reason why we play the games.
-
4-2-3 record against those teams this season. If the argument is those teams haven't been playing playoff style hockey, well perhaps we haven't been either. We won't know until we get there. I'm not sure what's so rose coloured about what I'm saying. I never said we will win the Cup. I've been saying that I want to give ourselves the best team moving forward for development of our young players no matter where we finish. I didn't expect to be where we are right now at the start of the season, they are ahead of my projection. It's reason for optimism. You want to suggest we have no chance and that's your opinion, but I guarantee that the players and management aren't going in with that mentality. Especially if they roll into the playoffs with confidence and not back in by downgrading the team. We could sit players out and rest them, that isn't going to stop the opposition from trying to play physical against us. The playoffs will be a learning experience and to see where our team stands. If we don't win, then we adjust accordingly.

He's representing the Canucks in a public manner. It makes sense that he would need permission from the club. He's not just going to have dinner with some friends or perhaps if he was just attending the game without the public part of it, then it would be a different story. Whatever the case, why does it matter if he requires permission or not? At the end of the day, he got to go and the schedule worked out well for him to do so.

Players have off nights and make mistakes. He may be tired, but as others have mentioned, it was 3 games in 4 nights and the entire team didn't look sharp. Hughes will be fine. I did say that we could manage his minutes in game, but we have to make games out of reach to do so.
-
All the more reason to have as much depth heading into the playoffs. Adding Tryamkin to this group is additional depth to support any potential injuries. I sure hope the Canucks aren't going in with the mentality that they don't have a chance. They don't seem satisfied even after wins because they know they are more capable and have higher expectations for themselves and the team. It's funny because we are nowhere near the Edmonton mentality. Benning has brought in veterans despite many complaining about how we overpaid for them (Beagle, Roussel, etc). These players have been taking the hard minutes and insulating our young players. They are giving them the freedom to take the spotlight on offense, but have supported them rather than expecting them to do it all unlike the expectations in Edmonton relying on the young players to simply carry them and surrounded them with cheaper and lower quality depth. This right here is why keeping Tanev is more valuable than selling him off because Tanev is who takes on the toughest defensive assignments is going to support our young group. You take away a top 4 RD (something that we had been lacking over the last couple of years and finally have a decent compliment) and suddenly that is even more pressure on Hughes without his regular partner than compliments his game.
-
Not sure how much is attributed to being overtired or just faced a strong team. Hughes didn't look "tired" to me, but did make some mistakes, which he has done even when he wasn't "tired". The entire team didn't look sharp.

Nothing is certain until we see him back officially here. However, there are many signs that points that he will return. Tryamkin hasn't changed his Instagram profile of him being in a Canuck uni and checks in on practices and even gives a wave in the comments. He has admitted he wasn't quite mature enough in his first stint here which sounds like he's mentally more prepared for another go. His agent has said he would like to return and there are articles wondering if we actually are interested in bringing him back. His agent also said it shouldn't take long to get a deal done. He could likely make more money playing here, so the only doubt IMO is whether he's using the NHL lure to try and squeeze out more from a new KHL deal. So all in all, it's seems more of a matter of when rather than if. His contract officially ends before he could join us this year, so his team would have to release him from his contract if we are hoping to see him this year at all. I'm fine either way, just hope he does return. As for him being a "better" player depends on how you view it. He has seemingly changed the focus on his game to be more of a defensive dman. He is currently playing top pairing minutes and getting top PK time. How well that translates here will only be determined when we do see him here, but I'd have to think he's improved in not only his gameplay, but maturity and likely his work ethic. Can't speak of his English though.

While I understand the idea of sitting and resting the players, we don't want to cool off heading into the playoffs. The teams that are fighting right to the end seem to get into the playoffs on a roll and take advantage of teams that take the foot off the pedal (see Columbus vs Tampa last year). I don't know if players need to sit, but minutes need to be managed. It'll be a fine balancing act. I can't really see Rafferty or Juolevi getting any game time unless we have a string of injuries. Tryamkin is likely joining us very late and is also unlikely to slot in barring injuries or if we want to shake things up if things aren't going well. Although I do see Tryamkin more likely getting time over Rafferty or Juolevi (hopefully they go on a nice run in Utica).

Read the rest of the post past the Byfuglien part for your analysis. What was the point of bring up Byfuglien in this discussion if not to consider acquiring him? There's a Byfuglien thread if you're more curious about his situation. If you want some relevance if you're not suggesting that we should get him, it's that if a team takes him on for their playoff hopes, then that's one less team looking to add and thus watering down the market for Tanev and therefore and even lesser return which increases his value for us to keep him for at least this playoff drive.
