  1. How is that a homer line? You think the players and management are thinking they don't have a chance this year? That's a piss poor mentality. Everyone in the hockey world knows that if you make the playoffs, anything can happen (eg 8th place finishers winning the Cup or going for Cinderella runs, or runaway season leaders Tampa getting swept in the first round). Teams that get knocked out early are the ones that back into the playoffs and a move like trading Tanev with no tangible upgrade is a back in move. It's funny because we have made our picks counts, we have the deepest prospect pool this team has seen in decades, we have players (Tanev is one, but we want to dump him) and we have a fanbase army for those that support the team. We can't be stuck in the rebuild mentality forever.
  2. I'm glad it's a foregone conclusion for you that the Cup is out of reach. I guarantee that the players and management do not feel this way. I agree with putting together the best team, but as they are playing some pretty damn good hockey now, we shouldn't squander our opportunities. Petey and Quinn are on cheap ELCs and are key contributors, you take advantage of this time as well. 15 or so more games plus playoffs potentially. We want to add Tryamkin to this group. Downgrading and going through a month losing a top 4 defender when trying to establish ourselves heading into the playoffs is the wrong mentality to the team and for development. Juolevi is not coming up for Tanev (LD-RD situation), and Rafferty is far step below (taking away our top defensive dman to add a untested player who's biggest deficiency right now is defending). Tryamkin may not even join us this season or join us late and he isn't walking straight into a top 4 role. Having Tanev allows us to see what we have in Tryamkin first and gives us more depth to try and get as far in the playoffs as possible even if we don't win. More games = more experience for the team. I'm not complaining about the idea of acquiring a pick. It's about downgrading a team when Benning himself has stated he wants to see how this group (which likely includes Tanev) does in the playoffs to make further assessments. Picks are lottery tickets and not all pan out. I could care less how many picks we have as long as the team continues to progress forward and that includes development, which IMO is just as important as the picks themselves.
  3. Who knows, they may have had a practice or a team event, but allowed Gaudette to attend. Perhaps there were other players there too, but just not shown as Gaudette was a former star at the Beanpot so they showcased him specifically.
  4. Because he is employed by the Canucks and need to run things through management. Perhaps the team had a practice, but they allowed him to go. Who knows, but the broadcast suggested that Gaudette was granted permission.
  5. So the solution is to bring in a 34 year old that played 42 games last season and zero games this season and hasn't skated this year according to reports rather than have a guy who's been healthy this year (knock on wood) has chemistry with the team, has good character and wants to win for this city.... You plan for the best team for the playoffs, you don't concern yourself with potential injuries. Should Pittsburgh be concerned with Crosby's concussion history, or Malkin being injured every year? Now I know you're going to say that Tanev is not at their level and I agree, but the point is Tanev makes our team better when he's in the lineup and that's all that is important especially with us heading potentially into the playoffs, no team downgrades in this situation. If the opposition wants to focus in on him, then that opens up someone else on the team, let them chase. If Tanev gets hurt, then we have the said depth to cover for him. If it's not Tanev they target, it'll be someone else, like Stecher, should we move him too? Then they'll target Edler, then Hughes, etc.
  6. Jim Benning gave permission for Gaudette to attend yesterday's game. There's no doubt some Canucks brass would be there.
  7. What am I overanalyzing? The best team moving forward includes Tanev simple as that if anything in terms of depth. You said yourself that Hughes is the reason why Tanev has been healthier this year. Why wouldn't that carry over into the playoffs? They can target Tanev all they want, that just opens up more room for Hughes to do his thing. Who would've thought a top 4 dman is unnecessary for a playoff run?
  8. I assume you mean Jordie. Jamie I'm sure hasn't forgotten about BFG though.
  9. I'd still like to see us acquire Ristolainen (not at the trade deadline). Have a right side of Ristolainen, Myers and Tryamkin (still on topic). With Hughes, Juolevi, Rathbone on the left (Edler, and Benn/Fantenberg/Brisebois in the meantime). Would cost us to acquire Ristolainen though. Not sure what they would want.
  10. We have been down that road...during the years that our team had been bottom feeders, so hard to say we fared well. Healthy this year (knock on wood) and look where we are now? Not saying it's a direct correlation, but it certainly helps to have Tanev than to not have him. I'm not the one suggesting that we aren't winning the Cup with Tanev. I think he gives us the best team moving forward. Tanev isn't some insignificant piece to our team, so if we aren't winning with him, we certainly downgrade our chances to win without him. At the start of the season, I expected us to either just sneak into the playoffs or possibly just miss it. They are further ahead than I thought. I'd like to see where this team can go and sounds like Benning agrees. Tanev is one player, but he's also a top 4 dman that takes a lot of the actual defensive responsibilities and has helped contribute towards getting Hughes to where he is today (Hughes gave him high praise at the start of the season about how smart of a player he is). He may or may not get hurt, but we are a better team with him in the lineup. Hughes' arrival has been greatly contributed by Tanev. Hughes may have found his own legs already, but they have good chemistry together. Hughes is the young kid, usually they are insulated by the veteran. They have both benefitted from each other. Tanev is very much part of the team. It's naive to think that Tanev does not have a significant impact to this current team. I never said we would get a lottery pick. Not sure where you got that from. Who would be trading for him? Certainly not non playoff teams. Tanev might fetch something like a 3rd that climbs based on team performance and if he re-signs with them. The playoff experience with him in the lineup for the young core (to give us the best team heading into the playoffs) is going to outweigh whatever pick where the odds aren't even high that they will pan out.
  11. I think it's very different than the Hamhuis situation. Our team at that time was declining, it made sense to move him at that point. We let him walk for nothing because the team that originally made an offer balked and we chose to not let them have him for cheap so we don't look like a team that will give in. In Tanev's situation, we are on the cusp of making the playoffs with a new core. A young core that hasn't seen NHL playoff hockey for the most part. This is the time to see what they've got and they need the support just like through all the years that we have surrounded them with veteran presence to take the hard minutes and insulate them. Look at the team and their progression, the playoffs are a different beast and it's best to have the best team going in. If Tanev walks, at least he gave us the best chance a winning (not singlehandedly, but contributing in what he does). I've been saying all along that we can view it as a playoff rental in which many teams trade picks and such to acquire, but instead we have one for free and has chemistry with our team and our best up and coming young defender. OJ and Brisebois are both LD, so have no bearing on the RD situation. If Rafferty doesn't pan out and since we would be losing out on our top PK defender, we could very well back into the playoffs which is no good for the confidence. There's a chance we get through it anyway, but it's certainly a downgrade on the team which no team entering the playoffs does.
  12. I'd take Tryamkin for my playoff team as well. But I'd also keep Tanev for the playoff run because that combination is depth and gives us the best team moving forward. If Tryamkin proves his worth, letting Tanev walk is an easier pill to swallow. I've been one those suggesting that Tryamkin could replace Tanev next year because of his role in the KHL and how it could translate here. I just don't think someone coming potentially just before the playoffs starts and moving someone out at the trade deadline is a good way to roll into the playoffs. I think we want the best team possible because we don't know how it'll all play out in the end despite projections.
  13. Just replying the topics in the thread. The connection I see is that Tryamkin is the expectation to fill Tanev's role, so I guess the discussion to the importance of Tanev has some relevance.
  14. So who do we replace Tanev with? If we don't have a chance with Tanev, then what are our chances without Tanev? We might as well tank now because what's the point? To answer my own question, the point is to allow the young group to develop further in the next stage. You insulate them with the best team around them and let them gain experience without destroying their confidence. I've asked this several times, who replaces Tanev's top PK duties and do as fine of a job as him? If no one, then why downgrade the team heading into the playoffs (I doubt any team in the league does this)? You never know in any given year. Columbus didn't sell any of their UFAs that could've garnered much more than what Tanev would've fetched and they all walked and yet they are still in playoff contention today. Did anyone predict Tampa would get swept? Everyone thought they were sure thing finalists. Projections mean nothing and that's why they still have to play the games. You've made a lot of predictions and state them as truth. Tanev will get hurt? Knock on wood, he's been so far so good. We won't be signing him next year? That's not the talk between the two sides. Tanev won't make a difference in the playoffs? How do you know? He's our best defensive dman (who rarely gets any credit) that has helped with Quinn's growth now and hopefully in the playoffs as well. Remember Tanev's OT goal earlier in the year? Perhaps he has a clutch goal in him yet. There is no doubt our team is better with Tanev than without, until we have someone that can replace him. He, alone, isn't going to win us the playoffs, but he sure is going to contribute towards that success. If he walks for nothing, then the playoff experience that we gather for the young players by having the best team moving forward is going to outweigh the lottery ticket that we pick up (which likely is a set of conditions before we even net a 1st round pick). We will be fine whether we add whatever pick or not.
  15. Support players are just as important as the "drivers". With that said, Tanev is one of the "drivers" of the defense. Who takes over the top PK duties? My hopes is that Tryamkin would, but we will need to see if he is a feasible option before unloading Tanev and Tryamkin may not even be here until late March or April at the earliest if at all this season.
  16. We will see. No one has suggested that he would walk right into a top 4 role (assuming he's here before this season ends). I personally have been suggesting that we keep Tanev to see what we have in Tryamkin before putting all the eggs in that basket. With that said, based on the role he plays in the KHL and give him an offseason to prepare and a camp to fight for a spot and I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing 18-20 minutes a night here (considering he was already averaging 17 minutes a night when he left here anyway). He has grown his defensive game and now is using it on a NHL sized rink. I think it's going to translate well once he adjusts to the systems and settles down here (which will be easier this time around with said maturity and familiarity from his last go around).
  17. He's back to being a stud game changing hero again after that bust game. I don't know if I can handle this roller coaster of emotions that some seem to go through.
  18. Isn't Byfuglien notorious for coming into camp out of shape and working it off in season? All this time not skating, he might be giving new definition to Big Buff. I'd be surprised if he was keeping himself in shape all this time (and not skating supposedly) only for the hope that he could play elsewhere instead, plus give up millions in the process.
  19. The problem is some here think that he's simply going to be picking up from where he last left off here. As if there is no growth in the 3 years he's been away (assuming the same crowd that think development is poor in the KHL eg Podkolzin). I think the biggest improvement is his maturity. I think he has figured out what he needs to do to be effective and successful. If he brings that mindset here, then we certainly have a player.
  20. https://www.flashscore.ca/hockey/russia/khl/standings/ Looks like a much better record at home. Can't simply be attributed to Tryamkin though. Although Tryamkin's team overall seemed to have taken a dip while Tryamkin seemed to improve his game this year fwiw.
  21. Who said Tanev was a make or break player? I've personally only said that he gives us the best chance moving forward. Teams don't downgrade going into the playoffs. The team and players are not thinking this isn't their year. Every year counts, that's why they play the games. Did anyone predict Tampa would get swept in the 1st round last year? See Edmonton, Toronto, Buffalo, etc for long-ass rebuilds. We have actually turned it around in remarkably short order that the pro-tank crew hasn't been able to process it fast enough.
  22. Well Tryamkin's home ice is NHL sized, so he gets practices and plenty of game time on an NHL surface.
  23. We had potentially a 2nd lined up with one of the few teams he was willing to waive his NTC for. They balked and offered less. We told them to pound sand. They got eliminated early in the playoffs. We had a much better TDL the following year. Karma.
  24. Good thing Tryamkin is already playing on NHL ice and had often looked like one of the better players on his team.
